Does anyone know of a System Shock 2 remake (preferably on the Source engine) that’s still active?
it was released as Bioshock
Yeah that’s not what I meant, BioShock is considered the spiritual successor to System Shock 2. I’m talking about an actual remake, just like BMS is a remake of HL1.
As far as I know there isn’t one, but really, what’s wrong with the original? If you worry about graphics just use this: System Shock 2 High rez textures and this System Shock 2 High quality models.
You mean appart from the fact that I’ve been trying to get to run the damn thing on any post-Windows 98 OS without success ??
Even with all of the latest community patches I can’t get it to get past the intro cutscene
And HL1 with the HD pack looks decent enough, but judging from the fact that you’re on these forums I assume that you’re also keen on the BMS remake
It would be wonderful if this game was on GOG.com but I seriously doubt it’ll ever be.

That’s BIG MONEY! Big EASY Money!
Who the hell owns the SS2 IP?
Yes, I’ve already voted for that one. That’s the thing, it’s in copyright limbo, last I heard it’s in the hands of EA :’(
I did it, dear lord in heaven I finally did it! After five years I finally managed to install and play System Shock 2, and on Windows 7 no less
Now, all I need to do is try and install the updated textures and models.
Still, just imagine this game remade on a current engine like the Source engine, now that would kick arse!
You best be trollin’.
Tell us how! I loved Bioshock and have been wanting to see where it all started.
I downloaded the HOTU version of SS2 (see link below), although it should also work with the retail version. This version is already patched to the latest version and has ogg and divx audio/video respectively.

Now I just used the multicore and widescreen/DDFIX patches, but if you’re getting additional errors then also apply the appropriate patches.
Then go to this page:

And follow the instructions at the bottom to change your resolution.
That should do it!
@ Collision: Huh? Why would I be trolling?
The sauce engine is 5 years old, far from being a new engine. Sure they’ve updated it several times, but the base engine isn’t exactly new.
Is that what you’re getting at collision?
You take a look at screenshots of Half-Life 2 (2004) and those in the BMS media section (2009) and tell me that looks like a five year old game. Sure it’s still the same basic engine, but that’s the point in the modularity of the Source engine, there doesn’t need to be a Source engine 2. It’s continually updated, who knows what new features it’ll have when Ep3 comes out.
It might not be Crysis, but then again, the engine is the only good thing with Crysis, other than that it’s but a mediocre shooter at best.
Hell, I’d be happy with a SS2 remake on a heavily modified Quake 3 engine, like the one used in Star Trek Elite Force 2.
Point is, the Orange Box version of the Source engine is by no means outdated.
System Shock 2 may have been good, but I think you’ll find nobody else feels it merits a remake on a current gen engine, just the same as in 10 years nobody will want to remake Bioshock on a new engine.
They’re just… not that sort of game.
What makes Half-Life so remake-friendly in contrast? Really because in the original it was very basic game mechanics, not many steps up from Doom, and yet it was so compelling and managed to tell a story and we all love it for what it was.
It’s hard to describe why but there are just some games that will never be remade, especially ones that already have recent sequels with very similar gameplay. The main reason I can think of is that it wouldn’t be so rewarding, even if done well it would recieve minimal appreciation and not be worth the effort.
I think it also has a lot to do with mod support, SS2 never had any real mod support like the Doom/Quake/UT/HL games and so after finishing the game…there’s nothing left.
After having played Half-Life, most people played mods and since the Source engine is essentially a heavily upgraded GoldScr engine, those who modded the original also had some decent experience in modding HL2.
Maybe if System Shock 3 is finally released people will want to do a remake on that engine. It would also clear out any legal issues since it would be a mod to a game based on the same IP as the mod. Just like BMS is a mod that uses the HL IP for a game made by the owners of the Half-Life IP. If this mod were to be for any other game, say UT3, VALVe might not have been so lenient. Now both parties benefit since it will be a good incentive to buy one of the VALVe games just to play the mod.
It’s highly unlikely that a SS2 remake is in the cards, and the longer it takes the less people with fond memories of the game will want to remake it
Umm… actually I think when an old game gets a recent sequel it’s the perfect time for a remake no matter how similar the gameplay is.
Resident Evil on the Gamecube
Bionic Commando: Rearmed
Secrets of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Serious Sam HD
I’m sure there’s more.
The sauce engine?, sounds groovy XD
What exactly are you using IP to mean here? Just out of curiosity…
Oh welcome to the internets. You must be new here.
