Things you DON'T want to see in BM.

Yeah yeah yeah, we’ve read 'em all; things we WANT in Black Mesa. Helmets, mirrors, retcon character references, etc. in the last several months i don’t think there’s been any suggestions posted that haven’t been posted before.

So i propose we start a new fantasy list : Things you DON’T want in Black Mesa!

  • in the opening chapters if the game, if i hear any scientist ask, “Having fun yet, Gordon?” i’m going to lose it. Everybody says this to the newest hire in EVERY job. i don’t care if you’re stocking freight at your local Wal-Mart or managing a small team of production assistants, at every job there’s always one jackoff that asks, “Having fun yet”, every. freaking. day.

  • Fourth-wall breaking wordage regarding “health”, “guns”, “pressing USE keys” or any other jargon commonly read in videogame manuals, tutorials or out-of-game discussion. Real world references like Metal Gear Solid ARE FiNE! i just don’t want the 'wall broken by accident a la Episode:Two.

  • Every GoldSource game had the same stock sound effects for PC movement. Footstep sounds were terrible in the original Half-Life and thanks to the popularity of CounterStrike, i came to HATE the sound of boots on gravel. No matter what surface Gordon’s boots touch, it either crumbles beneath the weight of his feet ( CRUNCH crunch CRUNCH crunch ) or -oddly enough- squeaks and creeks. Either the tiles of Black Mesa’s floors are affixed to their foundation with springs or their maintenance staff needs to switch to a thicker floor wax. A quick sprint across the hall always sounds like a college basketball game. if Gordon’s feet are going to squeak that much, i want to turn around to see some black sole marks! Thank God this is the Source Engine.

  • if guards and HECU are supposed to be weapons experts, make them SOUND like it. There’s a clear and obvious difference between, “magazines” and “clips”. That being said, i AM NOT A WEAPONS EXPERT, nut, fanatic, enthusiast or collector . i don’t even own a real gun and i know the difference. Hollywood ALWAYS screws this up. Please please PUH-LEASE get it right in Black Mesa.

Obviously the game’s been in production for a while, it should be out soon and it’s way too late to start removing features and the like from the game. Nobody should expect any of this to be taken seriously. it’s a list of items to post, discuss and pass the time. A list of realistic expectations. A list of off-the-wall annoyances. A list for the hopeful, the impatient and the totally bored.

Have fun and feel free to post anything.

I loved the old GoldSrc footsteps. I’d love to have an option to have them in BM. I can see how they drove you crazy. Oh yeah, on-topic. I hate really unrealistic puzzles. There were a lot of these in HL1. I want the devs to make puzzles at least a little more believable.

Gordan.

No, I’m pretty sure the OP got it right, it’s GordOn, and he should be in the game.

You can please some of the people all the time, but not all of the people all of the time. It is rather safe to say that everyone will have SOMEthing to not be happy about in game. :s hrug:

My expectations getting crushed.

I don’t want to see the current Alien Grunt & Controller designs. But I know that’s not going to happen. :frowning:

Whats wrong with 'em?

I don’t want to see changes in the current Alien Grunt & Controller designs. They are badass.

EDIT: And I really don’t want to see this room in BM:

Unless if totally updated to make sense this time. I’ve already explained here why I don’t like it.

And then all the points you made about why it’s unrealistic were promptly debunked, so that room makes perfect sense. It’s also an iconic room in HL, so I’m quite sure it’ll be in there. Especially since there’s already media about it.

This thread should be more about things that were in HL1 that you don’t want to see in BM, not things that are already confirmed to be in BM that you think should be removed.

I like that room…

…the water looks pretty…

How the hell does “guns” break the forth-wall? O_o

wait; what are 1st,2nd and 3rd walls?

Considering that was one of the earliest media released for the mod, I think it’s probably safe to say that the area has been overhauled at least somewhat…

That room/puzzle is definitely going to be there in some shape or form, probably, because it was a rather memorable part of the level in the original.

Not exactly. That media was made before the alpha leak, and since then, many things already confirmed in that time suffered changes or were totally removed. The devs themselves until now didn’t stated anything about that room specifically, so the status of its design is undefined.

Yet, it is still safe to say it will be in Black Mesa. Though it will most likely be heavily updated to make more sense.

what about that room doesn’t make sense?

i don’t want to see an mission critical scientist dieing by a physics prop.

lost ep2 3 times because alyx would run into a prop and the prop would glitch out and kill her and I would get the game over thing for lettign her die. :’(

Technically speaking, the phrase “fourth wall” comes from the days of stage plays. You’d have the left wall, the back wall, the right wall, and the invisible “fourth wall” that the audience observes the goings-on through. The actors, however, are to treat that “fourth wall” as merely another wall. Breaking the fourth wall acknowledges the audience, often for humorous effect (“This is reality, Gordon, not some first person shooter.”).

Some feel references to gameplay mechanics by in-game characters breaks this fourth wall. I don’t know how the word “gun” does, or how “health” did in Ep2, considering it’s a decade or two in the future from now/in an alternative timeline where the slang for “walk-over-and-get-healed-packs” have been shortened to “health”.

Hey, it’s possible!

As for me, I don’t really want to see retconned character development in BM. No Alyx. Nothing from Eli except for him complaining about the equipment and then informing you that the phones are out, get to the surface, and he’ll use the retinal scanner for you. No Magnusson. NOTHING FROM HALF LIFE 2 (except for non-gameplay breaking Easter eggs which I will not discuss here).

I don’t even want to see Aperture Science.

No acknowledged retconning for me.
