there’s a bit of a difference between losing hope and patience.
Absolutely. It just made me realize that it would be much more enjoyable if it was released when I least expected it.
Hey! Duke Nukem Forever is finally out! You can download it now!
Is that the sort of “least expected” that you were meaning?
ps. It’s not really out.
always bet on duke
Is Gordon Freeman here to kick ass and chew bubble gum? NO!
Rowdy Roddy Freeman
As so that’s why he doesn’t speak, he’s too busy chewing gum
That actually makes sense…and would make a good plot device if they made a movie which I’m hoping never happens
I think its fair to say it’ll either be right before Christmas as a present…or December 31st at 11:59 pm just to screw with us and keep to their deal, either way, I’ll be drinking
I don’t understand, I thought you were game developers.
It was a deal the moment you, as a team, were confident enough to put it in an official trailer.
You may not like it, but its the truth nonetheless. I for one will be saddened if that deal is broken, as will everyone here. Some may be angry. It is a predictable response for a human being, and the team must be prepared for heckling and tomato throwing (internet style) if it so happens that you need a little more time to finish.
It may be a selfish and immature response, but you reap what you sow.
Those here that are not bothered by the concept are in the minority. Those who will understand and think critically about your decision, if it needs to be made, will be similarly rare.
I’m sure you understand this.
Of course, none of this really matters because it is not the devs responsibility to pander to the fans. No matter the level of discontent by the community, the game will still appease countless people upon release and the devs will be honored accordingly.
So Ram (and other devs who poast here), don’t feel that its your responsibility to soften us up to that our reaction is less severe. I’ve seen you guys do it countless times now, whether it be letting it slip that coop would not make it into the inital release several months ago, or doing what you just did there, which is attempting to dismiss the inevitable conclusion of thousands of people if you happen to fail to live up to ‘the deal’.
A negative reaction will happen if you do not release in 2009, and all you can do about is not care, which is, in fact, the proper response.
At the end of the day there was never a “promise” about a release date. All the devs are working for zero money spending hours(days/weeks and years) creating somthing for which they will recieve zero financial reward. How many board members here would be prepared to give up so much of their personal time to do somthing like this?
I for one don’t care if the release comes tommorow/next month or if this is not possible then next year. I would much much rather see a fully polished, fully functional black mesa next year than a half finished and under optimised edition tommorow.
Keep up the good work team and I look forward to whatever date the mod is ready!
ur so funneh bro
OK, everyone knows they aren’t making any money for this. It’s the official response to anyone who makes an observation or criticism in any way however small toward the developers from the type of ass-kissing board member who for whatever reason feels the need to say that over and over. There will always be this guy, waving his pointer finger. “How many board members would be prepared to give up their time for this?” If you look a bit more closely they’re not giving up their time.
You see, if I understand correctly Valve gave them permission to create this mod as long as there is no profit. But if this turns out to be a good game which I’m sure it will be considering the original Half-Life is great, and they already have their idea, levels, everything laid out for them. So anyway if this is really impressive Valve will take a serious interest in them. A big job in the video game field? That would be a cool way to make a living. Honestly I think it’s a brilliant idea, and yes I think they will receive some type of financial reward. If not with Valve then with some other company.
And if for some strange reason the game sucks, then at the very least they are doing something constructive and artistic in their spare time. Even if it is a recreation.
Now let me ask you what kind of time would you be giving up? Watching TV? Reading these forums? In answer to your question I would work on this if I came up with the idea. But I couldn’t hop aboard now when I have no experience. And yes we know it is incomplete, they told you that. They came out and said, look we’re not going to release an incomplete game. And I’m sure that everyone knows. That’s another one that people keep saying.
It’s just that there are some people here that have been waiting a long time, years, who are anxious for it because they’re excited about it, I mean I am and I just found out about it a couple weeks ago. So they may say something like “We’re upset that you didn’t meet the deadline”, but they’re just saying what they feel. Yes there was no promise really but they did release a trailer which thousands of people saw that said 2009 in big letters with a bang. And if the developers can’t handle any criticism then maybe they shouldn’t have messageboards.
I’m sorry man if I sound like one of those typical internet dickheads but I’m sick of seeing posts that are being made to solely kiss someones ass when it comes to something like this. Whether it be mods, music, whatever. Please don’t take any offense to this.
You don’t seem to understand the time and commitment it takes to remake an entire game from scratch, do you?
Aside from the fact that they’re making almost every single thing in the game from scratch, apart from one or two models (which is a fucking massive point when you consider how big the game is), they’re not just ‘copying’ HL1. They have to remodel each and every chapter so that it looks more realistic or makes more sense. Rooms will be bigger, there will be more detail in pipes, computers, rubble. Hell, just look through the screenshots.
Considering that this has been going on for six years, and considering how much time the devs spend in the SDK (as you can see in their steam profiles) this takes a fucking lot out of their personal time and their jobs, not just ‘watching TV’.
I don’t understand. What’s your point? No I have no idea. It must be a lot. Good job.
I wasn’t directing that towards them I was directing it toward the poster before me, whatever I really don’t care man. No I did not say they were copying it.
Actually, Black Mesa is set to be released when it’s finished. They’d just like it to be released before the end of 2009.
EDIT - oops looks like Autopager wasn’t working there. I thought I was at the bottom of the thread… that’s what happens when you rely on technology…
Clap clap clap
This is why I don’t post on forums. I always seem to stir up something. I’ll be going now.
thanks for playing.
Yeah, you better run!
