Should I Play HL1 First?

You’re right, I was recalling a quote from the Operation Black Mesa mod, not Black Mesa (Source).

Also, they’re right. If you want to experience the Valve’s Half-Life then don’t play Half-Life Source, go for the original to get the true feel. You have to either take on the original (HL) or go for the complete revamp (BM), don’t go anywhere in between.

Yeah, I’ve played it normally and the way detailed above. The normal, more fun way, with frequent crowbar charges (of course  ) and the painfully slow way.

Me. I’m special. I love me.

I’ll offer a different opinion:

HL1 was great. Amazing game, it changed the way first person shooters are made. Almost every FPS since then has just been emulating HL1, or at least paid homage to it in some way.

But in my opinion, don’t play it. Not at this point. I also don’t care about graphics. I still play commodore 64 games. The problem is the AI. At times enemies will turn to run away, and just stand there…with their backs turned. They do some dumb stuff. With how far shooters have come since then, it just doesn’t compare. If you are a gamer, and play lots of shooters, then i think you will be unimpressed. You might logically be able to think “okay, i see why this WAS great. i see why people love this,” but i don’t think you will have a good gaming experience.

So there’s a devil’s-advocate viewpoint from someone who loves HL1.

In my opinion HL1 is better than 2. Especially for replayability. So HL is definitely worth playing

Get HL1. Play it. Then get any of the dozens of incredible mods for it…
Poke646
Black Ops
POV
Wanted
Sweet Half-Life
Peaces Like Us
Infliction
Deliverance
Redemption
Poke646: Vendetta
Conundrum

Game pays for itself, bscly.

I did that too. Exactly like that.

Well okay then i’ll start looking for the original instead.I think I will apreciate it because graphics are nice but don’t need to be amasing to please me.Thanks Guys!

I never finished hl :s , Not much change from HL except for better water, and actual physics. But I could play HL for the same experience and still have fun. so HL is a good choice.

A lot better

Yeah I remember the days of downloading every single SP half life mod I could find and playing them through, so many hours of gameplay in a single game purchase.

I remember my friends sitting infront of the computer contentratly watching me play Half-Life. Man that game was so much fun.

Half-Life is the best game ever. EVER.

Half-Life still has one of the best AI in a game according to me. I dunno maybe you copy was buggy or you were just unlucky at that time but you missed one of the greatest experiences of Half-Life. If you had played it the way its supposed to be played, you would be joining everyone else suggesting chazzhay to play it. There will always be bugs, but still, it was really epic fighting them.

Note: I am referring to mostly Hl Grunts as the behavior of the aliens can be understood in that regard.

You own Half Life 2? I thought the first Half Life was free to download if you owned Half Life 2? Or am I completely off base wrong?

Nope, if it was then life would be so much easier.

Bull shit! I just got half life 1 in 2009, and I loved the game, didn’t notice any bad Ai (except for when scientist run with their arms straight out in front of 'em.) It’s a great game, get it first!

Opinion is divided on this issue. You can only decide it for yourself personally.

But if you wanna hear my opinion too: No.
Why: Story of HL2 is much deeper and the NPCs in HL1 have simply no emotions (and there is also no attachment to them), while the ones in HL2 have a lot of it. Also I like it to kill enemies by physics, instead of just shooting them.

No, because for all we know you could be a terrorist who wants to put a virus on our steam account, and then when we open it it will explode in a nuke!

Freemanz, you’ve got quite an imagination you know that.

Use it wisely! :freeman:

Of course you should play HL1 before Black Mesa. It will help you appreciate the mod all the more, and Half Life is a very fun game.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
