Should I Play HL1 First?

Honestly, I’ve always just had a personal issue with people who got Half-Life 2 just because of the shiny looks and completely skipped HL1, then proceed to bombard me with questions about the story that are too complex to really put into words. (IE, just about everything the G-Man tells you.)

Not accusing anyone here, though.

I agree.

I’ve known about Half-Life since it came out, which I was 5 at the time. I actually used to play LAN against my dad when he had it, and when I was a bit older (8-10 years old), I played through the single-player.

And like every other Half-Life fan, I was following Half-Life 2 extremely closely, checking gaming news sites practically every day to see if there were any announcements about Half-Life 2. Finally it came out, I bought it, and played it through on a fucking Pentium 3, running about 12 fps on the lowest settings. I didn’t get to play it on the highest settings and on a decent computer until about…a year ago.

A lot of people had never even heard of Half-Life at all until The Orange Box was released for consoles.

And a lot of people seem to think that PC gaming is beneath them or something, because they’ll refuse to buy the original Half-Life, even though it’s extremely cheap, and they like it, because people would rather just be told rather than go through it themselves.

Gordon, last warning: stop accusing people of trolling for simply disagreeing with you. Your opinion, by definition, is not indisputable fact, and if you don’t drop the attitude I will punish you for it.

Also, don’t double post. If you have something to add use the edit button.

No. I’m not sorry. I am always right. Me = infallible truth.

Always.

Yes it is. See above.

That’s the way. Exploit those masterful moderator skills of yours to silence those with different opinions.

no u.

I think you’re predicting the near future with that animation you posted.

Why. I’m playing the HLS (Half-Life: Source) thing and I’m loving it. I’m playing in without the HD Pack and the virtuals are good, graphics good back in good old days, and I’m said this to you. Are you saying Half-Life w/o and w/ the HD Pack, sucks? And skip BMS!!! What!? Are you saying to people that you think people that have played HL1 to not play BM?
To get a life? Well. I will not listening to you. I am going beat to HL1 and every HL game to prepare for BMS.

You said you played games in the 90s with 90s graphics and you enjoyed them, so suddenly your ability to enjoy things requires a higher polygon count? Wtf, that makes no fucking sense.

That’s like saying, oh, they made the new Star Wars films with better CG? Well there’s no fucking way I could enjoy the old movies now.

And lol at mods waving their e-penis’ around, great way to create a community guys. Also why fucking post in red? Make yourself feel important, I’m different so I’m cool?

This is nonsensical. No one is arguing this point, why are you even bringing it up? It’s irrelevant to the discussion. Of course people would have have chosen BMS, but did they have the source engine then?

No, they were running HL on Voodoo2’s and OpenGL. So why even bring this point up if such a scenario couldn’t exist?

Gordon - Call it a hunch, but I predict bad things in your future.

Even though I mostly agree.

What was it Roosevelt said? “Speak softly and carry a big stick”?

But now on topic serious business reply: Everyone play Half-Life 1. :freeman: If you already have, do it again.

I’m predicting a bright future for you here.

You missed his point entirely, I believe. First of all he never said that ‘it sucks’, he said he can’t get over it. The ‘skip BMS’ part was just to argue that the opposite of his opinion could be possible, i.e. not feeling the need to play BM because HL1 was plenty enough for them.
I don’t agree with him either, anyway, but that’s his choice.

This could be compared to some old movie being redone/remastered… Some fans will want to watch the old movie even if a completely new version is being redone, while some others won’t bother with the old one and just wait for the new one to come out.

While I agree that graphics alone don’t make or break a game, I hate when someone calls you a graphics whore just because you also like to have decent graphics. These are VIDEO games not regular board games or outdoor games, there is a definite VISUAL aspect involved.

Graphics alone don’t make or break a game, but they do significantly add to the immersion and atmosphere of a game, preferably combined with great gameplay and narrative.

Anyone who’s on these forums is here because no matter how much we love the original Half-Life, this remake will look a lot better, even though it doesn’t change anything about the gameplay.

Crysis, well, it looks great…but let’s face it, graphics aside this is one generic shooter with the most cliché plot and characters.

Just take some of the best sci-fi movies like Star Wars or the Alien movies, without convincing graphics, the story alone won’t carry the movie. As a book those stories might still be successful, but from movies we expect the visuals to be convincing too.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I did play HL1/Op4/BS and enjoyed them very much. Though I did play HL Source and with HD Pack enabled, it doesn’t change much but the difference is noticeable.

Someone is going to be fucking banned.

To all those inane and infantile dumbfucks who don’t understand who moderator is and what red text means.
In this particular place, a moderator is capable of much more than just writing in red text, mind you.

Gordon I’m so impressed that I might pass my “1st flaming douche on the forums” flag to you, with a light heart. Too bad that you’re not going to last here for long.

While i agree with you that graphics shouldn’t stop anyone from playing a game

Pissing off the mods (or anyone for that matter) ain’t smart. If Ram finds you…well…

Kinda surprised this thread isn’t locked yet.

chazzhay asked the original question of whether or not he should play half life first, and his question was answered with yes.

That really probably should have been the end of the thread.

I agree.

I got Half Life 2 mainly because of the story. I remembering hearing about the game and seeing some screen shots. I was like Aliens take over? AGAIN. The graphics do help but once I actually saw the trailer, game play, and the actual story being told, I loved it. I’m a big fan of 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New Word type of stories. I loved the totalitarian environment.

I heard about Half Life (2) in 2005. That’s when I started seeing a lot of articles and news on it. As for PC gaming, I think Half Life is the best on the PC (there’s just something about the simplicity of it) but some games are better played on a console. And some, both.

Why are people putting words in my mouth? I never told anyone to get a life. I was being sarcastic when I said that.

I never said that either. Some games you beat and your done with. There’s only so many times I can play a game before it gets boring and repetitive, yes? Games like Resident Evil 4, Tomb Raider Underworld, etc. I beat once and I’m done. Once is enough for me for some games. But perhaps that’s because there’s no replay value. I don’t care about “secrets”. If I could play some of those older games again, I would but I’m not going to go out of my way of getting an old console system to do it. Some games are better left alone for what they were.

As for Star Wars. I’m not a fan of the original. But I did see the new ones and I thought they were pretty good. It’s not just the CGI but also the actors and how the story is being told. Story story story. Story is what gets me excited about a game, novel, or movie. I’m also not a fan of Star Trek (I never really saw the appeal for either movies) but I loved the new movie. Does that mean I have to go and watch the old ones to, no. Do I want to, no. Why should I? Just because I like the new movie doesn’t mean I have to watch the old ones now.

Exactly.

Regarding Gordon: I smell FailCrash.

^if it was him, Bean would permaban the fucker no questions asked.

I like to think I haven’t been childish enough to rise to such obvious and ridiculous baiting since I left school a decade ago. And it is rather amusing you’re accusing me of ‘silencing differing opinions’ when that is exactly what you were trying to do and the reason I was warning you.

The red text is to denote official moderation-related warnings, which if ignored will result in infractions (which in turn can lead to temporary or permanent bannings). It is to make them clear and obvious and impossible to miss, and differentiate them from ordinary discussion by mods or other members. While it may be causing you e-penis envy, it has nothing to do with showing off from my perspective, just me carrying out my responsibility to (in this case) protect someone who was being needlessly flamed for expressing their opinion.

And as for this community, you must be right: the problem with it isn’t the persistent trolls, the flamewars, the spam and thread derailment, isn’t the newbies flooding the forum with inane questions covered in the FAQ, isn’t the veteran members who should know better flaming the n00bs to a crisp, and isn’t hypocrites like Gordon throwing the label ‘troll’ around to dismiss others’ opinions, it’s the mods. Obviously. :retard:

And yet, flaming aside, this is still obviously a topic people are interested in debating, and it applies to many more people than the OP. It would be a shame to have to close it, so I’m hoping people can communicate like reasonable adults, despite the evidence to the contrary of the last couple of pages.

^This. Gordon’s not exactly making a favourable impression, but if he’s FailCrash returned once again he’s jumped several IQ points and become a master of e-disguise overnight.

Maybe he moved to another country to be incognito.
