I actually played HL2 + EP1 + EP2 from start to finish on the last lan party I went to, with triplehead 5040x1050 with CM, I found I had loads of people behind me looking for hours, it really does improve the game with big resolutions like this, I did however, keep the original character models, was quite an experience.

True, but I found it was a cool way of playing HL2 which now looks kind of outdated with more modern graphs (“now with more shiny!”) : ), also, to be fair, on CM10 (i think that was the version I was playing) there´s a options panel (outside of the game) that lets you tweak what models to use, and all sorts of options, which is good because this way you can keep it original, but looking better.

Vanilla HL2 is quite outdated on project level. Source can do more - cinematic mod is a proof of concept.
Game engines are always more capable than they look, however, games have to be built with certain restrictions in mind.
That’s why technical demos always look better than the games built on that tech.
