The Forum | Complaints & Concerns Go Here

but why? the more attitude people get from these idiots the less likely they are to stay and thus you’ll end up with a forum just full of trolls and the such, leaving BM with an epic game but a poor forum based “community”.

The thing that causes this imo is there is no crackdown on disrespectful behaviour. look at some of the other large online communities and there is a zero-low tolerance on people with attitude problems. Bans seem to be handed out rather arbitrarily and for no real consistent length of time as well.

BM forums just need a bit of a shakedown imo. start acting against the “elitist” (thanks taxi - good choice of word) members and from there the community will start to grow.

Uh… most people here are nice?

Did I do it right?

WAT

Exactly, how difficult is it to increase your post count by saying things such as “read the FAQ” or some other drivel that basically makes you regret posting.

Some in here actually have valid questions but because they apparently have under 50 posts it is taken half seriously or not at all. So what is the standard for the first 50 posts? Just non stop yanking of the chain of how great the mod is supposed to be?

Not too mention there are so many sub forums of the forum that you get lost in trying to figure out what and where to post a question. Ask the developers, discuss the youtube channel, interviews, and they all center around one thing, the mod. So essentially you have several different forums and topics to discuss ONE thing. Very odd and confusing.

If we are speaking frank I feel the whole implementation of this whole thing went wrong from the get go when no real time line was established, (from what I see) and the “whenever it is done” attitude will only get you so far. Not saying we are owed anything but if it is a free mod, you only have to say it once and we get it. If you are not open for rational discussion without the “free” word being used repeatedly, why even start it to begin with? Normally I do not do noble and honorable things and then mention it to the one I am helping every 5 minutes.

I would like to help or be involved, but involved in what exactly? Some of us have no idea where this mod is in development, how close to ready, what you are having problems with. Nothing. So you get angry when posters get angry and ask questions when the whole attitude to begin with was condescending. How far is the “whenever we are done” attitude supposed to take you? Was the 2009 date basically just a ruse or was it a “kick in the pants and get moving” kind of date.

Banning people for basically having the same attitude as the devs is pretty hypocritical.

Hell even some of the mods are saying and doing the exact same things some are banned for. That is one of the reasons I am reluctant to post. Heck I am sure because I do not have 1000 posts I will be called a “troll”, “flamer” or whatever else is used in here soon enough.

One of the main reasons I come here is because people speak their minds.

If they think your/I’m being retarded, they WILL tell you exactly that. If they hate your/my guts, they tell you. the politicly correct mask comes off and you see what people think of you. Yeah, not everyone likes you/me, but I’d rather be called an idiot by a bunch of people that I know will tell me if I’m being one than have nobody say a thing and let me continue with my idiocy.

I’m not saying that everyone that gets gutted here actually deserves it, there was alot of retards show up a while ago(yes, just being foolish because they felt like it) and now the regulars get up in arms when someone makes a stupid (wether intentional or just uniformed) post/thread because we’ve heard it literally hundreds of times. I know that isn’t a good reason to overreact, but it is one of the reasons why.

People like a certain person that reminds me of “pasta” really should be banned, because they only post to be rude and don’t have any reason to act like that at all.

I will put on a politicly corect facade if I have to, but if people have to be polite back to me no matter what I say, I’m outta here.

Sounds interesting but then we have to get into, is this place going to be a gigantic free for all or is there going to have to be some kind of order here?

Quite honestly I have a wife and two kids and a career of 20+ years and could care less what people on the internet think of me. If they want to answer every question with a bunch of childish rhetoric and nonsense then that is on them. I will not lose any sleep over it.

I do not see the point of disagreeing with someone so vehemently that the only response is a tirade laced with insults, swear words and other common nonsense that has absolutely nothing to do with the thread, topic or anything else which hijacks the thread and then everything gets lost in translation.

Why not have the playing field level, for all? If you have nothing to add to the post, why even respond? If all someone has to add is insults, why even post? Why not send it to email or PM or whatever system is used here?

What you may consider idiocy, someone else might consider thought worthy. Painting with too broad a brush is what brings the board down to an almost adolescent tone. The mini-modding is really old and if I have nothing to add to your post other than “read the FAQ”, “when it is done” what is the point of having mods?

The playing field has to be leveled or at least if it is not leveled, make the rules plain and simple for all parties and that really should come from the board admin or the one who is in charge.

Good post though fodder. Excellent points. Sorry for the wall of words and incessant rambling.

The accuracy of this statement made me cringe a bit. That’s the thing, you see. Sometimes, rudeness, trolling, or flaming may come off as such, but there’s a fine distinction between someone being brutally honest, and someone looking to get the whole “Internet Badass” image going on.

I’ve seen people come in with legitimate questions, and of course on that first page there’s going to be a one-word post saying something along the lines of “Idiot. (link to FAQ, or another thread that doesn’t really explain the question at hand)”

Now, of course with new members there’s always the thought that hey, maybe there is already a post with my question, and maybe I should go look.

Chances are, they didn’t use the search function. But that’s all about being new to the forums! I mean, a nice little “Hey mate, (answer to the question), but you should try using the search function, it’s been asked before.”, or after answering, ship 'em off to the FAQ, is a hell of a lot easier to understand, deal with, accept, and move on with than some jackass ordering you around, looking like a flaming asshole. Some people around here sure, might answer the question, but how do they do that? Throw around insults as if we’re some kind of idiotic, rampant six-year olds trashing the place?

Questions always get answered around here. People always get trolled by the regular elitists. That’s how it works. But you know, there’s exceptions to that rule. I’ve seen some of the elite actually work with some, and that should earn them some credit right there, not instantly trolling or flaming a new guy. And we can all tell that guy/girl when the time arises.

Shotinthedark is right there is a lot of elitism on the forum. There are some cases where certain members think that they are “superior” and should “educate” other members, when all they do is breed resentment and initiate flaming and trolling. Maybe if some members went a bit easier on newbs then all would be fine?

Having said that some people on the forum are great friendly helpful people and I love them all :stuck_out_tongue:

It all depends on who will respond. Some members will answer or post a link to the FAQ or the wiki, others will not and bash, mostly because the question could be find very easily, especialy when you are asked to read the FAQ when you join.
It’s like going to the mall : at the front door you find a map where almost everything is pimpointed but because some skiped it, they will ask those kind of info to a regular customer (aka a member). This guy could be gentle and help or let them down. If the same lost person continue to ask question like the previous one and still not look for it in the FAQ, then flames could happend.

there are only so many points that anyone posting can make on a forum. Here’s my take on it for this place:

New information relevant to forum subject - Not Applicable; only devs have new information, and are only releasing obsolete information about Alpha.
Assenting opinion on new information relevant to forum subject - Information was obsolete, so every other member treats opinion as invalid. Every member flames poster for making uninformed opinions.

Dissenting opinion on new information relevant to forum subject - Information was obsolete, so every other member treats opinion as invalid. Every member flames poster for making uninformed opinions.
Old information relevant to forum subject - Every other member that has been here longer than the poster has heard about it already and calls the original poster stupid for not knowing about it already and thinking it’s worth making a thread/post about.
Assenting opinion on old information relevant to forum subject - Every other member flames poster for resurrecting dead topic. Alternately every other member flames poster for posting a new topic that already has a thread for it.

Dissenting opinion on old information relevant to forum subject - Old information is already set in stone and wont be changed so poster’s opinion is invalid. Every other member flames poster for resurrecting dead topic or flames poster for posting a new topic that already has a thread for it.
Flamebait information not relevant to forum subject - Everyone responds calls everyone else an idiot. Thread grows to 117 pages of flaming before finally getting locked.

New non-flamebait information not relevant to forum subject - Only 5 members respond, nobody else cares. Thread gets buried.

Old non-flamebait information not relevant to forum subject - Every other member flames poster for resurrecting dead topic. Alternately every other member flames poster for posting a new topic that already has a thread for it. Thread grows to 117 pages of flaming before finally getting locked.

When it comes down to it, there are only 2 things that makes a forum worth posting in: New information about the forum topic, and open, polite, constructive discussion and debate about old information and other unrelated topics. This forum rarely has either.

True.

Not postin’ because this is how shit go down.

gtfo!,

no just kidding

So far I think what I am hearing is that there are a lot of people currently on the forums that are eager to stomp on the newcomers. Some folks may feel a bit surprised by the blindsided onslaught behavior. Different people react differently to surprise.

My 12 year old gets pissy when he is put into a situation of “surprise” whereas my 5 year old becomes a quivering ball of joy at the prospect of a “surprise”. I wonder if the same thing may be happening here? :s hrug:

Anyway, on one hand the BM team is built with professionals. On the other hand the BM team also likes to have fun and on a regular basis they poke and prod at each other in a way you would normally see with siblings. Personally I find it endearing.

The point I guess I am getting to is that when new comers come to this forum, they are expecting to find professionals, not amateurs. Yet when they come here and start to post… well, I think perhaps when they look up close they are not seeing what they thought they saw when they were looking at a distance.

So how do we find our balance? I would hate for this place to become deserted cuz no one knows how to have fun. But I would also hate to have bad vibes spread all over cuz we are dicks all the time and cannot figure out how to show a bit of patience to someone that is getting their feet wet.

Allow me one last observation and then you guys can go back to describing the things you are not liking about what you see here. (This post is more just a timeout for myself.)

A couple weeks ago for a brief two days, I had a job at a company that had a couple of gamers working there. I asked them if they ever heard of Black Mesa cuz I was one of the voice actors. Their reaction wasn’t what I thought I would get. Words like “vaporware” and “unprofessional” came up in their grumbling. Lord knows I can understand where the word “vaporware” came from, but “unprofessional”? I was taken back and went silent. Are we unprofessional? Why would our team be seen as something less than what I know it is?

:trying to be serious:

People look at all non-company made mods like that. It is not your fault. Maybe your mod could even change that.

Looks to me like there was a bit of jealousy.

Professionalism is the least of my concerns when posting here, hell it’s nice too see mod members that are just casually posting. It’s just when a staff member encourages a troll it kind of cancels out the idea “oh hey cool the staff members are chillax” and brings it too “wow, douchebags”.

One of the reasons I don’t post so much is because people post long-winded speeches about something, and I fall asleep reading halfway through. I wake up, realize I haven’t made any progress and just end up closing the window.

Oh, and I only joined a month and a half ago.

Wait, what?

that would be me. :chuckle:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
