iPod Touch 3G Upgrade(?)

So, here’s the deal, folks.

I am using an iPod Touch 3G (64GB) and I’m still using the 3.1.3 firmware. I’m pondering an update to 4.x though I don’t know which is best.

What is your opinion on version 4 on a 3rd Generation iPod Touch? Pros? Cons? Advice?

(Note: “Buy an Android or some other device” is not an acceptable topic of conversation in this thread; please keep on topic. Thanks!)

Only reason not to upgrade just yet is because there’s no good jailbreak yet.

Well, from what I’ve seen, iOS4 allows for a springboard wallpaper (behind the icons) and multitasking which is the only reason I would jailbreak to be honest. If I can get both without a jailbreak, that’s fine.

Jailbreaking 3.1.3 and adding the springboard wallpaper (desktop/sms background) and multitasking (backgrounder) would be a better idea than upgrading to 4.x, at least to me.

If you would rather not jailbreak, 4.1 works rather well on the 3rd gen.

Are there any advantages in upgrading that 3.1.3 with jailbreak can’t do?

there is that PDF exploit, and Game Center, but otherwise no. i find the stock multitasking to be much more convenient than Backgrounder. If you want jailbreak, update to 4.1 (not 4.2.1) and jailbreak with greenpois0n :wink:

Thanks. Already downloaded and am using 4.1. Looks verah noice! :smiley:

I feel like I don’t have to jailbreak now because now it’s doing what I wanted from this device. Perhaps I’ll update to 4.2 soon. :slight_smile:

Go with IOS4, its much faster and smoother.

I agree with P-Thunder. Just go with iOS4(.2). It’s not an iPhone, but merely a music player, so I see no need to jailbreak an iPod.

Or if you want ios4 features on 3.x.x, use whited00r.

If you had a 2G touch things would be different, the 3G itouch has the same hardware as the iphone 3GS, almost as fast as the iphone 4. Ipods 2g and lower are really laggy on iOS 4 or so I’ve heard.

Bolteh: You might not see a need to jailbreak but there are some apps that you can’t get without it. I don’t have a need for such apps yet but if I want them, I shouldn’t be restricted from having them. 4.1 is where I’m at now and I’m going to stay there until 4.2 is jailbroken. I just would like that option if I want it. :slight_smile:

I kinda wish they had 3g or 4g 'net coverage on the third-generation iTouches instead of just wifi…but I’m thinking about getting a mobile router eventually. :slight_smile:
