Kubric has made some great films. I don’t consider 2001 to be one of them. It looks great, it is a technical masterpiece, but it isn’t a good movie. He took the most thinned out version of the story he could, and padded it out with visuals. Was it needed at the time it was made? Probably, but that doesn’t make it a good movie. I think it is one of the most overrated sci-fi films ever.
2010 has more story, actual characters, actual motivations, and consequences. It goes somewhere, and things happen. It isn’t a lot of pens floating around a spaceship cabin for ten minutes, and docking sequences that take ten times as long as they would in any other production.
Most people don’t like 2010 because it wasn’t the original, and it wasn’t made by Kubric. Those are bullshit reasons not to like a movie.

This is kind of silly coming from someone for who 2001 is a favorite movie but I didn’t really like 2010 because I felt 2001 was a great self contained story. 2010 took it and I didn’t like how they continued the story. I haven’t read the book so it’s probably the author’s fault but I just didn’t like how they continued the story.
That and the way 2001 develops, long takes, little voice acting, just Kubrik’s whole filming style really appeals to me. It’s much more interesting to me than 2010 which from what I remember was pretty boring cinematography-wise.
2001 is a spectacle to watch, it’s a pretty interesting movie and well made especially since it was released in '68/'69. 2010 just has nothing interesting about it and just feels like another run of the mill sci-fi movie.

its cooler and more interesting to look at some cool colours and shit that make you think about the nature of conciousness or whatever than to look at two dudes talking about space ships that make you think about space ships
