As a minor request, I personally would like it if the banned list would use the “ban reason” section to actually link to the posts that got them banned. At least then the logic behind the banning would be a little more apparent. Members could see what really does get people banned, as well as making ban abuse a little more apparent.
Looks like this thread seems to have a huge amount of violations of rule #5, I’m talking about you, you know who you are.
It was fun though. I mean the numbers game
Those aren’t even rules though, that’s from the section below the faq rules.
Anyone not following those suggestions put their life in their own hands. :s hrug: just my take on it.
Okay, well it looks like many ITT aren’t following those suggestions when they complain of others flaming them. Reminds me of Soaringscout complaining about hackers in MW2 when he got banned for failing to hack in CS:S.
Enjoying these forums doesn’t necessarily require me to post. Anything that I might be interested in asking would probably be ignored or replied to with disinformation by the community.
I just enjoy reading the replies and giggling to myself.
So, seeing as I’ve lurked here since before the big media release in 2007, I feel I ought to add my opinion. I think that there does seem to be a bias against newer members and those with poor English, however I don’t think that can be helped due to the nature of the Internet. However, there are number of issues that other people have raised and I want to agree with:
-
READ THE FAQ - this gets extremely annoying to read, as well as being unhelpful to people who have just discovered Black Mesa. I can’t remember who suggested it, but if forum members could provide answer and THEN direct people to the FAQ, that would be useful. Seeing as most of the threads like “Got a question? Ask the developers” are over 30 pages long. If there’s only 10 posts per page, that would still be 300 posts to dig through. Can you really expect new people to do that?
-
Mini-modding - I agree with Catz about Raminator, Ram is a core part of the community and his particular ‘brand’ of humour is part of what makes the boards so enjoyable to read. However, Ram is also a developer and hard at work on the mod. I don’t see why members who are only on the boards should be allowed to get away with acting like a mod.
-
Flaming/Trolling and Old/New Members - I’ve never seen any forum on the internet where there is such a difference in the treatment of members by how long they’ve been there. Acting against people who troll and/or flame is a must for any forum. However, here it seems like the older members can get away with anything. At the time of writing, Shasta seems to have been banned, but the fact that it took that many posts just on this thread for him to be banned is quite worrying. Another example would be this from Raminator (apologies for not quoting properly, my Firefox doesn’t work properly):
[COLOR=‘Red’]I have no idea what that’s about, but it’s not restricted to people who’ve posted in this thread. I think it’s based on recent posting activity at a certain time last night when a developer seemed to ban a whole load of people for one day. I’m un-banning them now. Done.
If one moderator has to un-ban a load of people who shouldn’t have been banned, then the developer who unfairly banned a lot of people should have their modding rights removed. -
Release dates and consequent problems - having a release date to aim for is a good means of motivation, and I think that this was a good idea by the development team. However, the video updates are concerning. If you are going to post alpha videos, you should expect people to query what the latest thing is going to look like. Old(er) forum members replying that things will have changed, so don’t complain, is stupid and insulting to the rest of the community. Also, some news on what you are currently doing would make life easier for newer members, even if it was a locked sticky thread simply saying something like:
“We are currently finishing models, levels and animation. We are also play-testing and removing bugs. The mod will be released when it is ready”.
(:fffuuu: Although that’s just me guessing at what the progress is!)
Apologies for the wall of text!
@ Fuzzymage - Well put. Just because I have opinions on certain subjects doesn’t mean I need to express them to the entire world, or at least the users of these forums. Even if I were to post, as stated, it would most likely be met with rude sarcasm and unnecessary remarks. I’ll leave it at that.
Kane got bored. Take note that’s why you don’t post in useless threads, even when they’re in Rams club house cough off-topic cough
That was the reason I steered clear of it, but I got a chuckle out of it.
One less Nazi to deal with I suppose. Surely not the last.
Nazis are suppose to be perfectionists, if you’re going to be one, make sure you have no mistakes what so ever, that was the point I was making in my flame… rolls eyes
I have no idea why he banned them, but I suspect it was for participating in a troll thread.
That and I wager Kane was just bored.
[COLOR=‘Red’]On-Topic: No Nazi’ism/flame wars, Trolling in the definition that Fodder put it is tolerable to me in my opinion, just a little bit, some to keep things interesting, but not too much to be disruptive.
In my own personal opinion, things are fine so long as the Nazis don’t exist on this forum.
Nazi’s in my definition are perfectionists and think they’re far too above other people, and therefore force their opinion to a centralized topic even if they aren’t an expert in the topic, and lecture as if they knew something about it when they actually know absolutely nothing about it, but choose to ignore those people who do know something about it.
I guess what fits the definition of a troll to an extent.
Kane’s uberban was a game, don’t get excited. Raw just freed us few hours before the end of the sentence.
BTW whoever is interested in a ban, the game continue.
Problem is, whatever Shasta answered, he answered it right. But, the guy always seemed to take the intellectual highground, and that’s just not cool, always acting condescending and such. Just pointing out the fact that for what matter of a douchefag flamer he was, he was about 99% right, just not right in a nice way.
Umm… well that’s a little worrying. How can you justify banning people by being bored? Game or not, that kinda goes against the idea that mods should be there to moderate the content, not arbitrarily ban people…
I agree that we could do with a little more moderation, for example stopping endemic troll-feeding before it gets out of hand, but I have to point out that JamesKane isn’t a moderator, he’s a BM Developer and therefore has mod privileges. It’s not necessarily his responsibility to keep the forums organized and troll-free.
Still doesn’t change my view point on trying to be a Nazi. He was correct most of the time, but not all of the time.
I poked holes in his post and it was under-constructive in how he was using punctuation, grammar, and paragraphs.
My main problem is that it was just boxes instead of a few sentences then another line & double space to give some breaks in between his rants, but I’m just fuming now.
If he did do that, I would have less of a problem, but I’d still have one. Over all, his “box tactic,” as I would like to call it, Wall 'o text approach rather than what I do, is rather annoying in my opinion.
A reader will get lost in the sea of words analogies and other such things that come with the English language and around half-way through you loose the reader. (The general attention span of an average passer in the internet is around 30 seconds at max, unless they really focus cue smoke coming out of said persons head)
That being said, I could fit into the category of being a Nazi in some form, but I only turn it on when some one else decides to do it, not before.
Though I do agree said person was a whole hearted jackass.
I’m not justifying his actions. What a moderator or developer does is not our concern, there’s nothing you can do, but complain about it.
He IS a developer, and has certain rights. They can ban for a joke if they want to, or for just a game, I can’t say it’s fair, but it’s how it works.
The world keeps turning even with out you. What I’m trying to say, is that you can’t control what they do, but you can control what you do, if you avoid doing stupid things, you have no fear of getting banned, that is my philosophy.
We all knew what we were up to It was kind of a joke in response to Ram’s straw game he made few weeks ago (which ended similarly btw).
[COLOR=‘Plum’]I would just like to take a small timeout to explain the thingy ya’ll saw with the mass bannings before this gets prolonged longer than needed.
One of the things done every once in a while is one of the moderators may choose to initiate a game and others may decide to participate. The winners win, and the loosers are banned for a day. This temp ban is not a part of their permanent record nor is it taken seriously by ANYone including the moderators.
What a few of you witnessed is a game that was played out last night. There was a thread (now moved to a secret area) that was called “the ban game”. (or something like that). In short, everyone that participated in the ban thread GOT banned for a day. Another game played that was quite humorous was a thread called “draw a straw”. Again, one person won, one person lost miserably, and the rest were banned for a day.
You may ask “WHY IN THE WORLD DO THE MODERATORS DO THIS?? THAT IS ADMIN ABUSE??!!”
I have a small reason that may or may not be true: Some of you people really need to get off the internet and get out and GET A LIFE! Consider it our own PBS version of “Get out and play an hour a day”
Thanks for reading. Please Continue.
Double post on purpose:
Any chance we can remember to not name names? I really want to keep this complaining thread as ANTI attacking as possible.
Thanks again folks.
Thank you for properly explaining 'Mam.
As I said earlier, what the administrative staff does is not our concern. The point is, if you want to participate in that stuff, you can. If you are, be prepped to accept the consequences.
yup. I agree. I am actually glad that I missed out on last night… cuz as we all know even moderators are not safe!!
