Valve at E3 2012

Post sauce or it didnt happen

IDC what they call the next Half-Life game.

The info I read years ago being wrong wouldn’t surprise me.

I have been paying attention to many of the interviews, but I try to not read too much into them. Yes, they admit that episodes don’t work for them. It doesn’t mean that the next Half-Life WILL DEFINITELY BE HL3 OMG!!! like most of your posts shove in our faces. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised no matter what they name it, as long as the name isn’t ridiculous.

All I know is they wouldn’t scrap all work that had been done on ep3 when they abandoned episodic gaming. Sure, HL2 had a bunch of cut content, but they were doing a lot of experimenting to see where they wanted it to go. Ep3/HL3 are much less in question, at least as far as the beginning and one of the major goals go.

“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance, we end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff. So as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d life to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2. The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we’re going through would probably drive people more crazy (sic) than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what’s happening next.”

“We went through the episodes phase, and now we’re going towards shorter and even shorter cycles. For me, ‘entertainment as a service’ is a clear distillation of the episodic content model.”
If it was Episode Three in the development, they would release a few more artworks at least in 5-6 years … when there’s to quiet about something for this long, it usually got cancelled and no to mention each time EP3 files were leaked, Valve said it’s a leftover material and no longer relevant to what they are doing now.

If they have released EP3 6 years after EP2 (9 years after HL2, that’s time for at least 2-3 full-fledged titles) no … they have more respect for themselves than we have for them

So, nothing was actually said about canceling episode three. Just talk about how they want to keep their dev process secret to avoid fanboy bullshit, kind of like BMS. I appreciate the effort tho. most folks wouldn’t even try.

We’re doing this to ourselves. We act so immaturely that in order to communicate to us on our brain frequencies, they’d have to start acting immaturely too. VALVe consists of the most brilliant minds of the gaming world (perhaps with the exception of John Carmack, who’s still at iD). They’ve tried communicating, but it failed on the receiving end of the wire.

In the Developer commentaries for Episode 2, they acknowledge that what they teased at the end of Ep1 had to be scraped because it simply didn’t work gameplay-wise. An intelligent listener would learn from that that showing a game in development too early in the development cycle creates a risk of not fulfilling expectations.

But no, the HL community still demands VALVe to present to them “spoiler’ish” pictures and videos.

I’m actually surprised there aren’t more hacker attacks with social engineering tactics using HL3 themes.

I wonder how many idiots would run (with Admin privileges) an application called “hl3.exe”, if it was accompanied by 6 GBs of random data, and published on torrent sites…
That’s how desperate the community has become.

I have a feeling the next HL installment’s announcement is going to be a huge bomshell. Like, a double whammy or some shit. Like, they announce it in a point in time that no one expects it, and the release date is the day after it’s announced.

I mean, think about it. They don’t need any period of time to advertise the game at all. We’ve all been doing that for them. For years.

I was just going to say that myself. Here’s the way I look at it, many people at Valve (especially recently with “Ricochet 2”) have always said the biggest problem is that with Half-Life, they announce everything too early and get everyone hyped. Then they go back and change the game totally and cause a bunch of confusion. This has happened with both Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Not so much with the episodes since they have a short development cycle though. And Gabe has even said that they don’t want to announce anything “until they have something to show”. That can be interpreted a thousand different ways but it could possibly mean that when HL3 is announced, it’s release could be within a month or two, or even a few weeks after its announcement. Knowing a thing or two about advertising, it wouldn’t be the wisest thing to announce the game and have it come out the next day. Even though there is PLENTY of hype, it’s still necessary to build up more and advertise the game so they can get as many people to buy the game as possible. Also, think about what that would do to Valve’s servers. Millions of people all buying and downloading the game within a dame would destroy them. It’s better to have at least a few weeks for people to purchase the game and pre-load it so it won’t rip apart their servers. The millions of people will still be buying it, but it’ll be a lot less stressful for both ends to have the transactions and downloads spread out.

This is all just speculation but it very well could be true.

from the one source I heard from, they are making the next HL2 game, HL2: Episode 3, scheduled to be released by close to the end of this year( as I can infer, wiki said it was this year) and they are teaming up with Gearbox to make it ( Thus making it shitty, all games that have taken too long to create and Gearbox has made (one so far) have been shitty (Duke Nukem Forever)

That’s so full of shit I can’t even articulate it.

What he said.

What he said.

To be fair, Gearbox did NOT make Duke Nukem Forever. They only dusted off the pile of crap that 3D Realms had been sitting on for the past several years and pushed it out the door because everyone had been waiting so long for it. I don’t mean it was 100% done, but probably like 90% or 95% or something like that. I just mean that Gearbox had little to do with it sucking.

Gearbox has done other games like Borderlands and Halo which weren’t shitty so working with Valve, it should be alright.

Everyone I’ve ever met from Tennessee is just like you.

What is this I don’t even.

The last episode of some TV series are generally feature length. (90 mins +)

Gabe will show something very cool at E3’12!
Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=632kyLysP6c

I bet, all other people will get mad at them for not showing anything Half Life related, because websites told them epic announcements. Just like always.

Repeat for next year

If the next HL is an episode and will still use current Source, Epic will release UE4 on the current gen and close-down their videogame business once the next-gen consoles hit our shelves.

It’s 101,0000001% gonna be HL3 with improved engine and on xbox720/8 and ps4

Episode Three is a relic of the past
