About motherfucking time the PC got a proper port of this game.
.___. how many times did this game get ported and re-released?
Not enough times imo.
It’s 15GB. Prepare for prerendered cutscenes out the ass instead of just making them real time like the Gamecube versions were.
There goes ultimate then lol. But who really cares about cutscenes, as long as they are of good quality, it doesn’t matter they aren’t real-time. Things like costume change showing up in them is just minor.
All the cutscenes are real-time and Capcom confirmed mouse and keyboard support. The 15gb might be for remastered 1080p60fps cutscenes on Separate Ways.
They look awful, take up space, and like you said don’t show character changes.
What is separate ways? And has Capcom confirmed real time cutscenes?
The steam store trailer and screens show cutscene footage with anti-aliased 1080p and the trailer is 60fps on Steam if you go fullscreen.
Separate Ways was, afaik, additional content added to the PS2 version where you play as Ada in a story parallel to that of Leon.
BTW, I’m sure the cutscenes in this are real-time because the HD release on PS360 also had real-time cutscenes and this PC version seems to be an enhanced version of those ports.
I didn’t notice the 60 fps video before but after clicking on the HD version to the side it seems it is, so that makes me a little more optimistic about that. Still wondering what could cause it to be 15GB though, because it’s definitely not better textures .
The HD PS3 ans Xbox360 versions still had some graphical effects missing from the Gamecube version, so I wonder if that will be the case again… surface reflections especially.
Honestly, I think they just copy pasted the requirements from RE6 and called it a day.
According to a trusted source close to one of the developers handling the port, those effects were super specific to the Gamecube’s hardware and could not be replicated anywhere else.
That sounds like bull* specific to GC hardware, how is that even possible? Thought such thing are dependent on the software part of things as long as the hardware is capable. They wanna tell today’s PCs aren’t able to render them? Trust me, I’m almost positive sooner or later a modder will patch in some cool postprocessing
These old consoles always had some exclusive hardware bound tricks and weird render paths, trust me. There were things the PS2 could do that no other console of the time could.
Sure, those effects could be redone with a more generic type of code, but whoever made the PS2 and PS3/360 ports weren’t able to reproduce them and/or just didn’t bother trying to replicate them in the different hardware.
This PC version is based off the PS3/360 version with some texture and UI enhancements and nothing else of note besides superior image quality (resolution, AA and AF).
NeoGAF is throwing a hissy over the missing effects, which I find odd, since I put a lot more value on higher resolutions, AA and framerate, which is what this version is bringing. Not to mention proper mouse and keyboard support. Hell, you can even disable mouse acceleration.
As far as I’m concerned, this is the definitive version of the game for now.
wish RE5 and 6 matched the greatness of 4
I saw this pop up in the steam announcements and got really really excited. I clicked on it and saw that it was just the first good port and lost interest. If it doesn’t have a retexture or at the very least mod tools so that the modding community can retexture it then it’s just really not worth getting. Had tons of fun playing this game on my PC via a wii emulator with a wiimote.
You guys always expect way too much out of re-releases of old games. Isn’t it enough this being a proper good port of the game for PC? Let’s put this in context: you can’t find digital versions of the original port anywhere and not everyone can be bothered to play the emulated version (nor do they know how to do it). The original port is a fucking mess and needs to be modded in order to be enjoyed, which, again, not everyone can be bothered or knows how to do that.
Capcom finally comes out with a PC version that can be played properly out of the box and all you selfish idiots can think about is how the graphics aren’t improved over the modified versions you guys got? Jesus fucking Christ…
Why do people consider RE4 to be better than RE5? The atmosphere is better, the game is much longer and so on, sure… but gameplay-wise it’s inferior compared to RE5. Not to mention its plot has like 5% relation with the story of the series. It’s essentially a parody about Spain, boosting American ego while degrading Europe portraying it as an undeveloped and inferior place.
The game could be called “Vacation gone wrong aka. facing your paranoia - the video game” and nothing would change.
And how is RE5 any better in that regard? Remember the racism controversy? It wasn’t completely unfounded but still exaggerated.
The gameplay is marginally better. You still can’t move while aiming.
And the plot? When was the last time a RE had a plot that made sense, even when it was directly connected to the long running canon? Even the first game had a non-sensical plot.
If people only played RE games for the plot, there would only be massive disappointment every single time.
Let’s face it, RE4 was the first and last good action based RE game that still had some horror elements. From 5 forward, it was all action all the time with only some maybe creepy or unsettling shit thrown in. It has since become a sci fi action franchise.
I wish Capcom made a complete reboot of the RE franchise for next-gen and started from scratch with a new true survival horror game. But that’s probably asking too much out of those idiots isn’t it?
The very roots of RE canon are well founded in my opinion. It has always been over the top, sure, but at least RE1,2,3 followed a progression of sorts and weren’t alien to each other. Code Veronica kinda went too far and brought a dead guy back and had given him superpowers (still my MOST favorite of all even tho arguably for veterans the best Resident Evil game is the REmake of the original for GC) and Zero (RE0) was similar in that regard.
Still, I wouldn’t call the story bad, I may be in the minority but it is one of the reasons for why I like the series.
But RE6 felt like a filler to me, they brought back old characters for no good reason (Sherry), introduced pointless new characters (Jack aka. papa junior) and nothing major did happen.
It didn’t push forward the general storyline, just like RE4 (which could be argued that it “did” a bit by introducing brain worm parasites and shi* which were central to the plot in later installments)
I think they should go back and look at the best of them all as mentioned, yet the most underrated by Capcom itself, the REmake and merge that with some elements from RE4 as the general foundation for the future.
I know Operation Raccoon City was a complete shitstain of a game but I still think that a Western studio could produce an excellent horror based Resident Evil. Maybe give the guys who made Outlast a crack at it.
