Should I Play HL1 First?

I’m not just talking about IP address, you know. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, this isn’t the place to talk about FailCrash. I was thinking about setting up a poll in Off-Topic to guess how long it is till he reappears under another guise, but I think he’s given up now anyway.

Lol, you didn’t bother checking my IP or MAC address did you?

** wtf is FailCrash?

FailCrash was an idiot who got himself banned twice over under different accounts before I noticed he was the same guy, then kept trying to sign up again under new accounts that I started perma-banning the instant I worked out who it was. Which was quickly because everything in his profile and posting habits pointed at the same guy, every time, even before looking at his IP.

[COLOR=‘Red’]Time to get on topic, guys.

You should play Half-Life 1 first, and even though the graphics aren’t state of the art, it’s the same as Crysis, just a bunch of ones and zeros.

My final word.

I think gamers fall into two (maybe three) categories.

  1. If people feel compelled to play the original and don’t mind the graphics, should do so. This may or may not include playing Black Mesa.

  2. If you don’t care about graphics and you’re fine with playing both, do so.

  3. If you’ve grown accustomed to the up to par graphics that Half Life 2 + has created and would rather play the updated version that’s coming out soon, wait for Black Mesa. If you’re up for it though, try playing the original…

That’s kind of like saying, “I only date good-looking women now, because I can’t go back to dating average-looking women after dating someone good-looking. Sure, someone sexy can be a complete asshole and the woman that is okay looking can have a gorgeous personality, but I’m too shallow to get past personalities, I don’t care how good something it is, because looks are everything.”

Oh, wait.

Why is everyone making comparisons? Comparing dating (personality/looks) to video games is pretty silly. There are after all exceptions to everything. People like and do different things for different reasons. It all comes down to preference. What kind of game you prefer to play. What kind of game you’re into at the time etc.

I remember watching certain movies when I was younger that I wasn’t into but now I enjoy them. I didn’t like the first Matrix movie for whatever reason but when the sequel came out, I fell in love with the trilogy. When the Lord of the Rings movie came out, I didn’t like it. I thought it was boring. But a year ago, I watched all three and I thought they were great. I’m not really into playing sports games, at all. But there was a brief time where I had the urge to play Madden Football and I loved it. I’m not really into playing army/navy type combat games but there was a brief time where I had the urge to buy Call of Duty and I loved it. I actually still haven’t beat it yet and don’t know if I will because I’m just not feeling that type of game right now.

I guess I’m conflicted like that. So I don’t think you can categorize and compare things like this. There are different reasons why people do and like the things they like. It’s not just black and white.

I think the reason some of us are so “definitely must play HL1 first” is because we played it when it came out (or near enough to then), and so when we play it again now we don’t see the graphics as dated so much as an old but familiar friend (or enemy as the case may be).
For people who missed out on that opportunity, to play it when its graphics were cutting edge, to try and play it now does feel odd.
I personally have a foot in both camps - I like a good game regardless of graphics, but I also really like the technology in things like Crysis.
I guess my point is that I can see both sides of the argument but do tend to lean towards the idea of “not playing it just because it looks old means you are missing out on a good game/story etc”, but that is also my own opinion, so feel free to think differently.

You’re so banned

Edit: he was banned :stuck_out_tongue:

Why hasn’t he been banned yet, anyways? It doesn’t usually take this long to invoke the wrath of the mods.

EDIT: Indeed, he has been banned.

I don’t see why people are saying you have to play HL1 before HL2, there aren’t that many references from HL1, it doesn’t really explain the combine at all or even hint at them. We never meet Breen in HL1. Barney, Eli, Kliener and Magnesson aren’t even really characters, just copies of them walking around everywhere.

Having said that I say you should play the the original first… I’ve replayed it 3 times since stumbling onto the existance of (then) BM:S

No one is arguing this.

We are arguing whether or not people should play HL1 before BMS comes out, not HL2.

Oh yeah, and I would like a mod, preferably raw_been, since he has not been answering my PM’s, why was it that I received an infraction for… double-posting of all things, when I’ve only done it once in this thread?

You make a good point Guf. I can relate to that feeling.

Definitely my new sig

and on the topic I played Half-life 1 after HL2 and didn’t mind the graphics at all of course I still play my SNES and don’t mind blocky 3d you have to look past all the dumb graphics have to look amazing crap that people give you and play it for the game and the story.

and yeah I’d say if you want to have the most fun noticing all the things the Dev’s changed around play it through at least once it will be something i don’t think you’ll regret.

All I have to say is: Yes. I’m now going to walk away and never visit this thread again. Good day sir.

Not answering your PMs? Jesus Christ. We’re in very different time zones you know - you sent them both at what was 4-5am for me, and you were answered in less than a day.

I’d recommend wholeheartedly that you play the original HL - if for no other reason than to use as comparison between it and BM. It’ll be your yardstick to see how much more awesome the mod is!

But seriously, it WOULD be interesting for comparison. If there’s a part you didn’t like in the original, you could see how the BM team has improved on it; if there’s an awesome scripted sequence or fight, you could better realize how much more awesome it’ll be in BM. Or you could simply compare the level layouts and see BM’s interpretation on how this level should go.

It’s also a ton of fun, and will give you some of the best nostalgia ever. To this day, if I hear a computer-generated voice, I feel like I’m in Black Mesa ('s why I love going to the airport.) As far as the graphics go, I know they’re not exactly “current,” but I think they have an incredible charm to them. To see the incredible things that this team did with such a - by our standard - primitive engine is just amazing. That could be the nostalgia talking, though.

Well you’ve got my vote.

And with that, this thread completes its fourteenth full circle.

Should I play Half Life first?

btw,

i thought it was;
maybe on previous forum incarnation?

anyway it should be locked, or should have a poll, where everyone could put their voices, and see the resulting opinion,
but not senseless quacking on each other all the time as they do now.

…i think .)

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
