saying numbers just exsist because you say they do is pointless, it’s like saying I have 3 kids, Bob, Gary and Alan but I don’t, but I because I say they do they exsist. This is not the point. If I counted how much money I have, I have made that a number, or if I count all the trees in the world that is now a number. A number is irrellvant if it doens’t realte to anything. Everything in the universe has a formula
Children are physical things. Numbers are not. Numbers are concepts that are there regardless of whether they have a purpose or not. You can’t compare such an abstract concept like numbers to children.
And even this Extraordinarily Big Number (“EBN”) can be used in a formula.
EBN + 1 = X
Solve for X.
the realtion to “things” is that like numbers they must be proved to exsist to exsist, they can’t exsist if they have no purpose
So what would you use that equation with and for? What does it solve? What is X?
Grahams Number for example solves this
Consider an n-dimensional hypercube, and connect each pair of vertices to obtain a complete graph on 2n vertices. Then colour each of the edges of this graph using only the colours red and black. What is the smallest value of n for which every possible such colouring must necessarily contain a single-coloured complete sub-graph with 4 vertices which lie in a plane?
Okay so let’s assign these numbers a “purpose”. Let’s tie them to a human life.
Let’s say one human was alive at a time. Our brains are wired in a way that all we do is count. When we die, the next human goes on counting from where we left off. This continues forever. We will never, ever, reach infinity. We are always able to add one more. These numbers could be called “real” now, because their purpose would be to be counted, they are perceived, therefore they are now “real”.
that “example” solves no visable problem or offers any solution, it is random and as such whatever number you’re trying to prove exsists simply doesnt. But if you can prove numbers are infinite or find a number bigger then Graham then congratulations you are about to become very rich and famous lol
So if I say the number 495824395284395 exists, it doesn’t, just because it has no practical purpose? Are the numbers composing it not real? What if I say 495824395284395 + 1 = 495824395284396? It’s been used in an equation, is it real now?
Am I rich yet?
I found a bigger number: ∞
X is EBN + 1, of course.
no it doesnt solve a problem, its just random, unless of course you had that many pennys and you added one (If i’ve got it right) then that would make your new number exsist. but i’m unsure not being a great mathmatican (Speller) or genius lol if it counts unless its in a formula like pier2 or e=mc2. It’s all very complicated
so in e=mc^2, e doesnt actually mean energy but mc^2 you sir have blown my mind lol
Would you like to expand on that, how did you find this number? lol
Numbers don’t need to be tied to a physical entity to be real.
Many mathematical equations don’t have lay person, real world usage. What does the lay person care about the trillionth digit of pi? Energy really is matter multiplied by the square of the speed of light. And vice versa.
i have infinite number of children and they have all possible names but i’ve never used my son Gary’s name so he doesn’t exist?
if that were true numbers would hold no meaning to our lives what so ever
Numbers CAN be tied to a physical entity, such as I have 27 women chained in my basement, but they do not NEED to be. The number 27 is a number whether I have women chained in my basement or not.
Numbers are just some concepts in our brain, from physical point of view there is no big difference between a “tree”, a “door”, or an “infinity” - they exist just because of some neuronal wirings. Some concepts can be related to physical objects, some other cannot. I don’t see a reason why the nature of the universe (whether it’s infinite or not) would have any influence on these concepts or vice versa.
A tree and a door exist because the quarks that compose the atoms that compose the tree or door exist separately from ourselves. Numbers are what we use to explain the universe and how it works in a way that we can comprehend. Our numbers and measurements do not affect the universe (well actually our measurements do, but I won’t go into that), but the universe does affect our numbers.
And like I said before, something can be finite yet boundless.
its like having a bath tub full of water but instead of water we have numbers, if the universe is finite we can only fill that bath with so many numbers before we reach some sort of an end number, but if its infinite the numbers we pour in would have no end
Poor example probably lol, but hopefully you get what i mean
