Should I Play HL1 First?

Okay so I’m really looking forward to Black Mesa, but I haven’t played HL1 properly. Sooo do you think I should play it first or wait for BM? Because I was wondering that because BM is such a drastic change from the original that I would apreciate it more if I played HL1 first. Or should I not bother and just take BM in all it’s greatness?

Play HL [COLOR=‘Red’]NOW son! :fffuuu:

Definitely play Half-Life first. You’ll realize that it’s an absolutely fantastic game, even though the graphics are so dated. You’ll appreciate BM even more after you play Half-Life.

edit: Damn. Ninja’d.

Play Half-Life first.

You’ll definitely appreciate this more if you play the original.

So i’m getting the vibe I should get and play half life. Well then steaming HL:S tomorrow then, just as soon as I get my new hard drive installed so I have space to play it (damn left 4 dead taking all the space.)

Is it really that good??? Would it be better then hl2?

“Because I was wondering that because BM is such a drastic change from the original”

You have to think it this way: If Valve had the Source Engine already in 1998, the changes would be in a similar drastic way.

But anyway, story and locations are nearly the same as in the original.
The changes are more adjustments to a modern standard.

If you never played HL1 before, you maybe should simply do it anyway, just because to have it played once and to have an idea, how it was implemented in 1998.
But to leave it out would also not being such a big mistake, because BM will fill that gap perfectly.

The decision is simply up to you…

If you don’t mind a graphically dated game then I would say play Half-Life first, it’s fantastic and should be experienced by every gamer. Although if you’re somewhat of a gaming snob (in a bad way) and only play the best of the best (I know people who won’t touch a game if it’s not up to par graphically - sad, I know) then I’d say wait until BM provides an upgraded version of Half-Life.

As far as story goes, it doesn’t matter whether you choose to play HL or BM first. I think I read ages ago that BM will actually add in a few scenarios to make the story more fluent/coherent (or something along those lines, please do correct me if I’m wrong), so you won’t be missing any key story elements by waiting for BM.

Definitely don’t expect the same experience as HL2 if you choose to play HL first, go in with an open mind prepared to experience a classic.

Don’t do Half-Life: Source…go fucking old skewl HL1 :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, play Half-Life 1 first.
Here’s how I played all the Half-Life 1’s.
Half-Life
Half-Life Source
Then Black Mesa.
Anyone who played like this?

They won’t be adding new scenarios.

I’d suggest playing HL first, if only because it makes you appreciate Black Mesa that much more. But then again, when BM come out, I’ll probably never play regular HL1 again, with the exception of comparing the differences.

Awesomeness is only a few clicks and a few dollars away.

Don’t buy the source version. Somewhat buggy, plus you’re not getting the whole retro experience. Plus, you already have access to the Source SDK, so buying the normal, non-source version will give you access to all of the original mods, like the very excellent Poke646, Wanted, etc.

Definitely get the package that JK118 suggested above. For $5 more, you get $15 worth of extra games. Instead of $25 separately it costs $15.

It only takes 8 hours if you are a good shooter. 10-11 if you know what you’re doing, but want to appreciate the game.

And maybe more like 25 if you do it like I did the last time I played, exploring every single area and quicksaving every 15 seconds, quickloading even more often. I think I took less than 50 damage, health wise, that run through. And it was on hard. It was also very painful.

EDIT: THATS WHAT SHE SAID!

Good call.

Yeah, I was talking about hard mode too. I honestly don’t remember how long it took me the first time around, its been awhile. I never actually completed the game, except for a couple weeks ago. Hard, about 10.5 hours. The closest I came before that was the final battle. (No spoilers mkay)

Play Half Life first. Dated graphics or not, you wont regret it.

Wait…Ninja’d by every single poster in this thread :3

.

Play Half-LIfe. Graphics don’t make the game, gameplay does. Not saying Black Mesa won’t be better, graphics enhance gameplay, but even though Half-Life is so dated, I’ll still be showing my kids it when I’m old :stuck_out_tongue: .
