The fate and possible survival of Dr. Breen

That’s ironic because before Gman was shown to be an agent working for a third party, many people thought he was the administrator of Black Mesa. I never thought so, I just assumed he was some guy in a suit.

Uhm, wat? What do you mean with many? I assume everyone thought he was some guy in a suit just like you.

A lot of people thought he was the admin. Others thought he really was a government agent.

There is still no guarantee he wasn’t. There were a lot of indications in HL1 that he was working for a shadow agency with strong influence in The US government, and if you know anything about ufo/government conspiracies, this seems quite plausible in the HL universe. Gman’s character is, after all, largely inspired by Cigarette smoking man from the X Files, with whom he shares many similarites…

and I definitely felt this relation return during his “heart to heart” in Ep2.

1: The mention of a host body for Breen in HL2
2: the replaying of the Breen message to his bosses about the host body as gordon and alyx have the angry grub encounter as the advisor pod is readied for launch.
3: the brief flash of Breen’s face during the gman speech in Ep2

All of these things point to more Breen in the future. Why keep mentioning him if he is dead?

I’ve never seen that last one.

It’s during the Gman speech.
“I have learned to ignore such naysayers when…quelling them…was out of the question”
Breen’s distorted face flashes on the screen when gman says “naysayers”

I think that also proves Breen had to do with gman. Maybe Breen didn’t accept gmans offer. Maybe gman even offered to almost everyone who got out of the facility?

Still: Never seen before until now.

I think Breen had ties to Gman’s party, rather than was given an offer by the gman. They both knew Freeman was valuable, and Breen protested against Gman acquiring alyx. I think gman may be able to look into the future to some extent, as he seems to know the parts that his “assets” will play ahead of time.
It’s his ultimate motive that’s still so mysterious, and Eli was killed before he could tell you

I was under the assumption that it was the combine who need stopping, not their powerless figurehead.

Let’s stop and think for a minute about that host-body message. First they go through the effort of having Breen in that scene, rather than just having him go strait to the teleport. Than later in the citadel in Episode 1, go through the effort of showing that exact same scene again. If it wasn’t going to amount to anything, why would they go through the effort of showing you twice?

Well, it could be to fill in the gaps about who breen is for those who haven’t played HL2. Sure most people who own Ep1 should have already played HL2, but not everyone does. Well written stories have ways of bringing those details back up so that players just coming into the storyline on the second book aren’t left completely out of the loop.

But yeah, I still feel that there is a specific significance to his reappearance, and some of it might have just been intended to keep that option open, even if they ended up not using the idea of bringing him back.

Never thought about that actually, I’d always believe that he just got blown to pieces.

Unless that shield around him some how saved him from the huge explosion and or falling damage i would say hes pretty dead. Also he sounded like he knew he was screwed imo.

Edit: its true that he seems to be mentioned over and over in different ways, i thought this was just for nostalgia or something. but yea i guess it could also be building to a re-appearance

And then Smithers will make a re-appearance! And so will Otis! And let’s not forget Einstein! Of course! That’s why all the foreshadowing, they’ll all make reappearances!

I’m not actually sure that was intentional. It’s a static texture that was used for Breencasts in HL2 and they could have just used it there so they didn’t have to make a whole new texture.

We are only talking about breen

Knowing who Breen is wasn’t exactly important for knowing what was going on in Episode 1. It’s not like he was ever really mentioned by anyone after that scene, and the only thing before it was when he was seen on the monitor. In the intro.

He is too, making a sarcastic point to extending the logic to all other characters no matter how inapplicable it is. I’d actually agree with this if I could remember ANY of those characters making an appearance after they were supposed to have died.

You’re a credit, aren’t you
