Nintendo 3DS

it needs 4 cameras so you can take 3d photos in both directions. maybe more.

Hopefully they will FINALLY upgrade the hardware or something instead of milking the same damn hardware with small added gimmicks over and over again.

Kotaku thinks thisis the 3DS screen. 3.4 inches, 854 x 480. If this is correct there will need to be new hardware to render at the higher resolution. There also appear to be 2 cameras for 3d video.

3DS is coming out in 6 months, apparently. October 2010. I’m probably going to get one - I don’t have a DS but I’ve always wanted to use Korg DS-10, so its a good excuse. Stereoscopy FTW!

Double post op self bump.

Also I’m slightly impressed with the screen resolution, but I doubt the graphics will be amazing, I’ll be surprised if they are even close to the PSP2 graphics.

Wasn’t it confirmed earlier in this thread that PSP2 is an unconfirmed rumor and any discussion of it’s “amazing graphics” is based on nothing but fanboiism and wishful thinking?

If 3DS is graphically equivalent to a 3d Gamecube, it’s going to be mind-blowing - Mario Kart in stereoscopic 3d, anyone?

Gamecube was powered by ATI Rage, hardly a decent competitor in 2010+, I will be disappointed if the graphics are that low.

im sure you will be - however, the DS is still the top selling video game system by far in 2010, and it uses the equivalent of N64 hardware. The fact is, you don’t need a supercomputer to render good graphics on a tiny handheld screen.

bump for E3 vids, supposedly the 3d effect is pretty rad in person. The screen resolution is roughly the same as original DS, but the graphics quality looks like gen-1 PS2 level.

Pretty nice.

Won’t know about the 3d effects till I see it myself, however it does already look like its got a good line up of games already!

I’d say more PSP-esque graphics, maybe even slightly worse.

Yes but it has twice the graphics of the PsP.
Cwatididthar?

combined resolution of the 2 screens is probably about the same as a psp.

According to Wikipedia the 3ds top screen alone has a higher resolution.

I’d describe PSP graphics in exactly the same way, gen-1 PS2 quality. But the 3ds looks to my untrained eye to support higher texture resolution/color depth than the PSP does. I wouldn’t be surprised if 2nd and 3rd gen 3DS games approach Gamecube quality.

There are some incredibly good looking PSP games, I’d say beyond 1st generation of PS2, easily.

Also, it’s interesting about the screen resolution, I didn’t expect it to be that high :3
.

The top screen resolution is 800x240, or 400x240 per eye, which isn’t impressive at all IMO. The glasses-free tech sounds cool though, but to me is more of a gimmick than something I’d require in gaming on the go, especially taking into account the extra hardware requirements necessary to render two images, one to each eye.

EDIT: PSP has a 480 x 272px resolution, so technically, it has a higher-res screen than that of the 3DS.

I wouldn’t call it a gimmick until I had used it. From the fact that they need twice the res to display I would say although it looks worse in screen shots that this is way more powerful then the psp. Also the games probably look significantly better in 3D.

Considering that the PSP came out 6 years ago, this better be more powerful.

And while Sony obviously hasn’t confirmed a PSP2, many developers are citing extreme hardware capabilities (a simple google search should turn up a few credible articles, albeit a bit dated)

Really? I honestly think it looks notably better than first gen PS2.

^alright alright, that ones just spheres with bump mapping. But it’s nice looking bump mapping!

I would place it closer to Wii.
