I'm confused by all the complaining.

Because people don’t want to read.

and because it’s RIGHT ON THE TOP OF THE PAGE AND DOESNT NEED MENTIONING :’(

ok click the home page button.
now scroll down to where it says “UPDATES”
read it it plainly stats
follow us for recent updates.

now where on the page dos it tell people to use the wiki for updates? no where you have to go to the wiki page to see that.

i dont know if any of you know this but that is very bad business practice.
its also bad markiting of your product.

im not saying the sould give a complet run down on everythin they could at lest pop in once a month an post some stuff on twitter and every other month show some thing they have worked on on youtube.

and you have to relise they are using a mod builder they are not making this game from scratch they get alot of static meshes given to them they get alot of code given. they get the entire plot given to them. they have pre made draft levels(the actual) so they dont have to do alot of testing on theroy things.

this should cut the time they need down but as you said they are a smaller team and need to talk long distance.

these two canle eachother out and it should be normal.

but like i said i don’t care how long this takes their are things i want much more so i can wait for this.

all i’m trying to do is point out how you can stop complaints but instead i’m left feeling attacked by the “massa fan boys” acting as if the creators are gods.

no we are all human and they have problems like all of us. its whether people try to solve their own problems instead of blaming their situation that makes a difrance

This is a mod for a game that’s intended for adults. We shouldn’t have to hold your hand and instruct you on exactly what pages to look it. This forum has a bad reputation for flaming new people, but the new people are the ones that join up on the forum just to bitch and complain about the fact that little updates that are released aren’t thrown in their faces and they can’t be bothered to read the wiki for themselves.

Except that almost everything in this mod is being modeled by them. They’re porting over the .357, crowbar, headcrab, and I think the zombie. There’s probably a few other things I skipped over on accident but you’re completely ignorant if you think that they can pretty much copy and paste 90% of HL2’s assets over and just make up the difference with their own work. Almost every model they’ve released for public viewing they’ve custom-made themselves.

I think it’s safe to say that the PR of the Black Mesa mod leaves much to be desired.
There are tons of things to suggest (like removing the recent changes twitter link from the homepage etc…) but the devs stopped caring about PR-complaints long ago and so did I. They don’t care to please people with updates anymore, because there will always be people who are never pleased. They only care to finish the game. So it’s no use to complain/suggest.

If it gives BM a bad name then so be it, all I want is the mod finished. I’ve stopped defending it and i’ve stopped complaining about it.

Well screw all of you whiners :fffuuu:

I visited the forum for months before they re-opened the registration. All I did was look around, check out the wiki etc. I didn’t just join up and complain about no updates, I looked.

The mods aren’t going to get hold of you personally and give you an update, you’re given the wiki/youtube/twitter/forum links so use them. Its not hard. Hell, all you have to do is look at some of the threads on the forum to get a firm idea of what status the mod is at.

Thanks for that! As much as I love Half Life the original, Ep. 1 and Ep.2, I don’t have too much time to devote to the progress of this Mod with work and family. Once in a while, I’ll stop by and check to see how things are going. These screen shots are the newest thing I’ve seen to date. There’re encouraging!

if you DO check twitter if you DO check youtube you would have notesed they are not updated so your list is cut down to two.

now for the forum any time someone comes looking here for updates they are flamed so now their is only one place you can go see updates

if you want people to stop complaining about lack of updates you have to make at least a litle more efort to met the pepole half way there is an between of giving 100’s of updates everywhere and only giving one update every now and then in one remote corner of your web site

Where “one remote corner” is one click away from the main front page and every other subsequent page.

No, they really don’t. Both the devs and forum regulars constantly deal with people coming to the forums and asking the same exact questions “Why isn’t the mod released?” “Is the mod dead?” “Why do you not update anymore?” And we’ve all answered those questions several dozens of times. People should know by now that if you WANT information of the mod, then you probably want it enough to force yourself through all that gratuitous work it takes to click “Wiki” and then “Recent changes”. It’s not like the people who want information are exactly breaking their backs looking for it, they basically glance at the twitter feed and the YouTube page and go “Oh, no updates, mod is ded i’mma go complain nao”, and it’s ridiculous that they’re that fucking lazy that they can’t click two links to find out about edits to the wiki.

Seriously, if we’d known about this, Black Mesa would’ve been done ages ago!

I don’t think 8bit knows what he means by “mod builder”.

Source SDK? Hammer? Maya? Photoshop?

I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about, period.

Im pretty sure valve will find a way to make you pay for this when its released.

Personally I think the people who are too lazy to check the actual website (Wiki/forums) for new information and instead just call it dead on account of the inactive twitter/moddb page don’t deserve to play the mod.

All I see is fellow newb registrations :stuck_out_tongue:

If you think about it Black Mesa IS building a brand new game. Most games that are made for retail are made using a pre existing engine that is used as the base tech that is modded in whatever way is required to suit the dev’s need (I know this is a very ignorant explanation of something I don’t know much about). Regardless of that the storyline looks like its getting a revamp too. From what I can see they are basically building a brand new game from scratch.

Also about everyone talking about getting flamed for being new, as you can see from my join date and post count I am brand new. From my experience of this forum as long as you do your reasesrch before asking questions (like everyone should), and as long as you don’t complain about everything everyone here treats you very nicely. I’ve had like 5 or 6 people treat me very nicely in my short stay here all simply because I don’t act like a douche

Seriously dude, I didn’t know that was so dificult just scroll down the page and notice a big white text written “Wiki Updates”, with a detailed description of each link inside the box:

@Drakey83

I couldn’t agree more with you. I’m fairly new myself, well I am and I ain’t, but I’ve not been flamed once in the entire time I’ve been registered here.

@The General Public

I’ve heard this place likened to third world countries, where everyone is intolerant and hateful and treats any new member like trash. This isn’t true. People here are generally pretty nice. They’ve got a warped sense of humor, but I don’t mind that since I’ve got one too. And yes, I feel that if someone is too lazy to do the small amount of research necessary to figure out what’s going on with the mod, then they probably have no business being part of the community.

Everyone here has shown colossal patience in regards for waiting for this mod, and we will continue to do so. All that is asked of new members is that they have the patience to learn how to get the information they want. It’s really not hard to figure out. It’s not like these forums aren’t riddled with people saying “check the wiki for most recent updates”. It’s all over the place. Unfortunately there’s that whole “TL;DR” phenomenon going on now…

and 8bit_God, yes, the devs are using modding tools… the same modding tools that valve used to make half life 2. They don’t have some special super application that makes doing this a breeze. They have to use the same tools that Valve used, with less than half the staff that Valve has. And, they really don’t have much in the way of “pre-existing” materials being used in this mod. Correct me if I’m wrong on this Devs, but I’d say about 90% of the materials used in the making of Black Mesa are custom made for this mod. Sure, some of the scripting is probably pre-existing from Half Life 2, but consider the amount of enemies/weapons/npcs that were not in Half Life 2 in comparison to Half Life. They even had to remake vortigaunts because the HL2 version do not have any attacking animations.

One of the few things they didn’t have to make from scratch with this game was the general story and progression of the game.

So yeah, they’ve got modding tools. That really doesn’t make a difference.

Oh, in regards to the values I stated above in regards to man-hours. In particular to the 7.5 hours a day 5 days a week method… most Companies work a whole hell of a lot more hours than that and usually work 7 days a week. I spoke with a buddy of mine who has a job with Bandai Namco who confirmed that my original estimates were abit off. So yeah… I underestimated in this case, but my general point remains the same.

Edit: Ya know… in regards to my above statement about not having been flamed once here… I’m feeling kinda left out now, anyone feel like flaming me… just for the heck of it? :stuck_out_tongue:

OMG, WTF NEWB!!!11!

But back on topic and steering away from the fires, I don’t see why people want more updates. The media that has already been released has been enough to whet my appetite, and I’d much rather see the rest when I’m playing the game. I wouldn’t want the mod team to make another trailer that basically ruined all the best parts, because for what reason would I then want to play this mod?

EDIT: This is on topic, because it’s basically a reason why there shouldn’t be complaining.

Yay! I feel loved and unloved all at the same time!

Ahem.

Yes! I couldn’t agree more with you Cat_Fuzz, Ofcourse I like to see updates being posted on the wiki, but I don’t really need to see more media released. I KNOW it’s awesome, I don’t wanna ruin it by seeing it before it’s finished.

Ofcourse… even if they did make a new trailer, which they won’t, I’d still play Black Mesa.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
