Hey all. New to the community, and was curious to get to know some of you. Never really used a forum, but I check this site daily, so I figured I’d give it a try. So, to the point.

What are your top 5 favorite non-HL games?

Since you all are members of this forum, I’m assuming the HL series easily falls into this list, probably near the top. Its true for me.

These should be the games you couldn’t stop playing, enjoyed every second of, even if it wasn’t the best game ever or its as old as jesus.

  1. Halo - just the first one, I played the crap out of it. 2’s campaign was horrible, 3 was meh. (anyone playing reach? could use some buddies to own faces with)

  2. Metal Gear Solid 4 - the entire series is phenomenal, but that’s what made 4 so much better. SPOILER I nearly @#$% my pants (are we allowed to curse in here? don’t want to offend) when snake returned to shadow moses, and then again when you got to drive rex.

  3. Assasin’s Creed (series) - besides the rinse and repeat in the 1st game, every moment has been awesome.

  4. Mass Effect (series) - ah-mae-zing.

5 was FFVII, good game, but had to be replaced.

  1. ChronoTrigger - Momentary lapse in memory. this is by far my favorite rpg of all time. Saw it in my snes in my living room after I made this post. Had to put it on here.

A little mainstream, but they were for a good reason. So, lay 'em down.

The moment you mention Halo in these forums, you get ready for the flames.

Anyway:

  1. Half-Life - Well, duh.
  2. All Grand Theft Auto games on PC since GTA3 - I love sandbox games and the GTA games are just the most fun of that genre.
  3. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion - Same reason as above but with fireballs and swords.
  4. Mass Effect - Epic games all around.
  5. Uncharted - Both games. They represent all I love about videogames.

edit: Yes, you can fucking curse the shit out of these cunting forums.

  1. GTA (specifically GTA 2, Vice City, and 4, IMO the best of each generation)
  2. Halo 2 or 3 multiplayer (its not the best game ever, but really, its enjoyable to play mp)
  3. FIFA multiplayer on console (when at a friend’s house, not over the internet)
  4. Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy on xbox, both SP + MP
  5. Assassin’s Creed 1 + 2

EDITT: COmpletely forgot about Arkham Asylum, amazing game

These are just the ones I can think of from the top of my head, and it should also be noted that I’m not an extreme gamer so there are most definitely plenty of better games I’ve never played

Don’t worry about swearing or offending people; I do that on a regular basis.

  1. Batman: Arkham Asylum- So far the only Batman PC game that isn’t a mod.
  2. Duke Nukem 3D- sending Enemies to hell on the Business end of a Rocket Propelled Grenade has never been as fun
  3. Monkey Island Series
  4. Mirror’s Edge
  5. Wolfenstein 3D- The Grand-daddy of First person Shooters, and you get to kill Adolf Hitler.

jw, have you ever played GTA 2? If not, its free to download from Rockstar Games, and is in fact my favorite freeware game of all time, and one of my favorite games period

I have played every single GTA game on PC and, honestly, the first two just don’t do it for me.

I think I’m just not a fan of top down view games at all.

Last 3 are pretty replaceable. I like a lot of games.

4. Braid ( Can’t go wrong with mindfuck games )

Do HL1 mods and source mods count as HL games? If they do, then in no particular order:

  1. Starcraft Broodwar
  2. Red Alert 1 & 3
  3. Battlefield 1942
  4. Halo 1
  5. Super Smash Brothers 1 & 3

I’m not including games that were originally HL mods, like Counter-strike, and I’m not including any singleplayer games.

Here’s my top 5 favs.

  1. Quake 1 - Love the mods and mp was insane
  2. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - I discovered this a couple years back after playing Oblivion numerous times, then i completely for got about Oblivion. The game can be great, but it can also be frustrating as hell. It sticks because the game is still much more fun and rewarding then it is frustrating
  3. Descent 1 & 2 (they are so similar i count them together) - Coolest FPS/6-dof game I ever had.
  4. Starcraft - Favorite RTS game. The asymmetrical race balancing is so well done. The second one is an improvement but misses my list because the units don’t sound as cool and its missing some of my favorite units.
  5. Final Fantasy VII - I hate JRPGs but this one struck something in me and stuck with me. It was a very well done story and character development went deep, especially when you understand it.

#5: Super Mario Bros. 3: This was the 1st game I ever played (I Think…) and it’s still awesome
#4 Warhawk: Not much to say here just one of the best online shooters on the PS3
#3 Metroid Prime Hunters: I have many good memories with MPH’s online deathmatch
#2 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: This game needs no explaintion
#1 The Orange Box, Half-Life, Opposing Force, GMOD : yes I know not supposed to put HL games in but that’s just not possible
