Valve: 'It would be fun to remake Half-Life 1'

:stuck_out_tongue:

I love how all it took was one person saying it was canceled and everyone believed it.
I do find it odd though, that Gabe didnā€™t mention anything about BM.

Oh well.
Cool story.

Fucking defaults going around acting like this thing doesnā€™t exist

So there is no form of outsourcing then?

All the hard work and Valve doesnā€™t even acknowledge this. Black Mesa better release soon with a big in your face to Valve.

That was why this Mod was made, Because Valve cheered us up with the idea of it being as detailed as HL2 with all this new stuff and they lied and just put it on source with only slightly better graphics

Hm, interesting but Iā€™m pretty sure Valve acknowledges this mod. Theyā€™re the reason it got the ā€œSourceā€ taken off the end of BM I think. Itā€™s not he said, weā€™re thinking about remaking HL1 or anything just that ā€œit would be fun.ā€ Maybe theyā€™ll hire the BM dev team and sell the mod commercially when itā€™s released?

not gonna happen, quite a few people have worked on the mod over the years that arenā€™t currently involved in the project anymore, anyone of them would be in their right mind to sue if the mod suddenly became a commercial product and they are refused a share of the dosh.

It would also be illegal.

Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead. Black Mesa is not dead.

No, it would only be illegal if somebody besides Valve sold it.

Heā€™s right. The only way a former dev could sue is if this werenā€™t based on Valveā€™s IP.

I believe this is correct.

I also believe that in the same interview Gabe something like (Iā€™m paraphrasing) ā€œBut why would we remake it? Weā€™re much better at making games now; weā€™d want to change everything in a remake.ā€ Or maybe it was different interview. But he said it either way.

Considering all the things on their plate, Iā€™d say the chances of a Valve-produced remake are pretty much dick.

" did u gies here? Balck Mase is deid OM1G!"

Iā€™m pretty sure the assets and code in BM are intellectual property of whoever made them, and so Valve couldnā€™t sell it without their consent.

What the fuck are you guys talking about? Valve was totally freaked when they heard a small modding community was going to have a remake for HL1. Even at almost 4 years of development, Valve still announced that they were psyched for the '09 release.

But alas, the release was delayed, and BM has probably become something the Valve team donā€™t talk about, like TF2 for the console.

Thatā€™s actually somewhere in a gray area. Itā€™s kind of iffy either way because it could easily be argued those are a derivative work, which means Valve could possibly still own them under current copyright law.

Not that any of this really matters since Valve is totally supportive of the mod community and wouldnā€™t pull that card.

alright Iā€™m taking bets:

what comes first, Black Mesa or Valveā€™s HL1 : HD?

Hl1 HD was released in 2001 IIRC

As for now, they act like BM doesnā€™t exist because it actually doesnā€™t. Itā€™s not been released yet and let me tell you, if Valve does a remake of Half Life before BM(highly unlikely), BM is going to be overlooked.

I play half-life in 1920x1200, thatā€™s HD alright

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valveā€™s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
