It says on wikipedia that Hyundai Heavy Industries built the rig, shouldn’t they and their failed safety equipment get some of the blame? Speaking of which what about whoever authorised the drilling?
Yes and no. They hit a pocket of pressurized gas and it rocked back up through the pipe, overloading the equipment and exploding it… while your scenario is not exactly what happened, they’re still responsible.
Irresponsible shit like this pisses me off, same thing can be said about the recent collapse of the housing market that caused the current recession on US soil. They need to be regulated better, and the irresponsible idiots fired when serious breaches in security and safety are detected.

Sorry for bump, but TBH, I think the people partially responsible for this are the guys who kept whining about how the drill platform was so close too shore, where they could contain it better, so BP put it all the way in the gulf, and now this is happening. I know BP is responsible for the most part, but there are some others that should be held accountable as well.

Every other country in the world mandates that all deep water rigs drill a relief well in case the main well fails, except for the US which leaves the decision whether or not to have a backup plan up the the invisible hand of the free market.
