Religious Argument

to be entirely honest i don’t think you should have said anything. religious beliefs are none of your boss/coworkers business and really aren’t something to be discussed in the workplace

unless of course she was trying to push her beliefs in everyone’s face, as so many christians do.

Same here. Being an active member of any religion at all here will only result in mockery. Except if you’re an old person.

Or a muslim!

Where I live if you’re not a Christian (Baptists seem to be the majority around this part) you’re pretty much an outcast from society. There’s a church every 5-8 miles around here, no joke.

Also, Sassy, yeah, I know you were directing that at me and I know what he meant, but the way he worded what he said was saying “Most athiests on earth” not “Most athiests I know.”

My parents know I’m an athiest, my sister is agnostic, both of my parents are Lutheran, but none of us have gone to church since I was around 3 or 4 years old.

Time to pull out the manual and look up the details on your religious discrimination rights. Last I heard “Atheism” IS recognized as a religion and her continuously bringing up the subject is what could be considered encouraging a hostile environment.

It would be difficult to prove in a court of law, but I am sure a clearly stated memo of your preferences to her inbox will help her get the picture.

The UK’s laws about this sort of thing may be different than our laws in the US are, though.

yeah, I think that is a probability. Still… no one should be beat up or ridiculed for their religion. Regardless of how wrong she is. :stuck_out_tongue:

JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING!!! HAHAHA!

Depends on how you define religion. I define it as a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, and atheists have a belief concerning that (there isn’t a God)

And its not that they dont believe in anything, they just dont believe in a God, which in itself is a set of beliefs they live by when it comes to things like the creation of the world.

Googling it shows most people agree with that, but there are still plenty of debates on that matter out there
I guess if a dictionary defines it as a belief in a deity then you’re right

Just for a quick interesting read though:

Just throwing this in here to maybe cause some rage, idk

The real question here is Does it matter?

oh that’s creepy as hell.

but yeah lack of religion = religion o ok

The way I see it, conflating atheism and religion shows that belief in a deity and not believing in a deity are both equally as valid. It’s kind of like saying that believing that man walked on the moon and believing that the moon is made of cheese. They’re not.

I don’t mind that people believe in a god, but to try to say that I believe there is no god is just not true.

Belief =|= Disbelief, basically.

So, atheism is not a religion. It is anti-religion, if anything.

Just because the majority of people on earth (who, by the way, happen to be religious and therefore not know shit about atheism) define atheism as a religion, it doesn’t make it right. In fact, it just confirms the atheist opinion that religious people are usually wrong about almost everything.

Closer to irreligion, actually. Anti-religion would be to be against it.

Although, for the sake of legal ease, it should be considered a religion.

That is actually significant, now that I think about it. If we don’t consider it a religion, it would be possible to lose the right to practice it according to some constitutions.

But there’s nothing to practice! It’s not like we all gather every Sunday morning to bash religion.

As other’s have said, atheism is not a religion, but the lack thereof, but in a legal sense, it should be considered a religion so that it receives equal rights to true religions.

rofl the church of atheism bashing religion since the dawn of men

Atheism shouldn’t be considered a religion. Atheists don’t need any special religious rights, because they’re not a real group.
Atheism shouldn’t even be a thing. It’s just the absence of a thing.
