Let's remake... Half-Life 2?

So after playing through BM again, and using the Xen mod to put the HL: S files into BM - I really wanted to played HL2 again! But when I got started… the graphics made me feel a little elitist and moody :meh:

I know that there’s ONE texture mod for Half-Life 2, but I refuse to use Cinematic Mod because of this idiotic models. So… now what? Well… I came to a rather bold conclusion. A conclusion that I’m sure I’ll get flamed for… lets remake Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 and the source engine in general is what sparked the idea of a remake of Half-Life 1 with the source engine. It took 9 years, but now… Half-Life 1 looks, plays, and feels even better than when it came out 15 years ago.

Also… Black Mesa redefined the definition of remake. It’s not only not enough to update the textures to a high resolution anymore - you have to take the game and make it as if it were made by today’s standards. So in a sense - the name ‘remake’ has almost become a synonym for ‘remix’. So I say, let’s remix Half-Life 2. Seriously…

I don’t have any hammer knowledge and I’m too busy to start such a bold project on my own. But my idea is - what if we (the community) remake (or rather remix) Half-Life 2?

I really think if you wanted to have Half-Life 2 fit today’s standards, you would need to remake it from the ground up in a better engine.

coughsource 2cough

It could certainly be done. It’s just a matter of HL2 being a fairly enormous game to remix, which would likely mean a colossal amount of effort.

Yes, once Source 2 is available to public.

First we need a Valve made straight port to Source 2 of HL2 so people get disappointed by it and form a team to remake it from scratch.

that unofficial update seems to be dead :frowning: https://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1093025
seemed promising

Guis it’s gunna be Half-Lief 2: Sauce 2

Black Mesa East: Source

This is as close as you can get. At least for now.

If you check Filip Victors group https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Half-Life2Update and his public profile https://steamcommunity.com/id/filipvictors you’ll see that the mod is very much alive. It’s just Valve Time and “whenit’s done” approach again.

So an upgrade from Source 2006 to Source 2013 wouldn’t be good enough? Also, since HL2 is source-based, wouldn’t it be possible to use almost all the original maps? The scripted sequences would definitely need an update so I could see those maps needing big overhaul - but in theory, a lot of the material should be backwards compatible.

The hardest part would be updating the sounds/textures/models/scripts etc… At least from my knowledge.

Anyways - if we’re starting from scratch - I nominate CryTek as HL2’s new game engine

CryEngine? Half the point of HL2 was that even though it looked good, it was playable on most computers.

Unreal 4, nuff said.

Whatever. If you don’t spend at least a grand on a gaming PC - you’re not a true PC Gamer. So I say FUCK-ALL to the stupidz trying to play the latest games at maximum settings on a MOTHERFUCKIN laptop!

Hey, I have a $1000 desktop too… :frowning:

Don’t talk about your mom like that

You know, unless you just can’t afford it. Just throwing that out there. And who said a great gaming PC has to be a grand? Play your cards right and it can be half that.

You’re kind of an idiot.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
