The statement “Black Mesa will only play on a pc” is wrong, and the total percentage of mac vs. PC players has no relevance whatsoever to this fact.
Furthermore, installing Windows on a Mac is easy, in fact its been a “feature” of Mac OS since 10.5. Pretty much everyone who’s bought a mac in the past couple of years does it. I installed TF2 on my macbook when it first came out.
“Crossover Games” is a non-free application that lets you install and run some games at decent speeds. Some of these games are Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2 & Both episodes, and some other games. Basically if it can run the latest source games, chances are Black Mesa Source will work on both Linux & Mac platforms. Only time will tell, though.
Surely installing windows on one is throwing away half of the reason most people get a Mac? It’s just a nicely packaged bit of hardware then, not that different to a windows running PC Sure, you can dualboot, But it’s spitting in the face of OSX. The point is, Macs vs. PC’s, the Mac(including OS) will loose at gaming everytime, it’s performance is simply not as good.
It’s exactly like the 360 and the PS3, earlier on in life, EVERYONE coded their games on 360, then ported to PS3. Because the 360 version was more popular, but mainly, it was far easier to code for. If you say “NO, I can dualboot my Mac”, well, your not really using the parts that make the mac what it is, are you.

Well, when it all comes down to which OS is better … they’re all great. Linux distributions are good for office tasks, browsing the web and general security. They’re usually free and almost always easy to use. On the other hand, Mac OS-X and Windows Vista/7/XP are close together in terms of which one is better.
Why? They both serve a different purpose. Mac’s are designed to create movies, edit photos, and the general crap related to media/art/whatever. There’s a wide variety of available programs for Mac OS-X and in general it’s clean, secure and an outstanding operating system.
Then we have Windows. Microsoft’s little ‘baby’ that’s being used by a great amount of people worldwide. But honestly, if you want to play games and browse the web while getting tons of viruses, go ahead. But windows is only good for gaming when you think about it. And now, as time goes by Microsoft is continuously increasing their hardware requirements. Look at vista and the impact it’s had on the computer/hardware market. Ram’s at least 50$ cheaper than it used to be, simply because of the increase of popularity due to people upgrading their computers to be “Vista Compatible”. Windows 7 isn’t bad, it’s not good either … but it gets the job done nicely. It’s a bare improvement over Windows Vista, but it still has it’s problems.
So in the end, I really do think that Mac OS-X is the best choice when it comes to operating systems. Linux distributions in second, and Windows in last place. It all depends on what you plan to do with your computer.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against OSX as an operating system, I use it at uni. But like you say, gaming isn’t in its box of tricks. Personally, I’m going to stick with Windows for my next OS. W7 is a hugely refined version of Vista, and actually should have far lower system requirements.

The beginning of this post sounded like those Mac VS PC commersials . Mac OSX and Linux both have viruses, just that Windows has more because it’s more used. And if you want to pretty mush avoid getting viruses while on the internet on Windows you can use Firefox with Adblock and NoScript.
And Windows has a bunch of video editing and image editing programs as well.
When I get my own computer I’ll probably duel-boot Windows and Linux. Though If I have a bunch of money I’ll get a Mac as well :freeman: .
Sure, both Linux and Mac have viruses, but the chances of getting those viruses along with the level of severity of those viruses is drastically different compared to those you can ‘catch’ while using Windows.
Errr, all you have to do is not to open picture enging with a .exe extension than a mysterious stranger sends you and you don’t get viruses you know. I run a monthly scan with AVG Free and I always have zero infections.
If you use common sense a bit you’ll never get viruses. The weakest part in a OS’ security has and will always be the human being.
First of all, in my opinion as a pirater, porn browser/downloader , and pc/windows user, the idea that pcs are completely laden with viruses, IS ENTIRELY FALSE (I am only talking about viruses that will noticeable affect your computer). The only way to ever get a bad virus (in my experiences) is to do something really stupid. If you want to pirate something, go to tpb and find something with good comments, if you want to watch porn, go to pornhub.com and use something like Mozilla download helper to dl the videos, and if you see something that shows a picture of a loading bar and says it’s scanning your pc and finding hundreds of viruses, then don’t be a dumbass and click on it. I use AVG FREE as my anti virus and haven’t had any problems.
Macs and PC DO NOT SERVE A DIFFERENT PURPOSE, mac is stabler but EXTREMELY nuetured in capabilities and options. As I said in an earlier post, give me a solid non-abstract reason that macs are better for artistic things. You even have to pay for imovie when Windows Movie Maker is free.
The ONLY time I could ever understand why a mac would be better for you is if you are more clueless about computers than a caveman and have such horrible learning capabilities or electronic-phobia that you are too afraid to learn how to use a pc properly.
When I look at a mac I think, what on Earth can I do with this thing? And just about the only thing I can come up with is playing flash games and browsing the internet.
BTW, I lol’d at you saying that ram was $50 cheaper, you say it almost as if paying less for something were a bad thing (oh, of course, you like macs, you must be one of the people who thinks “It costs more, therefore it must be better”). Also, the drop in ram price was most likely not due to Vista having higher hardware requirements. usually when there is a higher demand and need for something it’s price goes up, not down.
Shut the hell up. We all know you can play BM on a Mac, but we’re saying it’s designed for a PC, and will play better on a PC, and therefore is made for a PC. Sure you can port it, and we all know this, so why are you arguing?
Wow, so when people post “black mesa can only play on a PC, thread over” what they actually mean is “we all know you can play BM on a Mac?” Thanks for clearing that up.
The point is, if you’re arguing that PCs are superior because you can’t play BM on a Mac - time to get a new argument. Because
edit: wait, “you can port it?” What in the fuck are you talking about?
You can use a program like crossover games to play half life on a mac. Porting it would require a version of the source engine for the Mac, which doesn’t exist.
My buddy uses a mac, and he got half life 2 and episode 1 working under Mac because someone used wine or crossover or something to allow you to play it on a Mac. I’m sure if you can play half life 2, there’s a way to get BM working as well.
As for video editing really its between final cut and avid.
Final cut is starting to be used a little more in more open markets like commercials, tv shows, music videos etc but mostly it’s just independent/self employed people using fcp. Almost all places that make high end video/movies still use avid. Also vegas is another great video editor, and that’s PC only.
I hate macs, I really do, but that won’t stop me from playing black mesa through wine on OSX snow leopard, after all, it’s just a reboot away and I want to see how badly it will fail.
Honestly, I get sick of seeing Mac’s TV commercials “LOL WINDOWS HAS BILLIONS OF VIRUSES, 3 SECONDS ON THE INTERWEBS GIVES YOU VIRUSES” That’s what they pretty much say, Which is total bull shit. Mac are just as prone to get infected as Windows, the only reason why there are more bugs out there for windows is because Windows is more popular. I installed AVG and I haven’t been infected for years. No problems, nothing.
If you’re stupid enough to fall for the adds like “FREE AV PROGRAM HERE, CLICK HERE AND DOWNLOAD AVPROGRAM.EXE TO I FIX ALL OF YOUR VIRUSES” It doesn’t matter what OS you have, you’re going to get infected and you deserve it!
I’m all for giving Macs and Windows equal opportunities (I’d like to have one of their laptops, but for there price I can get a pure 1337 gaming laptop lol.) And I love DX10 with my 295 so, yeah…
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
