PC won't start

So, my buddy and i were going on the computer, but at the BIOS loading screen(energy logo, where it says press DEL to enter setup). It usually shows a list of video memory, CPU and stuff, but now it only freeze at the CPU name. No matter what keyboard i connect, nothing happens when i press a button.

Anyone know a way to fix this ? :slight_smile:

something is probably damaged and the mainboard hangs when it tries to initialize it.
maybe the CPU died?

But since it shows the name of the CPU, and the computer starts, i don’t think so

just reset the bios, maybe it helps
btw, what did the bios display after the CPU name?

reset the bios. if that doesn’t work, try to change the ram sticks.

^this

also, unplug everything that is not essential.

How do i reset the BIOS?

EDIT: And as i said, the keyboard does nothing. So i can’t press del to enter setup, or interact with the computer at all

The only thing it says is the CPU name, and at the bottom of the screen it says Press DEL to enter setup and © nForce 1984-2003

pro tip: setup = BIOS

enter BIOS/setup and you should find a “reset” option there somewhere.
removing the BIOS battery on the MB should also work. Some MBs even have a reset BIOS switch or jumper on them.

[edit] if you can’t enter bios and removing the battery doesn’t help, you’re seriously fucked.

So, i’ll just remove and reinsert the battery, and it is resetted ?

most mainboards have a jumper
and I don’t think he can get into the bios if it hangs before anything is initialized
EDIT: @jerry: exactly

Clear the CMOS then restart. This ‘hang’ is often caused by an overlock-gone-wrong. All you have to do is clear the CMOS, restart and enter the BIOS and lower the voltages and/or clockfrequency’s if you’ve overclocked anything.

If you didn’t overclock then I suggest you switch memory sticks which has been said a few posts above.

edit:

If you have a RAID array, make sure to rebuild it afterwards or your computer won’t recognize the operating system.

Okay, ill have to try this when i am at my buddy’s house. I’ll let you guys know if it works :wink: also, no overclocking and no RAID

Could be the HDD as well, the BIOS screen autodetects any SATA/IDE devices around that point.

No, it hangs at the screen before it displays info of the hard drives in the computer.

Before removing the battery try looking for the CMOS jumper.

It looks like this: https://www.nordichardware.com/skrivelser_img/432/cmos.jpg

Pull out the power cord so that the motherboard is without power and move the jumper for at least 10 seconds, then move it back and try to start the computer again.

“Moving the jumper” means this:

[COLOR=‘red’][
[COLOR=‘Red’]]. -> .[COLOR=‘red’][
[COLOR=‘Red’]]

(wait 10 seconds)

.[COLOR=‘red’][
[COLOR=‘Red’]] -> [COLOR=‘red’][
[COLOR=‘Red’]].

(Move cap from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3, wait, then move cap back to pins 1 and 2. Note: Your jumper might be a different color and it’s in a different location on each motherboard; check the mobo’s manual for its location.)

It’s worked for me.

Okay, ill keep that in mind :wink:

Yeah, the jumper’s a good way to go. I’ve fixed several computers with a BIOS reset, and my own once when I accidentally flipped a jumper off while installing a graphics card.

i had that same problem,

turned out my bios didnt support USB keyboards, if i was you (and if you havent tried this already) I’d try using a PS/2 keyboard

so this is supposed to explain why the ret of the system won’t boot?

if it was a keyboard detection issue POST would list it
