Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo has announced its newest portable hardware, the Nintendo 3DS.
The platform will allow users to play 3D games without the need for special glasses.

Discuss.

I’m hoping it won’t force it on us, like a gimmick.

Oh yeah, first.

I’ll wait till I actually see the device.

I didn’t know phones in japan still had screens, I thought they were already hard wired to the brain.

I already have a DS Lite, thank you very much.
Unless I see a Phoenix Wright/Zelda game exclusive to the 3DS, I say “no.”

First the DS. Then the DS light. THEN the DSI. THEN the DSI:XL. NOW THE FUCKING 3DS. NINTENDO GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND STOP RELEASING A BIGGER AND BETTER HAND HELD. JESUS.

We’ll see if the backward compatibility doesn’t hold back the platform’s specs. At least we know it’s ARM/ARM, and very probably dual screen, but they had better buff up the hardware.
As for the 3D, I’m trusting Nintendo to design something that works solidly. I’m quite curious to see how it works (hopefully it’s not just stereoscopic tracking with cameras).

And as for the games, I’m trusting third party developers to waste the console’s potential again. Yay for 3D ponies and 3D tired ol’ manga-style children. :U

Nikkei reports that Nintendo “plans to give the new system a 3-D joystick and a force feedback mechanism that will let players feel the collisions of a game character.”

The Nikkei also feels comfortable enough reporting that the 3DS will feature improved wireless communication speed and battery life, but that its dual screens will be slightly smaller than that of the Nintendo DSi XL, due in North America on March 28.

The Japanese news outlet also says Nintendo is “considering” adding an accelerometer for tilt-controlled games. We’ve heard similar reports before about motion-sensing controls.

Tilt + 3d screen + camera head tracking = win. Now if only they’d drop the bullshit dual screen gimmick and just make it one big screen. Oh yeah and thumbsticks.

Looks sweet!

Handheld isn’t handheld anymore.

I agree, it used to be like this :stuck_out_tongue: :

Nintendo has confirmed that it is not a spin-off like the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. Thank god. :hmph: I hope they make gamecube remakes on this thing. I don’t quite care for the 3D aspect, but I can’t wait to see the new hardware on this thing. Let’s hope it can do almost Wii level graphics. If this has 2 josticks as well I will :jizz:.

Enjoy your broken hopes and dreams when this thing comes out with normal DS graphics.

I will buy a nintendo handheld when they drop the ridiculous multi screen approach, it never appealed to me.

:meh: What the fuck is the big deal with 3D? Its not that cool but people shit bricks for it. i mean its cool once or twice…

Yeah O know, and now everyone jizzes and makes movies in 3d

The only movie worth watching in 3D is going to be TRON 2.

:fffuuu: But seriously, do you really think they would go this far and not add better graphics? It would need better hardware to pull off a 3D effect in the first place. Previous rumors of a new DS, pointing to around the same time of announcement, have indicated it using an Nvidia Tegra 2. https://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/10/13/nvidia-tegra-wins-contract-for-next-gen-nintendo-ds.aspx

If this is the case, we can expect great graphical enhancements, allowing the “3DS” to render Wii levels of graphics (or better). A portable version of Unreal Engine 3 has been developed and showcased that could be played on an iPhone. This article showcases a screenshot of this engine in use on an iPhone, and later describes a demo that isn’t shown, that is played on 3 times the screen size of the iPhone and is powered by Nvidia Tegra 2. https://kotaku.com/5444554/hands+on-with-unreal-engine-on-the-iphone-nvidia-tegra

If the new DS does use this new tech, which seems very likely considering the 3D gimmick would require new hardware, then we can expect Wii levels of graphics at least. This is because the Nvidia Tegra 2 ship inside the 3DS was said to render the same scene, 3 times the size, with no hiccups. Meaning, on smaller screens, like the 3DS’, more graphicly detailed environments could be rendered then were shown. I think we can safely assume standard resolution, Gamecube graphics (at least) will be possible with this new hardware.

Wii graphics sounds like a bit much. GBA was more or less SNES graphics, & DS was similar to the n64, so this thing might have Gamecube Graphics at the very best.

Wii graphics = gamecube graphics, as far as the hardware goes. Of course, if you only have to render 256x192x2 with that hardware, its not out of the question you could do some nifty things with the extra cpu cycles.

Amirite?
