Video Card Flicker/Redraw....?

So, I don’t really know what to call this issue I’m having so I’ll just explain it the best I can.

I am using a dual-monitor setup using an ATI Radeon HD 5670 on Windows 7, 64-bit, and, intermittently, the screen would ‘refresh’, and all the windows and such would have to redraw on the screen. Sometimes, this causes graphical glitches. I’ll give an example:

I am currently trying to help subtitle the Freeman’s Mind series using Subtitle Workshop and when this ‘refresh’ happens, the subtitles go ‘behind’ the video…it’s hard to explain but you can see a small piece of the subtitles below the video and I have to move the subtitling program to the other monitor then back in order for the subtitles to appear on top of the video.

Can someone help point me in the right direction to find out what’s going on?

If you need any further information, let me know. THANKS!

Are you using any displayport to vga/dvi adapter? If so… buy a better quality adapter.
Otherwise it might be related to your gpu overheating. Try increasing your graphic cards fan speed with MSI Afterburner.

Does this only happen when doing the subtitle work, is that just one example? Do you have the latest drivers? Have you tried uninstalling (with Driversweeper) and installing a rollback Catalyst driver version? Just a few thoughts

Maybe you don’t have enough power. Tell us your GPU and your PSU.

what catalyst version do you have?

I don’t see how that would affect how the computer/video card draws the windows. But, no. I’m using HDMI for one and DVI/HDMI for the other.

On standard factory settings while just playing a video…?

It’s just an example. It doesn’t seem to happen when I game but when I do 2D work in Windows, such as video editing, or 3D modeling, I get the intermittent flicker/redraw.

Yes.

I’ll wait to see other possible solutions before doing that.

Uhhh…GPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 (as I said). PSU, it appears to be 300W. :fffuuu: That might be part of the problem.

Catalyst Version 11.6…as reported by the AMD VISION Engine Control Center application.

May sound strange but as bat said try downgrading to a previous version of catalyst.

Which version do you suggest I go back to?

300W? You should upgrade that regardless of whether it causes the problem. Depending on how power-hungry the rest of your computer is though.

there is a hotfix for 11.6 or somekind of preview catalyst 11.7 and when I remember correctly it fixes this issue
EDIT:

ok… it fixes flickering, not sure if that’ll fix your issue

I am trying out the hotfix now. I’ll let you know if that solves it. As for the PSU, it might be some time before I am able to upgrade it.

But, thanks!

300W is just… way too low. I have a 6970 and have a corsair 950W That looks like a black octopus with 30 tentacles.

Don’t listen to him, 300 watt is pushing it a little, but his 900watt psu is major overkill for his gfx card and system. Anyway, I doubt the psu is whats causing your issues. It sounds like a driver crash, to be honest. Look in the Windows logs to find out for sure, and a clean reinstall or downgrade of your videocard drivers should fix the problem.

I know that it was a overkill, but I am going to upgrade my system constantly (and overclock whatever I can), so I consider it an investment. I recommend about 400~450. I used a 500W when I had a Nvidia 9800gt.

He has no need for a 500 watt. I have a cheapo dell 500 watt, and I’m using am overcloked i7, overclocked radeon hd 5870, watercooling (not real watercooling, it’s corsair h50-esque, but still), three hard drives, and a bunch of flashy lights (its an alienware that i got for dirt cheap), and I’ve never had any power supply related issues.

Hmm… I want to know what overcooked i7 Tastes like.

you could cook it in boiling water and smell after

oh haha i made a typo haha i should make another one so you can correct it and be funny

I used Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode to completely wipe any ATI video drivers from my system and then installed the latest drivers. So far, so good.

As to the PSU, I’m going to hold off until I see if it becomes a problem.

Congrats!
