Video game banning and censorship

So how far do you think this will go? What with the media milking the “Gaems ‘r’ bad” cash cow, and the power being held by people who don’t play games.

Recently https://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2009/12/04/Brazil-Bill-Outlaws-Offensive-Games.aspx Brazil may outlaw some video-games and making import of it a crime.

How far do you think they’ll go to attempt to ruin one of our favorite pass-times? Personally I think that at one point someone is going to cross the line and the games industry will grow a spine.

It’s aggravating, but I don’t really care. I live in America, where the only limit is your age.

And hopefully that’ll never change.

If they can’t ban a video game then the US’ll just invent another rating where you can’t buy the game until you’re like 80 or 90.

I can’t believe all this recent stuff about video games being banned. I hadn’t heard about this in Brazil but wasn’t it mentioned that L4D2 was to be banned in Australia?

So you think a single company could stand against a government?

Nope, I’m just being optimistic.

Yep, Australia’s version is censored I believe. It was going to be banned.

Either way this trend is spreading.

we must protect the innocent from those who entertain themselves with simulated violence and profanity

I love how they said that they are doing this “to protect the prinicple equality” What about a gamer’s equality huh? Or does it turn out that some people are more equal than others?

“God Bless America” motherfuckers! Even though some of the biggest anti-video game critics are in the US, they’ve barely managed to dent our First Amendment right to T-Bag newbs and run over pedestrians and watching them fly with the amazing Euphoria engine.

To any American Anti-Video Game Activist (Hillary Clinton, good ol’ Jack Thompson etc.): Censorship of any kind is simply un-American. How would you like it if the 18th Century British censored Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” because “it would start a panic”?
Kids shouldn’t even be playing M-rated games, not that I think letting your kid play M-Rated games makes you a bad parent. If you think you’ve raised your kids well enough, you have nothing to worry about.

As for all the other countries… well, I say you need to fight for your rights. No one is going to just give it to you. You have to fight for what you believe in. And you better do it now, because if they can get away with censoring video games, they can get away with censoring anything.

GAYmers

ITT we epic’ly fail to understand the difference between an “industry” and a “single company.”
Personally I think once the gaming industry grows beyond a certain percentage of GDP, it will start to exert influence on government just like any other industry, and the trend will go the opposite direction towards more permissibility.

HOLY FUCK YEAR. [/THREAD].[/size][/caps]

You say that like the US is the only country with no game censoring.

Fucking hell, not another hyper-patriot thread.

I don’t have any game censorship here either, but they’re still gamers like you and me. If they do end up trying to pull that over here though, I’m going to start punching those middle-aged-balding-douchebags.

Did I ever say that? EVER?

I’m just saying, here in America, I don’t have to worry about getting a shit version of Left 4 Dead 2. I know there are other countries that don’t have to worry about the same, but I also know that there are countries that are seeing flame retardant and disappearing zombies. Why is it that whenever someone say something good about their country, and if that country is the US, people post “oh no, it’s a Patriot fag.”

I’m also suggesting everyone who lives in countries like Germany or Australia to fight against gaming censorship. Because, like I said, if they can get away with this, they can get away with censoring anything (books, movies, comics etc.)

Agreed. I can’t help but laugh a little when ever an anti-video-game person argues “Violent games such as (insert M rated game here) are teaching our kids to be killers” when they seem to forget that, under US law, “kids” aren’t even legally allowed to have bought those games in the first place. Which begs the question… is the problem the video games, or the morons who run our country.

My money is on the second one.

I doubt it. Video game censorship is less than a controversial issue on this forum.

I live in Australia, where every second game is banned by some asshole who plays wii.

Is it really that bad? I used to live there as a kid for about a year, but that was before I got into more mature games. Can’t you do something about it?

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
