I think Windows doesn't like me

Specifically, it ran a startup repair after my computer crashed, and, despite saying I would only lose recently installed programs, the only things left are Tag: the power of paint, steam, firefox, (without bookmarks) and maybe a few other programs I have sitting around but don’t use. I don’t even have system preferences or my desktop background.

Also, McAfee security is still here, but doesn’t want to work.

Shit happens?

Also, it now apparently refuses to recognize that I’m using a laptop, so I can’t find the option to make it stop clicking when I tap the trackpad. Can anyone offer me help with this?

format the drive to factory settings (some recovery tools are probably included in a hidden partition)

How do I do that, exactly? And I don’t think recovery tools are what I need, since windows itself technically deleted everything.

REcovery tools are basicly an installer that copies that hidden partition to your main partition, formatting it in the process. the way to be able to use it depends on the brand and model.

also, get a better antivirus than mcafee.

I see.

What’s wrong with McAfee?

mcafee is just not a great antivirus program. It gives me shit all the time. Found an virus, and it SAID it deleted it. That was almost a 2000 dollar SAID. you get my meaning?

?? ^what?

Mcaffee sucks because of many reasons. The biggest ones being that its uses a butt load of resources in the background, has alot of interference, and has really bad detection rate. If you want a good anti virus, i suggest avira, or avast anti virus.

Oh yea, on topic: If I was in your case, I would just format the drive and re install windows. From what you’ve said so far, your computer must’ve hated you d:

Edit: Oh yea, I’ve heard of RATS that can delete windows core files, and really fuck you up, maybe that’s what happened?

reinstall windows?

yeah. when you start to experience something like what you have, you might as well reformat and start vanilla.

Nothing beats the smell of a freshly baked OS. With just the drivers and only a couple of apps installed… mmmm… Damn, now I’m actually tempted to reinstall myself.

Oh and windows IS a bitch. It won’t support hyperthreading on my CPU and Win7 is so much of a bitch it won’t install without it either.

McAffee is a virus.
Just saying.

I see. I’m not really in a position to change my antivirus right now, but I’ll take consider your advice for the future.

Also, I now think the problem might actually be that windows has problems logging in; it says I’m using a default account because it can’t log into mine or something. In any case, I hope to get a completely new computer soon, but I don’t have any money or a job, and my dad says I have to pay for half of it now. :\

Edit: I think I’m right; by using the “recently changed” feature, I can find some of my files, most of which work. It’s weird, though, because none of my stuff is there; for instance, I downloaded Minecraft.exe to the “downloads” folder (forgot to configure my firefox options), but it’s not there when I navigate to it.

Edit 2: I would like to just start over clean, but there’s a few files and things I want from my old computer. Plus, I’m unsure what’s wrong, so a complete reinstall may not be necessary. It’s a good thing I’m paranoid enough to save my really important files online :retard:

get your documents out of there, format the bitch then install windows 7 ultimate

and never ever use windows startup recovery

seriously you’re better off trying to fix it manually with a linux live cd

external harddrive was the best $60 bucks I ever spent. It saved me during my last virus or whatever it was that killed my exe programs.

It’s nothing personal. Windows doesn’t like anybody.

It sounds like one of those problems where it seems like Windows is just fucking around with you and won’t tell you what’s going on. If you find a way to get to vanilla or factory default, you’ll have peace of mind. Until then, it can be really confusing and annoying.
Best of luck.

It said it got rid of a virus, but it didn’t. the computer cost me 2000 dollars, and I almost lost it. Thank God I don’t trust any part of mcaffee, otherwise, I wouldn’t be typing this right now, on this computer at least.

why? both avast and avira are FREE and way better than mcafee.

1- use a live cd,
2- backup needed/important files,
3- format,
4- install windows.

… Dude… you can’t “lose” a computer because of a virus… Virus are software and don’t mess with the hardware (except maybe in extremely rare cases? I dunno? Worst I can think of is something that fucks with the BIOS…), a simple re-format and your computer is brand new.

There hasn’t been a virus that can do hardware damage since like the windows 2000 era. And about all they did was turn off the system fans so it would overheat and in most cases shutdown. Before that there were some that could change/damage/remove your bios but those were never very widespread and were created for older operating systems.
