I don't like Steam, but is it the only choice to get HL1 from?

Just like to point out:
The original WON version is not obtainable with patches. Patches do not include Pak0, only new DLLs. They no longer sell the WON version, so if you don’t have it now, you can never have it legally.

Steam is’nt that bad, unless your connection is crap, then you can’t update it without it crashing. (I know from experience :frowning: )

Technically you can, just look on amazon or eBay for a new copy. But a lot of newer graphics cards don’t like the resolution of the main menu.

Exactly.

I’m sure it will be your problem when you realize no one’s making PC games anymore because of widespread piracy.
To me, Steam is the best kind of DRM. Sure, it has its fair share of problems. but it’s either that, or limited installations. So if your PC crashes a few times or if you need to make space on your harddrive, your fucked.
Asking a developer to not have any DRM is asking them to go bankrupt. No one has respect for the artist anymore.

Also, Steam is the only way to get Half-Life 2 and play Black Mesa: Source. So why are you even here?

^qft, I would think this sums up what most people here think about Steam, and is completely true in my eyes.

Also, it’s not clever to come onto such a Steam/Valve oriented forum and slam steam so badly, is it. I should think almost everyone here uses, or has used, Steam.

C’mon, it’s a HL2 mod forum, and your saying “I don’t wanna start a war, lololol steam sux”
.

Anyone considered to say that HL generation is available, along with every other title from the HL and CS universe on torrents. Personally i own the original retail boxes of em (Im a collector of retail hardboxes from my old favorite games).

“You can’t resell PC games anyway. Most games today come with a unique CD key. If one CD key is registered to two owners, that is piracy. Then the courts get involved and before you know it your fined $25000 dollars for some game you bought out of the resale bin for $10.”

Oh and btw, as a reply to that piracy talking, Counter Strike Source (the most downloaded torrent version), has been downloaded by over 500000 people, and the other titles are downloaded thousands of times as well, and believe it or not, there are ways to get around steam, and still have a fully functional game. Just saying…

And just last thing: the “courts” are more after the uploaders, rather than the downloaders…Without the uploader, there would be no downloader. thus it is HIS fault, it is HIM who have caused the damage, its HIM who uploaded that file to begin with.

I prefer to buy a retail copy of a game, but for games so oldschool like, Jazz Jackrabbit, Legend of Croc etc it aint really so easy, and thus i use torrents for those. developers like Valve, Epic Games etc, they will always have my respect, thus i would rather have a retail copy. I think its important to support the developers that you have tremendous respect for. And NO, i dont advertise the use of torrents, i simply said it because no one else did.

Okay, you don’t support the use of torrents, but then you tell everyone that there are ways to bypass Steam and that they won’t be punished for downloading a game.
Thanks for contributing to the downfall of PC gaming, douche.

Fun fact: You won’t be able to play Black Mesa if you don’t use Steam.

Also the Half-Life Anthology pack is an absolute bargain on Steam.

So, basically, suck it up and install Steam.

Yup. And then realize that people on Amazon who 1-star all steam games because of Spore are douchebag idiots who shouldn’t be allowed to use a computer, let alone review games.

Yeah that’s basically what it comes down to. Steam has some other cool features like checking the integrity of the game files and defragging etc, but I don’t know how useful these really are. If I had the choice I’d rather not use Steam, but I don’t mind it that much. It’s got it’s pros and cons.

Just buy the goddamn PS2 version if you hate steam.

Awww, adorable!
Now I just need a smack talking side-kick wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.
Then it would be a combination of my 3 favorite things: Halo, V for Vendetta, and killing pirate douchebags!

I think the cockroach has been sufficiently told his answer. I just hope he comes back again and we havent lost a potential customer.

lol, great!
And I just understood the message in your Avatar. “I’m the Epic Fail GUY.”

[COLOR=‘Red’]Enough, guys.

OH, I C WHAT YOU DID THAR!!!

This thread might as well end, the guy said that he fixed his problem, I think.

one word. EBAY.

FFS, OP, just convince finally that you simply have a crappy internet connection.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
