How’s a Radeon 4870 1GB fare in Source-y games?
It’d run them well.
Good, I got one in shipping right now.
speaking of video cards…
My 512MB 7300GT is starting to … emm… get old.
I don’t have much money to spare, so I’m not looking for something worth hundreds of dollars.
I think for the same price I paid my 7300 few years ago I can probably get something much better now.
Any suggestions?
I got a Pentium D 2.8GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, … rest doesn’t matter I guess.
I need to get some more RAM, but that’s another story… my mobo only supports 2GB (2 slots x 1GB ), so I need to get rid of my 2 512MB sticks and get 2 1GB ones, bleh.
Whats the price youre looking for.
Hey woah.
Just finished your post.
If you dont get a better CPU, getting a new GPU wont help at all.
Its a bottleneck, you see.
I have 2 hyperthreaded Pentium 3.06GHz CPUs, 4 GB RAM, and they cant keep up with my 7950 GT 512MB.
Dont waste money on a new GPU, it wont help.
Yeah I’d also say updating that processor is more important right now.
I think Pentium D’s use the same sockets as intel core 2 duo’s, so your lucky there.
An Intel Core 2 duo E7400 will only set you back about a hundred bucks.
I’d say your better off with an entirely new pc though…
Also, you want to be sure that the card will fit. It probably won’t be a problem, just something you want to be sure of before you buy a card. Video cards these days are getting closer to being described as “boxes” rather than chipsets, these days.
Have to disagree with you. The 7300 is a really, really crappy card. The difference between a 7950 and a 7300 is huge. I had a 7300 and a 2.8 ghz pentium D (same as him) and I got >10 fps on portal. I upgraded to a Radeon 4670 and now I get close to 70.
Are you talking a normal one or a gt here? Not that I know how much the difference is between those but it might be adequate.
Is it slower than an 6800GT?
And well I just recommend him to update to a new pc. 1 gig is very little, a pentium D ain’t exactly fantastic and neither is a 7300. And since his mobo only supports 2 gigs I recon it’s not quite high end either.
Didn’t think making a new thread for my question would make sense.
Could someone please tell me how good or bad the following config is?
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00 GHz
Transcend 2 GB RAM
Palit (NVIDIA) GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB GDDR3 TC(Turbo Cache) 1GB
ASUS P5N73-AM Motherboard
and the general Logitech multimedia keyboard and mouse etc.
it’s pretty decent, especially the cpu. You’ve got a lot of headroom in the CPU.
thanks but i really didn’t get what you mean. Could you predict the performance of some games on it?
What he means is those E8400 CPUs are known to be good overclockers.
Though the performance of your CPU makes you video card look a bit under matched. Those 9600GSO cards are basically just 9600GT cards redone. While for the time they were nice, they are showing age in newer games.
9600 is old news. They’re the midrange of the 9 series cards which, like maxthelimit said, are showing their age.
What are the cheapist Nividia Cards cost?
Something like an Nvidia riva tnt2? With a whopping 32mb? I think you can get em for a few dollars. If you’re really looking for the cheapest.
Can’t exactly recommend that though.
If you’re really looking for a good, very cheap card from Nvidia, I’d say the 9800GT? You can get those for bout 90 dollars.
And by the way: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. IT’S GORDON. WITH TWO O’S. NOT AN A.
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Sorry about the signature, and are they good cards or crap, I run a Acer Aspire 5710 but I dunno if the card is built into my motherboard.
I just picked up a Nvidia 9800 GTX+ on eBay for about $100 USD… Was that reasonable? Seems good as they were going for $180 new on Newegg and Amazon.
Used?
Cool, i didn’t know that. So, should i overclock my CPU or not, and if yes, how can i overclock it?
I’d like to add that i can play HL2: EP2 at an average fps of 55-65 through most of the game with all the highest settings, 16x AF and 2X AA. I checked the fps in-game using the ‘cl_showfps 1’ command.
I think it’s pretty OK for a gamer like me.
How well do you think Crysis or Warhead would play on my system? And what about BM?
