You know, I’m kind of ashamed a game hadn’t used a similar premise yet.
Imagine, such a 10-km-deep oil well is tapped, which has been isolated for so long with so many organic compounds while under so much pressure… Disaster strikes, and the well leaks freely, and unleashes a hostile ancient-but-now-practically-alien ecosystem into the earth’s oceans.

It’s that kind of uninformed opinion that has kept this oil spewing into the gulf. An explosion from the side would fix it in the same way a hooker in stilettos stepping on your urethra keeps you from ejaculating.
