Religious Argument

But in a legal sense… You know, just read my last post.

which is what I was kinda getting at. Depending on what court of law you are in, (local / state / government / country etc.) it could go either way.

Regardless of the details, the work environment is not a place to be elevate or suppress your subordinates based solely on their personal belief system… unless that belief system directly inhibits the person from doing their job.

So, if atheism is considered a religion, do I have to still have to pay taxes?

Another country destroyed under god.

And we`ll brainwash your children!

Wow.

My bad.

Considering our country was founded on religious principals, you can’t really fault us for sticking to them. It did turn us into the most powerful country in the world.

are you trolling because im pretty sure the country was founded on freedom of religion, including the freedom to not practice it

Semi-trolling really. It was founded on Christian values, which I know annoys those people, but those values allow for freedom of Religion. All I’m saying is that you really can’t complain if the country sticks with that tradition. Its gotten us places.

Also, the post I responded to never implied Americans limiting others religions.

The United States wasn’t founded on Christian values. It was founded on the principles of the Enlightenment.

Hahano.

The founders were Christian with an understanding of other religions. The fundamental foundation of their values was Christianity.

Some Atheists just can’t accept that something good came out of religion, which is kinda sad.

That’s not true. Atheists are quite willing to accept that good things can come out of religion. The United States, however, was founded on the principles of the Enlightenment, not Christianity.

The words “Christian”, “God”, or “Jesus” show up nowhere in any of our founding documents. Religion is only mentioned ONCE in the Constitution and that is where government and religion are to stay separate.

Yes, but most of the first batch of immigrants were irish (and christian). Maybe the USA itself wasn’t christian, but a great portion of its population was.

Stop this offtopic bulshit!

looks at the thread title

Oh!.. errr, never mind.

I think that I’m a little late, but I have something different to say.

Your father doesn’t respect your opinion because he thinks it is not a mature opinion. In other words, he doesn’t think you are mature enough for such an important decision. “Brute force” will not help you with this. It might work by making him tired to fight against you, but it will won’t change his opinion about your decision to be imature.

I think you should do as he says. Discuss the book, and really think about you arguments and his. And, above all, don’t ever elevate your voice, keep it low and respectfull. Show that you understand and respect his opinion, but also disagrees. Talk about it like you are talking about sports or something unimportant.

You have to keep in mind that you won’t always have answer for everything. So you need humility, you don’t know everything. Keep it civil, don’t be desperate about showing your own opinion to him.

I think that, with time, your father will respect you and your differences.

no offense but you might want to check the spelling for a few words instead of translating them directly from portuguese

humidity = umidade
humility = humildade

Thanks!

In my defense, I wrote that post in a hurry, I had to go and didn’t have time to spell check it.

EDIT:

That sucks.

I don’t want to sound like sticking my nose into other’s business. Catz suggestion (about using law) is good, but should be used in an extreme case, because, once you do that, people will begin to really dislike you. The biggest problem is the prejudice that some religious people have against atheists (the opposite is also true sometimes), they think you chose atheism to do wrong things without guilt.

For now you should try to get along. You need to show maturity, and also that you can be a good, kind, gentle person, “even though” you are not a religious person. Religious people think they dislike atheists because of their lack of religion, but actually it’s because they associate atheism with badness and indiscipline. You have to show they are wrong. In the end, it all comes to how is your relationship with your boss.

You were mature in trying to avoid this kind of discussion and to gently tell her that “you don’t feel comfortable with this kind of thing”, so I think you have enough maturity to handle this without getting trouble for yourself. I don’t guarantee that this will work, you are free not to follow my advice if you don’t agree with me.

There is a gaping chasm between official motivations and moral motivations. All of the founding fathers had their morals firmly founded in Christianity. As such the country was founded on these values. There is really no denying it. This is not to say that the country is in some way legally religiously oriented, only to say something irrelevant to anything in this thread.

Um, Someonerandm, those “values” you think are Christian are actually human values.
