Should I Play HL1 First?

Anybody want to help me drag this guy outside and shoot him in the face? :stuck_out_tongue:

I prefer HL2.

Me too, but it’s just because the original HL graphics look kinda wonky (which, luckily, is about to change!). The only thing that makes me still play HL and its expansions is the fact that they go easy on my 128MB video card…

They go easy on my 32 meg Dx7 graphics card. But then, so did HL2…

I prefer 1 for the sole reason that playing inside BMRF just felt way more epic than City 17. More creepy, more interesting.

Aw man, I died a little inside.

Really? You thought that when it was released, or did you pick the game up much later? I remember picking it up around release time and thinking the graphics were awesome, I was really excited because I just bought a new PC that was able to run it haha.

I prefer HL1 to HL2.

I actually got the game about two years ago, so I felt the graphics looked somewhat crappy… Specially because I had played Half-Hife 2 first, hahaha! I’ll finally buy a decent gaming computer by the end of the year, though, so I’ll wait until then before I download Black Mesa.

Speaking of which, I should play some Half-Life, for a change. I wonder if there is a way to make the HEV Suit use all its voice files, not just the handful it uses by default…

Well no duh… It is from 98…

Seriously though, I’ve always liked the general visual style of Black Mesa.

I played them both for the first time within a few days of each other. Hl2 is just better in many ways. That’s one of the reasons I’m looking forward to BM, to fix many of HL’s little flaws, or at least bring it up to par with HL2. The source engine and graphics are just the icing on the cake.

What are those ways? The only real reason I liked the original better was the setting, but I did like them both.

well i just complete hl1 again today for the 100bnth time :stuck_out_tongue: but i will say this the crapest part of the game is xen. its just so poorly designed compaired to the rest of the game. . . but as we know when BM is released we can all finaly fight the nialinth with proper graphics and be able to actualy work out wt the hell half the crap in xen is. . . on an un-related note are those things that look like the antlient repelent things from hl2 for that purpose or are they just random biotech that valve thought would look cool ?

I thought the entire second half of the game was very good, but nowhere near as good as the first half. For me, games are all about atmosphere, and the lack of creepiness just didn’t cut it. My favorite part of the whole game was Blast Pit. It just exemplified perfection.

If you played HL1 at release and HL2 at release you’d like HL1 better, playing HL1 for the first time these days you wont get 100% out of it because of the dated graphics.

Agree with Deimos. Back then, playing it for the first time… It was just too much!! :’(

I didn’t really care about the graphics. It was the broken auto-save system that would send me back several maps if I died. The virtual non-existence of story, which left me constantly wondering what I was doing and why for 90% of the game. As well as the often frustrating puzzles. The setting also seemed to lack any degree of believability at times, not realism, believability, such as the seemingly random structures that don’t make any sense at all, even for pseudo-scientific equipment. Sometimes NPC’s would have to be physically pushed around, which is understandable. Confusing as hell pushing props, when trying to grab and nudge a box forward sends you flying at high speed.

Early in the game I loved the feeling of running around the office complex and nearby locations, because (at the time) I had no idea if I was taking the right path or not, the feeling which disappeared later in the game because everything felt more and more blatantly linear. If memory serves me I had a similar feeling in HL2, which actually felt justified to a degree with following the underground railroad, but would have been nice to have in some of the later parts, but I wasn’t expecting it to change, so it wasn’t disappointing.

The platforming on Xen, specifically the floating rocks from the first few maps.

Haven’t played much of DM, not much more then a round or two. Hate the magnum scope, seems to make the crossbow pointless, Gluon gun felt game-breaking.

You should play it.

It’s an amazing game, and it’d make playing Black Mesa a whole lot better.

Dias, when did you play HL?

So, uh, Dias, why exactly do you support this mod then? I mean if you thought the original was crappy, why play the remake?

Dude, 11 years ago that was top notch!

I don’t remember anyone telling me why to do what in Unreal…

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
