That’s pretty awesome.
This is most likely aimed at game developers, rather the modding communities because so far steamworks has only been made available to 5 mod teams (to my knowledge).

Oh well, don’t really care about mods anyway. Most of them are crud and the only one I’m looking forward to is this one.
I’m just happy I can play the Source games I like to play with my friends without needing to boot Windows every so often. I feel a lot of additional L4D2 and TF2 hours creeping in on me.
I think that Apple will be happy to seem steam cross over onto their system. While there are other Digital distribution sights that have some mac games for sale, Steam is quite possibly the largest player in the digital distribution. Who knows, they might try to put “iSteam” on all their future stuff. I am not a mac user at all, and to be honest I don’t quite care, but the whole cross platform ownership and steam cloud for it is pretty cool. Who knows Mac users can probably buy windows only games and then either load up their windows on the mac to play it that way or tack down their nearest PC friends.
This is finally going to give Apple industries the in to gaming. Sure, it’ll still be a smaller gaming populace, but to the game industries, its just more people who will pay.
I just hope it won’t introduce even more choice-of-OS flamewars than already exists.
“mf lag”
“fucken noob u got windoze dont u?”
“wat?”
“macs rule!!!1!”
“fucken troll”
“u let bill gates raep u dont u lol!!!”
Yeah but then you just shoot them while they’re typing
You could cork it so you wouldn’t get teh raepd
corked=cross platform ownership
Some info on the why’s and the how’s of Valve’s decision to put Steam and Source on Mac: https://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/03/08/valve_apple_worked_closely_to_bring_steam_to_mac.html
Good for them, but does this mean that they’ll also be able to use mods made for PC?
Rather unlikely, as most total-conversion(or even just gameplay modification) mods use Windows-only libraries that are separate to Source.
But maps should work straight away.
Still, if there is a Mac version of the Source SDK I’m assuming it’s possible to make a Mac mod (M&M) using the assets from the PC mod.
It’s certainly possible, it’s just a question of whether mod teams want to get a programmer who works with MacOSX a lot on board(which are even harder to find than ‘normal’ Windows programmer") to get it to work on MacOSX.
According to some software engineers I know, there really isn’t that much difference in terms of coding, there is a difference and it’ll take some extra time to code for both OSX and Windows, but the difference isn’t/shouldn’t be that massive.
I’m not sure they’d need to redo their code. Assuming that the Mac Source SDK still uses C/C++ they could just import their assets (maps, models, etc…) and code into the Mac SDK and it will compile it for the Mac.
On the PC platform the Source SDK compiles C/C++ for the PC version, I’m sure that the Mac SDK will compile for the Mac platform.
According to the news post, they get both Mac and PC DLLs when they check the code. Methinks it won’t be too hard once it’s released.
With Blizzard games over battle.net there’s no Mac vs. PC wars, nor is there in any unreal games, so there wouldn’t be any flames in-game over what OS is used.
Anyone else excited about OpenGL though? 30 FPS frame-rate boost happening for me
EDIT: JeffMOD, macs don’t use DLLs, that’s the one thing I’m a bit concerned about.
Perhaps it will use DLLs, it will be the first time I would see a DLL working on a Mac.
Well, STEAM for the Mac is coming out this month (or next, I forget) so we’ll soon know how it works
It’s quite possible for mods to be ported to the Mac. The question remains whether BM will. From what I’m feeling from the devs, it ain’t happening. I could be wrong, but I don’t think that they’re going to take the time to port BM over to the Mac.
Looks like Valve is starting another gaming revolution, this time on the mac.
Not sure if it’s a gaming one though
Well this truly is great news for Mac users. Although I’m not sure how good this will benefit on the Windows vs Mac, it seems to me like adding fuel to the fire.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
