Should I Play HL1 First?

No, you only really need it to get through the electrified water at the beginning, and maybe one other time to get up an elevator (and maybe not even there, I would have to play through it again). The rest of it can be performed on foot.

Can be performed on foot yes, but is that really an improvement? You’re running around like you’re wearing rollerskates on a ledge not a foot wide.

It’s not a bad level per se, but compared to the other chapters I’m always glad to be at the surface where you have to launch the missile.

Yes, I consider it an improvement when I can skip parts of the level that added to the monotony by making you drive around in circles to get to a part of the level that is just around a corner that you can’t make with the tram.

I gave Half Life 1 a shot a couple years ago (I never played it before) but I honestly couldn’t get passed the first 15-20 minutes, because of the graphics. This isn’t to say I never played a game where the graphics weren’t up to par (I have once in a great while) but I prefer games that are “up to par graphically”. Some people just can’t go back to the simple looking games and I don’t think there’s anything “sad” about that. Because of Black Mesa, I will be able to experience the first game of Half Life and I really appreciate that.

Play HL1 first. Graphics don’t make games ffs. Also agreed with above user.

I know this, thanks. I’ve played quite a few older games. The Tomb Raider classics come to mind. There have been others but not too too many.

I already gave HL1 a shot and I couldn’t get passed the graphics. I’m Sorry but that’s just the way it is. I’m not going to suffer playing a graphically downgraded game when a graphically up to par duplicate is just around the corner… If Black Mesa wasn’t available, I’d give it another shot but there’s is no point.

I totally agree with s1e9a8n5…

I can’t play Super Mario World or Tetris Attack today because they just don’t have the oomph Crysis does in the visual department.

And Minesweeper… Seriously? Can’t someone make it in the Source engine so I can finally play?

[COLOR=‘Red’]Gordon, stop fucking about, or I’ll hurt you.

I understand what s1 means. Super Mario World and Tetris don’t compare, because their graphics aren’t dated. They are 2d and meant to be. 2d games just don’t age as quickly as 3d games do, in my opinion. I just recently played HL1 for the first time, and did struggle a bit with the graphics. It was hard to feel a part of the 3D game environment with the blocky textures, when I’m used to a more-realistic CSS and TF2.

With 2d games, you aren’t supposed to fully ‘feel’ in the game environment. THe whole purpose of 3d games is to have that feeling.

no u.

But seriously, half life does not have “down-graded graphics”. It was revolutionary, both in terms of visuals and gameplay at the time, and it deserves to be played before BMS.

  • Oh btw, ‘s1e9a8n5’, I give you THREE virtual cookies for masterful trolling and/or superior ignorance

For me, there are some older games that I can play and some I just can’t. Perhaps it’s preference to what kind of game it is. Third person over first person, I am not sure. It’s not just the graphics. There is a sense of not connecting to the story and environment because “blocky textures” as Lost put it. The fact that Black Mesa is a graphically up to par duplicate that’s coming out soon is the reason why I am not giving HL1 another shot. I want to be able to experience the first game to it’s fullest potential. I was blown away by Half Life 2+. If I can experience the first game by immersing myself into the world and not have to worry about graphics, I’m going to choose Black Mesa over the original.

I may be new to the forum but I’m most certainly not a troll or ignorant. Is that what you resort to calling someone when they disagree with you here? I find that very immature.

Gordan, do you plan on playing Black Mesa? If so, why bother when you have already played the original?

Half-Life 1 is still one my my favorite games to this day. Honestly, I prefer the original over the HD Pack source version, and I never uttered a single complaint about how it looked.

Graphics aren’t what makes a game good. It’s… stupid at the very least to see people who don’t want to play a game just because it doesn’t look like Crysis.

If you think that way for all games than sure, it is stupid. I agree. At least give the game a shot before shutting it down. Like I said, there are some old games that I can play and some I can’t. It depends on certain things. I gave HL1 a shot but I just wasn’t feeling it. If it wasn’t for Black Mesa, I wouldn’t be able to experience the first game. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Otherwise, if the original is enough for those that have played it, then perhaps they should skip Black Mesa. But don’t criticize those that would like to play Black Mesa because the graphics are better. If Black Mesa and the original both came out in the 90’s and were identical except for the graphics, I guarantee the majority would grab Black Mesa.

While I disagree with your opinion and greatly enjoy the original Half-Life, despite the sub par graphics, you are at least being mature about it, giving actual reasoning. I can understand why you want to wait for BM, but I’d still recommend anyone to play the original Half-Life first.

This.

For s1e9a8n5: You’re telling me that you are prepared to dismiss the games that were released in the 90s because you’re visual pallet cant handle blocky textures? In that case, you are ignoring:

Ultima Underworld
Doom/II
Hexen
Quake/II
Duke 3D
Half Life
System Shock/II
GoldenEye 007
Unreal/Tournament

I could go on, but you get the point. To dismiss the games of this period because of their graphics is quite simply, trolling.

Another thing you fail to consider: while visuals are somewhat important for the immersion of the player, IMO, sound is a massive one too. System Shock, Half Life, and even Quake and DooM had sound effects which really added to the atmosphere. Immersion is not just visual, it is a sexytime of the aural senses too.

In conclusion: Don’t be a graphics whore. If you are, keep it to yourself or be prepared for a shitstorm of biblical proportions.

Even though I think Half-Life is still amazingly immersive for it’s age, and it’s wrong to overlook it, I don’t think you’re hearing S1 out. He’s not saying, “Its not crysis so it suks lol,” he’s saying that since he’s used to better looking games, he can’t get into the game as he might have been able to back in 98’.

Exactly.

I never said “I never have or will play a 90’s game because of the graphics”. Did I? No. What’s wrong with people having a preference for different things? Why must we all have the same mentality as you? I’ve definitely played 90’s games in the 90’s when they were relevant and I loved the majority of them or at least the ones I got to play or those that interested me. Would I like to play some of them again, sure. But the majority of them no. The nostalgia is not there anymore. Some games are good when their played once or a few times. Then you eventually get bored with them and it’s 10 years later totally forgotten. Those games I wouldn’t care to play again.

Ultima is not my kind of game. Doom doesn’t interest me. Never heard of Hexen. I think I tried playing Quake but never got into it and not because of the graphics. I just didn’t care for the story. Story is a big thing for me. I loved Duke Nukem when I was younger. Same with 007 Golden Eye. I played it during high school with friends as well. I’m 23 btw. I think Golden Eye was the best one actually or at least the best one I can remember playing. I could play that again. The newer games have strayed away too far from what worked. Same with the new Tomb Raider games. Have you ever heard of the game “The Lawnmower Man”? I loved that game. I could play that again. Super Mario brothers and those type of games will never get old to me. Now a days, I love a good story that interests me and some games that are just for fun. I’m just picky really.

I think it’s better to just rule out a certain section of games in general, rather than just say, “Well, this game is ugly, and I can’t play it because of that. But this game is ugly, and I can.”

It’s nice to be consistent.

As per playing Half-Life, it resolutely sits in my Top 5 favorite games, Top 3, really, behind Deus Ex (the first one, not that pathetic excuse for a sequel) and before Half-Life 2.
