Also, the death of Eli was mainly a blow to the morale. Human rebellion has lost a very influential person. I also believe that Eli was just a secondary target, and the primary target was Gordon Freeman. However, the advisers killed Eli first simply because he was the closest. They were then about to kill Gordon, after which Alyx, but Dog has came in to rescue the two.
Also, the main reason behind Eli’s death is that Valve wanted to add the touch of risk into the game. You know, one of the main character’s death seems completely pointless as the gap usually needs filling. Valve did that so that a seemingly pointless thing would convince you that everything is at stake. Not just you, not just Alyx’s body ( ._.), but everyone may suffer. 
Speaking of Eli’s death, can anyone make a guess who will lead the resistance now?
I don’t think the C17 Resistance (or any other resistance groups) ever had a single main leader, Eli was just a influential character in the group because of his previous experience in Black Mesa
The resistance still have other people in charge such as Barney, Kleiner, Gordon, Magnusson, Colonel Odessa, Judith, hell they could even rely on the vortigaunts

You can basically call the resistance a terrorist group. They’re just a bunch of people wanting to take back the world. They don’t really have a single leader and Eli was just a respected member of the resistance because he actually knew what Black Mesa Incident was about and he survived it. Also, it would seem that Kleiner is more of a leader in the resistance as he is the one giving all the messages to people to have sex and ordering around and stuffs .
Eli’s more important than Mossman or Barney, or at least Kleiner seems to think so. “Now, Eli, the only thing worse than Judith falling into their hands would be if they should get a hold of you! She may know the particulars of the Borealis, but you… you know everything about the resistance!”
I don’t want to believe it… it’s just all so… so… underwhelming.

Not upset really, just disappointed. The pictures just range from ok to bad or just plain confusing.
It’s not because the mods said so, but the pictures were on Andrea Wicklund’s Picasa portfolio. (Although I don’t get why that info was ever withheld)
This is true. I suppose I was thinking why they chose to attack immediately after the super portal went down, as opposed to another time. But as you say, perhaps the Resistance got overconfident after they smashed the Striders and let their guard down for the Advisors to do a final desperate attack. I like the idea of the G-Man manipulating them in response to Eli talking to Gordon about him, though.
Also, about the pictures, keep in mind this is just a few from one concept artist in 2008. They’ve probably changed things quite a bit since then - it might not even be recognisable.

From the sounds of it, they don’t like Kleiner leading the resistance. For obvious reasons nobody likes Magnusson, Alyx will be unhinged so she is less likely to be a candidate. If he is alive, then perhaps Barney; he has probably had a lot more experience in the field then Alyx, and has experience in both covert and overt tactics. He has already led a lot of resistance fighters during the City 17 uprising.
Then again, there my be another character that we yet have to see, who might take Eli’s place.
Given how old the screens are, its about as exciting as say the Allies finding an Enigma Encoding Machine that is four years obsolete.
I’ll be excited when they announce it and/or show gameplay.
If George RR Martin wrote the script, then:
Eli is the leader of the resistance, when he died the title went down to his heir; Alyx
Barney , Gordon & Kleiner went with her, but Magnusson gathers his own supporters and assaulted Resistance controlled C17.
Gordon is leading the defense, but is outnumbered by Magnusson’s forces, Colonel Odessa came with backup and Gordon let him in, but he actually supports Magnusson so he killed Gordon and sacked the city.
Then someone founds out that Eli have a bastard son; Alex, and most of Alyx’s forces went to support him instead
Alyx escaped, with no forces, she married a combine advisor to get its army, Barney became her sworn bodyguard
The advisor later died, its army disperses and Alyx gave birth to 3 Alien Controllers
