Should I download half-life:source

I have never played half-life. I have waited for this mod for several months now. should I just buy half-life source, play it, then get this mod when it comes out to more thuroghly enjoy what I have already experienced? should I wait, and have this mod be my first half-life experience?

YES play it. your experience will be enhanced when playing BM

What he said :awesome:

ya know…

…speaking of HL: Source v.s. the original HL (never played Source)… Do I want to pay the extra money to buy the Source version, or is playing the original enough?
What kind of changes are there to the original that I may be interested in?
</taking over thread>

I’d definedly say no! Let the BM be the 1st experience.

I’d suggest playing the original before playing the mod. It’ll give you perspective of what Half Life was and will further highlight the work of the devs. If you play the mod first and then go back to the original Half Life, you’ll probably feel :meh:

Which is categorically NOT how you should feel about the original Half Life.

Why are you here if you haven’t played HL? Source or not, don’t talk to me until you’ve played it all the way through.

Well, I already own all the half-life 2 games. does that change your view? is this not a question of should I or shouldn’t I but rather why havn’t you?

I mean, that’s why I’m on this site…I played all the hl2 games, and I want to know how it all started.

You should’ve played HL1 before HL2.

Buy Half-Life, not Half-Life: Source. Half-Life has a more authentic feel and better mods.

The only thing better about HLS is the deathmatch, because you can play maps from other Source games.

No. You should buy it.

Have you heard of Steam? You get stuff by downloading it.

After buying it :stuck_out_tongue:

buy the original HL, finish it, have a look at Half-Life: Source screenshots, then you’ll be back here in no time

Half Life: Source doesn’t really look or play any different than Half Life and they both cost the same on steam. There are only minor differences, like props that are hung from ropes can actually swing a bit and I think that corpses act a bit different, the tranquilizer gun acts like the crossbow from HL2, and water also acts more realistically. There might be other stuff, but nothing really big.

Also, if you’re not on a top end PC you may have to run HL: S on a lower screen size than what you could run the original Half Life on. I personally need to run Source games at he lowest resolution available in order to ensure smooth framerate, but when I run Half Life, I can have things pretty much at my full screen resolution for the entire game and still generally stick up around 30FPS.

The real clincher for why a person should get Half Life instead of HL: S is because HL: S is still a source game and will only give you access to mods that only need the Source SDK Base to run. If you have any game from the HL2 series, then you already have that access.
However the original Half Life runs on the GoldSource engine, and gives you access to all goldsource mods. To give you some perspective, Planetphillip.com lists out practically every single player mod ever made. Out of the 1000 or so mods currently gathered up, nearly half of them are goldsource mods, so you effectively double the mods you can play simply by choosing the original over the source version. There are 10+ years of goldsource games to work through with some serious gems in that mix. I personally have 26 mods for Half Life. Compare that to the 11, 12, and 18 mods that I have for HL2, Ep1, and Ep2 respectively and you’ll get an idea of just how big of a difference GoldSource mods can make to your library.

NO! DO NOT PLAY HALF-LIFE SOURCE!

  1. better experience
  2. no map errors (ex. a room with boxes hanging in the ceiling from the floor by a hundred feet below.)
  3. BMS has better animations.
  4. cinematics are gonna be awesome in BMS
  5. Flaws in HL :s ource is fixed in BMS.

Uhhh
Play HL(S) and then you can truly enjoy BM

But on the flip side, HL:S is actually available.

Play the original Half-Life 1 (with the HD pack pack if you want better models), then play Opposing Force, Blue Shift (unlocked, much better) and if possible, find a friend to play Decay with him/her.
After this, play Half-Life: Source to see the (lack of) difference.
Free stuff:
HD pack and BS: unlocked (requires HL, OpFor and BS)
Decay (requires HL)

Good luck! I hope you have a great experience!

fixed

Fixed.

The funny thing is that HL:S does not give access to the Source SDK.
