Self-Built Computer (1ST)

I have two 6pins hooked up to it, if that is what you mean.

Scratch that. The MSI version doesn’t seem to require 6+2 pin connector.

Never mind, my stupid ass closed out the driver download before it finished the post-installation. So far, it’s been pure sex. Crysis runs at 30+ FPS all the damn time, and my five (5! 2x 80mm 2x 60mm 1x 120mm and a fan the size of my head in mah Cyclone R4890) fans keep my computer at a crisp 37 degrees Centigrade under full load. Motherboard screws wer’nt long enough, so its suspended with plastic ties. Hurrah for jury-rigs, they make me feel like Mal.

$700 too.

To do: Move HDD out of the floppy bay where I foolishly installed it.
Tie loose wires.

That is a very nice case.
I’m gonna put mine(wheneverI get the moneys  ) in a Coolermaster DM690 which is like a giant toaster with silver flourishes but with 7 large fans :stuck_out_tongue:

I have fans.

They like my youtube videos.

nice PC but you should use cable clips. mess of cables doesn’t look good.
btw: I’ll buy some new parts soon too

I actually did that this morning, I ran out of normal cable ties and used twine on some, but it looks a lot neater in there.

Alos, I got my 4890 OCed at 980MHz Gpu clock and 1045 MHz Memory clock. :awesome:
Still less than 40C in there!

Hey guys,
Would like a little advice on what I’ve bought:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 MB
Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit
WD Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache

The purpose is for a gaming rig. My question (Because I’m not really up to date with this kind of thing): What OS should go on it?

DOS obviously.

W7.

Also, IIRC the WD Caviar Green is only 5400 RPM. You may want to consider going with the Caviar Black, because the speed on that guy is 7200 RPM. Sure, nothing compared to solid state, but it’ll decrease your bootup time in games, time to load applications, loading times in games, that kind of thing.

Thanks Level.
I’ve preordered W7 now. There is so much on the net as to go XP vs Vista vs W7. Everybody has an opinion, and they all conflict with each other. Figured I’d go to the Source. The BMSource, that is.

I’m going to leave after that pun…

wait, hope you haven’t ordered yet. You have a 4 gig ram kit there, but i7 uses triple channel. You need a 6 gig ddr3 kit.

The i7 doesn’t use exclusively triple channel. You can use dual channel too. So I don’t NEED a 6gig kit. True, I’m not getting max potential out of it… then again, will I ever?

And yes, I’ve already ordered it - so it’s a bit late, regardless.
But thanks anyway.

While it’s not required to use the triple channel abilities some of the x58 chipset boards use for core i7, it does eliminate one of the VERY few reasons to buy the i7 920, over the i5 750. the only other real reason is the HT ability, which doesn’t really impact most people unless they really stress certain applications.
If you can afford the 5870 power too you, but please tell me you have a high resolution monitor that will fully take advantage of that monstrous GPU power.
Also, I would definitely suggest that you chose windows 7 over windows vista, as most of the problems people complain about with widnows 7 versus windows vista is easy to switch back to windows vista style…Windows XP isn’t something I would suggest to most people these days.

Go with Windows 7 Ultimate if you want to. If not, go with Windows 7 Home Premium. My self-built computer is almost complete. All the parts are finally here:
Heatsink
Soundcard
CPU & Hard Drive
2X Video Cards
Motherboard & Optical Drive
Case
Power Supply
Memory
Total Price: $1,298.82
Building it Wednesday, buying Windows 7 Home Premium Thursday and playing Crysis on it ASAP!
