Is this video card any good?

I’m getting a Nvidia 8800 GT video card, is that a good choice?

Yes.

Well it depends on the price. Because sometimes you can get a better card for the smae price.

It’s a good card for its price.

Yeah, that’s a good choice.

Alright, thanks guys!

Its a little old though.

Sure, but it’s still a good card.

I know, I’m getting it from my dad. But I know it’s better than what I have. So I’m pretty happy.
EDIT: I just figured out I’m getting two of them, how good is that?

Umm, better than one?

If you don’t have SLI, the second one is useless.

If your motherboard has two pci-e connectors you’re good, if not, you need a new motherboard.

I’m still using a 8800GT, I’ve tested a 9800GTX+ and I’ll say that the 8800GT will do 95% of what the 9800GTX can.

I have SLI.

8800 is a great card for a ridiculously low price. It’s not the most powerful, but it can run almost everything with at least medium settings.

That’s the best answer yet.
I’ll also be getting a new proccessor, a new motherboard, and x64 Vista ultimate.
Edit: What do you think my fps will be like in Black Mesa? Keep in mind I have two of these cards and SLI while answering this question please.

At least 150, probably above 200.

My jaw just FELL OFF. Thanks for the info.

And yet you will actually see only 24.

I thought it was 30? IIRC your eyes can see 300 images per seconds but your brain can only analyse 30 of them. And then again IIRC the brain don’t analyse the entire image. Maybe 70% or so.

Optics don’t really work in a way that can be expressed in Hz. I do know that, though the details are lost in memory, so I’m not going to join this discussion of half informed statements.

As for the OP. I would NEVER at this point BUY an 8800GT because it is an older architecture, which doesn’t match the price/performance of current cards.

If I was given an 8800GT though I definitely COULD find use for it, as it is still a serviceable card. If it is in SLi then folding is a must. Those SLi machines are monster folders.

People who say the 4890 isn’t worth it are dumb or at least uninformed. The 4890s can be had with deals for around 169bucks USD. You are looking at about 139bucks for the least expensive 4870 1GB. So that is 30bucks you get better performance with better overclocking overhead, and improved clock per clock performance.
Being able to OC a 4890 above 1GHz on the core, and crank the memory allows the 4890 to surpass a stock GTX 285 for performance in many cases, and that is some out of the box versions, there is often lotsa headroom over that as well.

I like the GTX 275 as well, but unfortunately the prices haven’t dropped on that like they have on the 4890. In that price range it’s a clear win for AMD and the 4890. We’ll see what happens in the coming months though…
