yeah, not much people play games on a crapintosh!
I doubt there will be a crossover fee. Valve isnât EA, they just want to expand their market to Mac users, not make people pay twice.
Youâd have to be dumb to suggest theyâll charge people for the same game twice.
Itâs nothing special, itâs Steam, on a Mac.
Obviously itâll work with detecting your OS, if youâre on OSX itâll download the Mac version of the game, if youâre on Windows itâll download the PC version.
Itâs just that, no extra costs for either side, that would be done.
The whole thing is a good idea from Valve, itâs creating a market where there wasnât much of one before, Mac gamers will probably all get Steam and start buying software from it as it opens up a library of games through content delivery, also, Source engine now ported to OSX, so more games for Mac users, not just old ones brought up again.
Itâll make some developers create OSX games, perhaps UT2k4 devs (Tripwire Interactive) will cook Mac versions, as UT2k4 mods run happily on the Mac version of UT2k4.
Itâs bringing gaming back to the Mac with Valve at the helm with Steam.
Itâs not Mac Steam or iSteam, itâs Steam brought over to Mac, the difference would lie in the distributed content (PC only, Mac only, both).
Perhaps this will bridge the gap between Mac and PC users, so people would understand the different OSes, it was stupid when Windows users called the mouse a toy and when Mac users said Windows crashes every 5 seconds, it should all end with the understanding that different operating systems exist for different people and different computers, that is all it is.
link to where you got the info from plz
Steam is on Mac? Havenât you heard?
No, the fact that there wonât be any additional charge to get mac games running.
Because my 5 year old neice can copy/paste PC data files and download a .app from the internet, instant PC to Mac conversion for applicable engines (Iâm talking Unreal engine and all works by ID soft and Blizzard here, itâs literally a copy/paste download a 32kb file done), this worked with darkforces and jediknight 2 for me, (Halo also, but thatâs not on Steam), these are the only games Iâve done it with, but Iâm confident itâll be just the same for Source.
It also goes the other way, my install of UT2k4 is a Mac OSX version running on PC, just swapped the mac .app for the UT2k4 PC demo launcher.
It would be entirely retarded, Mac users would eventually notice the scam and just buy the PC versions and swap launchers.
It would simply be completely retarded.
EDIT: If valve do opt for the lazy emulated layer option, theyâd go for a free choice like what theyâre already doing using DOS box for classic games, or Mac users would again, buy the PC version and download their choice of free emulator.
Theyâd have to be different versions: AFaIK, OSX doesnât have DirectX.
Direct X is a Microsoft only thing, OSX uses OpenGL, however, it wouldnât need different versions, Windows can use OpenGL, Half-Life1 runs better with OpenGL than directX on windows, John Carmac of ID software wrote a letter complaining to Bill Gates that DirectX is really shit, they should give up as OpenGL is better.
Also, all the new âDirect X 10, 11â features and updates? Been in OpenGL for years!
So itâs entirely feasible, like I said, swapping launchers, even if one is OpenGL and the other Direct X, the data files will be the same, so nothingâs stopping anyone swapping the launchers around, unless there are Mac only product keys, but thatâs just retarded seeing as no-other Mac/PC game developer has done that and see it as a good idea.
Officially announced: https://www.valvesoftware.com/news.php
Summary: full support in all online services, source runs on OpenGL as well as Direct3D, Windows and Mac updates simultaneously, Windows and Mac can play together, you have the games on Mac if you own the games on Windows.
I am happy.
Wait a second, we can settle Mac vs Win once and for all now. In deathmatch!
Sounds like a plan.
Yes! My plans to get a mac are go ahead, using linux atm, love it, but would not use it for everything.
ââChecking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,â said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. âWeâre always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.ââ
certainly makes it sound (to me) like Source mods will work on Mac too, after a recompile.
Itâs more complicated then that, because the devs could have easily wrote code that is windows only, and like I said before, the Source SDK might not be released at the same time for mac.
âSupport for the Mac in Source and Steamworks is available to third parties immediately. Interested developers should contact Jason Holtman at jasonh@valvesoftware.com.â
Well this is pretty neat, looking forward to seeing a mac vs pc TF2 server if there were any.
If this delays BM I will kill Jobs.
does this make any sense? a) how could something valve did delay Black Mesa? and b) why would you kill Steve Jobs when he had less than nothing to do with the decision to bring Steam to Mac?
I donât know much about how Apple works but I would think itâd be reasonable for Steve to have made the decision.
