Spoilers? Are you serious? Okay, I get you don’t mean plot-spoilers, you mean you don’t want the new environments spoiled. Or at least I hope you don’t mean plot-spoilers; HL was released more than a decade ago, after all. But anyway, what’s the harm in showing us a few updated screenshots? Comparisons are really fun to do, and you will have nothing new spoiled for you, so it’s a win-win.
Also, anyone who thinks taking a few screenshots is going to delay the game needs to seriously reconsider that belief. It’s okay, I’ll I give you a few seconds to think it over…
Yes, exactly, that’s a completely ridiculous idea.
I agree with you all the way on this one, and they really should take the time to please some of the people that have been waiting for so many years. Yes, I know, they don’t owe use anything… but this is getting a little silly. However, IMO I don’t care for any media besides trailers, but I see your point and think they should please the fan base like you.
Everyone’s different. Some people just want the mod, other people want a little something to keep them interested. Why not please everyone? I just want to see everyone happy and keep the bitching off the forums.
You clearly have never worked on a mod have you? It takes time to find a good spot, get a good situation going, stay away from NPC’s so they act like you are not there and they go about business, make sure everything in the picture is good and worth showing.
The thing is, taking a nice picture to show off does in fact take time away from development. Personally I’d be fine if they didn’t show any more media until release. They already have enough picture that you can pretty much recreate the levels in your head. I’d like to enjoy the mod without saying to myself, “hmm I’ve already seen all this.”
Also, too many people think that the start of a promotion means the end of the promotion. It’s not all going to happen at once people. Have some fucking patience…
But anyway, I too really don’t want any more media at this point. I really on’t want to play through the game having seen everything. However I’d love to hear any concrete information on how the mod is going and on a possible release date. The campaign was really kind of unsuccessful. It should have happened when they were actually ready to lead up to release. After a month on inactivity it really seizes to be a campaign and just becomes an independent update.
Also, this has probably been mentioned somewhere else on the forum but, under the wiki’s Gallery of New Files there’s an HL1 screenshot named “Topside Helipad HL1 Comparison.jpg” as well as several other HL1 screenies. The screenies all correspond to the recent media release. Could those be screenshots the devs are using to make a comparison reel? Or were they just uploaded to be seen and compared to the media release as is?
I think I remember something about the devs saying they’d make a comparison reel close to release. Could this be a part of that?
I myself took most of those screens from Half-Life: Source and added them to the wiki, to the page dedicated to this 13th Media Release. Others added one or two that were missing. And the room with the Vort is totally new, so there is no comparison to make.
Well I learned something from this. Working on a game from scratch and I am sure not going to start any “promotion” campaign until the game is finished. Not 90 per cent done, not 99 per cent done. 100 per cent done.
Sometimes doing promotion helps motivate yourself and your work, and sometimes after working for so long on something, knowing that the community is excited to see your work is the motivation you need to keep going.
What a silly metaphor. In fact that doesn’t make any sense what so ever… who here is starving for media? There’s seriously a shit ton in the wiki, go check it out for yourself, it’s really not hard… there’s actually a button that says wiki at the top of the page. Also what are they offering that we get to refuse? They gave us a decent sized update a while back when the campaign started and they’ve promised to continue it.
Okay. Let’s just sort something out. I’m feeling like ranting. We’re all been waiting for a mod that’s taken a long fucking time, but it’s not like if we don’t get updates we’ll die. Seriously. Everyone needs to chill out. Yes, media would be awesome. Yes, I’d love to see some game play. Everyone would! Guess what though? The developers know how popular their mod is and they’re working on it. They’re actually doing something that we get to play for free, so we have to stop ranting and raving like Al Sharpton… this shit reminds me when I used to sit in smoke filled VFW with my grandpa.
I usually keep my mouth shut and nothing has really provoked currently me but there’s been quite the amount of butt hurt over this media campaign. The dev’s are probably really embarrassed that the time frame is a little whacky, and I feel like some of you guys are just slapping them in the faces/beating them down. Knock that shit off! We could all be patient like some people are saying to do, and at the same time focus all that bitchy cry fest attitude twordes something constructive.
Also don’t tell me that there’s nothing else to talk about in this thread. We could discuss things they could do to improve their PR instead of insulting them. We could talk about possible future updates and imagine an awesome future full of Black Mesa. We could also just talk about the status of the Facebook page because it seems to me like people are talking there. I’m just going to trail off this rant…
TL;DR Stupid metaphor got me in a rant. Stop complaining about lack of media, it’s insulting to the devs. Be patient. If you don’t have anything constructive to say then stay out of the thread.
I’m not talking about the media itself, but rather the anticipation of an upcoming release of Black Mesa. I’m well aware that most things the developers say should not be used to guess at the progress of Black Mesa (especially since it annoys them greatly), but if anything (other than the soundtrack release) is going to be treated as a sign of the game’s upcoming release, it would be this social media campaign. It’s hard for many people to be patient when it sounds like the game is in the home stretch. It’s not the absence of media that’s difficult to deal with, it’s the implied “Sorry, but Black Mesa isn’t really in the home stretch,” that comes along with it.
The only reason I made my comment anyway was in response to the idea that patience somehow breeds more patience. If that were true, there’d be no such thing as the phrase “running out of patience”, and people here wouldn’t be constantly prying for even the smallest detail about Black Mesa. Anyone who’s been here for any length of time ought to be well aware that patience is not a common virtue around here. I don’t see the benefit in lashing out at the developers over the execution of the social media campaign, but I understand why people are impatient about it. Expecting those people to somehow be patient despite the long wait and the arrival of the long-anticipated media campaign is an unrealistic expectation. It would be nice if everyone had the ability to relax and just let the developers do their thing, but that simply is not going to happen. You’ve been around for a while. You must realize by now that yelling at the haters is 100% ineffective. If you’re ranting simply to relieve stress, that’s fine. But if you’re ranting in the hopes of actually getting the haters to listen and comply with your demands, your efforts will be just as futile as those of the haters trying to browbeat the developers into releasing or providing updates. I don’t like seeing people continue to complain, speculate, and interrogate–especially when the developers have proven time and time again that it does nothing but harm–but I know that there’s no angry tirade or witty retort good enough to change anything around here.
And yes, I fully realize that comparing the wait for a game to starvation is extreme, as well as being insulting to starving people somewhere, but where’s the fun in a subtle simile?
By the way, though I joined only recently and my post count is tiny, I’m not new here. I’ve been lurking for years. I know all about keeping an eye on the stickied threads in The Cafeteria for developer updates, particularly from Raminator and JamesKane. I know all about the Wiki and the “Gallery of New Files” link that makes it easy to see the most recent screenshots added to the site. I know that there’s no point in begging for media, pestering for a release estimate, or trying to get answers for anything involving Xen. I was able to get by for years without an account here, because I was content to wait for Black Mesa without constantly asking for details or release estimates. I’ve only ever had one question for the developers regarding Black Mesa, and I waited two years before actually getting around to signing up here so I could ask it. A month and a half later, I still haven’t received an answer to it, but that’s ok. I think I’m doing a pretty good job of being patient. I haven’t complained once about the development of Black Mesa. When Black Mesa didn’t make the 2009 target, I didn’t complain. Here we are in the second half of 2012 and I’m still not complaining. I’m pretty sure I can wait without getting angry, desperate, or butt-hurt until either Black Mesa is released or the project is abandoned.
I wasn’t trying to be rude to you, what so ever. So I’m truly sorry. I get what you’re saying here, too. But I wasn’t directing my rant at you or the haters, I was speaking out to the regulars and intellectual members of the forum. (again not an insult at you, and not calling you stupid.) I seriously think that if enough of the forum vets start to realize this about the media then others will follow in their opinion. It’s kind of like members moderating the BS I’ve seen in this thread. And when I said where the wiki was, I was more or less talking to some of the people that simply failed to realize it. You didn’t provoke me so I wasn’t mad at you.
I have a huge amount of respect for the Developers, but I also respect people for being patient. Patience is a virtue, and it’s really hard to be patient for shit. Today I got angry because I was waiting for my money to come in… haha. Anyways, I really hope people will start to respect the dev’s on this thread and be a little more behaved. You can’t really do anything about the trolls but who cares about them anyways.
Oh and also, you are correct about that being a simile. Sorry And thank you for the mature response to me, I deserved a little bit of a lashing for appearing to be a dick.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
