Machine gun (mp5)

You can burst with the MP5 effectively. 3 to 4 well-aimed bursts to the head at medium range will grant you a kill. 2 bursts if you’re good at compensating for the recoil, which, by the way, isn’t that hard to do. This is on Hard difficulty.

I don’t get why people feel like it’s underpowered. I use it as a very useful all-around weapon plenty of the time. If anything, I feel like the ORIGINAL MP5 was underpowered. I always used THAT as a last resort.

Of course at longer ranges there is no reason to use the MP5 at all. Use the Magnum instead. But close to mid, MP5 works perfectly well.

…because Black Mesa isn’t based on real life but on a sci-fi game called Half-Life?! In HL1 the assaultrifle could be any full-auto SMG or rifle… That’s not the point. The point is that you can shoot full-auto on almost any distance for a good amount of time without having to reload. Look at other games from that time… In doom or quake you NEVER had to reload and guns had almost no recoil… lol even if you look at CoD… a “modern” shooter… assaultrifles don’t have much recoil… Half-Life is about aiming precisely while moving at high speed. Not about controlling your spray (it’s not Counter-Strike!!).
In Half-Life it was always like that. Your 9mmar was a good gun for all-around use… but the damage of 9mm bullets wasn’t extremely high… So when I use it in multiplayer I rather use it for finishing my enemies off (when they are on low HP) or I spam my 50 bullets to their heads (on any distance) .

I am not a kid… And “sniping” was possible in Half-Life. With smooth aim and movement the 9mmar can hit on any distance.

yeah the burst is a bit annoying ONLY because its forced , also i thought it would be cool to get the original Black mesa source mp5 with the holo sight … idk i just liked that design better anyone know how to import that …( i already tried replacing the material and model files the mp5 just disappears )

FYI, you can get the MP5 to be automatic if you get down to 2 bullets in your clip, and then fire them instead of reloading. When it auto-reloads, the MP5 will fire in automatic mode for the entire remaining magazine.

Speaking of which, it’s still just as possible in Black Mesa. I just played through Surface Tension again. Using the MP5, I was able to “snipe” HGrunts from the dead Security Guard to the dam, with well-aimed bursts.

On Hard.

I’ve seen a couple of people saying that BM’s Mp5 “Doesn’t work like a real gun”.

…Doesn’t the real Mp5 have a fire selector with burst fire? Gordon just doesn’t know enough about guns to locate it.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but that is an absurd solution. Furthermore, how do you suggest that you get down to 2 rounds in a clip, when it holds 30 rounds and fires in three shot bursts?

Certain models do. This one does not. Look at the worldmodel… This MP5 uses a 3-option “S-E-F” trigger group (S = Sicher /Safe, E = Einzelfeuer /Semiautomatic, F = Feuerstoß /Full Automatic), which, combined with the retractable stock, makes it a full-auto non-burst MP5A3.

Personally I like the 3-round burst. It’s very useful in timing when enemies die (eg, HGrunts invariably die after 3-5 well-aimed bursts at midrange).

Fire full auto until you have (2+3x) bullets remaining.

The mp5 in the original Half-Life is weaker than the glock, and less accurate. On Normal difficulty, a headcrab was killed with two shots from the glock, but three from the mp5 - and good luck landing your first three shots if the headcrab was anything more than about ten feet away. As in Black Mesa, it had a specific role, and that role was mid-range combat - it was never meant to “replace” the glock. At least in Black Mesa, its bullets are just as powerful as the glock’s.

They tried this, but it was obnoxious from a gameplay perspective, so they cut it.

This. In Half-Life, I always used to pull out the mp5 when alien controllers were getting a little bit too close for comfort - too far for the shotgun to be effective, but close enough that I don’t want to risk missing with my magnum or crossbow, because it would give them a chance to launch a bunch of energy balls right into my face, and possibly get off one of those powerful homing ones. A few seconds of full-auto, and they go right down.

Honestly, I found it really useful. My preferred tactic is to cause chaos among the grunts with explosives or the environments, then sprint around in and out of cover while picking them off, which I found the MP5 to be perfect for.

How to use the MP5

Notice how using it at long range is almost pointless. Medium range works fine, just use bursts.

Nevermind…
This thread still isn’t about how to use the mp5 or tactics. But whatever, I don’t think it’s worth fighting to keep those discussions out of this thread.

Well it’s kinda turned into that. :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess point is, 3-round burst may be annoying, but it’s something you can easily adapt to.

The point is that it’s not something I want to adapt to, nor do I can I think of a compelling reason for why I should have to.

If you want single-shot, use the Glock.

It has just about equal damage and is more accurate to boot.

Sure, or I can politely request that the developers implement a, presumably, simple alternative.

You can do that too.

Unfortunately for you, I doubt they’d actually do anything about it.

Certainly not with that attitude.

look, if you want to fire a burst hold down the trigger, but for those of us who either…

a. don’t want to burn through way more rounds than should be necessary have to or…

b. have the minor talent required to hold a controlled burst, but don’t necessary wish to do so all the time, subsequently rapid tapping, which is a necessary skill for any modern shooter is impossible with the forced burst and all in all forced burst seems laggy.

I mean its ridiculous, were not asking for the devs to add realistic fire selections (which would be awesome if they did, but you know, not gonna happen), just allow players to play how ever they want, and if they need to fire in bursts they can, but the trigger pull should only spray what the player intends, thats more a common courtesy than anything else.

MP5… the story of Black Mesa, is it?

Quite a few versions of the MP5 have a 1-3-F trigger group. The soldiers just set their to 3 round burst fire, as a compromise between the firepower offered by full auto, and controllability of semi auto. Whenever you fire a longer burst, Gordon just presses the trigger multiple times. There, happy with this half-arsed explanation? Now stop crying about the MP5.

UMP’s better anyway.
