Ubisoft released this on their Facebook page today. It’s confirmed that the game will feature a pirate protagonist (who’s hopefully pops a little more than Connor) and a more nautical setting.
Thoughts on this very sudden and unexpected announcement?

Considering the naval combat was my favorite aspect of AC3 I like this idea. But isn’t it odd that they would call this ACIV? Apparently they reserve those titles for New protagonist + New Era. Apparently this fits that criteria, but would the normal gameplay elements of AC on land still be usable when in port in some major city?

This. I’m still playing Brotherhood through, and with this coming out I feel less of a need to play AC3 immediately after Revelations.

Yeah, I was going to say, weren’t the naval battles one of the most well-received parts of ACIII? I guess that this is the publisher taking a hint.

As a sailing game AC3 left a lot to be desired. The ships are powered speedboats and are made of glass. The graphics are nice though.
Those of us interested in that stuff took a good look at AC3 and walked away. Will AC4 be better? That is an awfully small map for sailing games. I am not optimistic and will stay with other more satisfying sailing games. That video is just a short piece of one of them.

anyway if they were smart they’d take the 4 out of the title and make it a spinoff like brohood/revelations and make the real Assassin’s Creed 4 set in World War 1

That would verge into third person shooter territory, although I do admit the Six Day War would certainly make for an interesting setting for a game. Probably not a Creed property, though.
you could probably make a super grim game about it where you are an egyptian soldier and all the info you get is wrong and all your buddies are slaughtered or taken prisoner and shot and finally you have to try and retreat across the suez canal and you are machine gunned by your own dudes
