I don't like Steam, but is it the only choice to get HL1 from?

Yea, i never played HL1, yes i suck.

Well, i hate Steam and i don’t want to give them money, but i am not sure if i buy the game somewhere else i will be able to play it on Vista and get the latest patches.

If yes, where can i download the patches and everything i need to make it work?

You can try the patches on filefront for the origin ‘won’ version of half-life, but who knows if it works on vista.

If you don’t want to give Steam your money, you don’t want to give Valve your money. Therefore, you don’t want to play Half-Life anyway.

Why exactly do you hate Steam? Steam is only a Software Distribution Platform (also one of the better ones imo). Also Steam is directly run and owned by Valve Software who are also the creators of HL1 (and all the other HL-Titles).
Basically it wouldnt even make a Difference whether you purchase HL1 (or any other Valve game) in a Store or in Steam (except for the DVD-box you get in a Store) since in both cases Valve will receive an equal ammount of money for their product. (In Steam a game can be sold cheaper than in a store since there are no shipping packaging or other costs that add onto the price).
Also Steam is the only supported update-platform by Valve so even if you bought the game in a Store you’d have to install Steam to get all the Updates.
Which is also the answer to this :

In short :
You have to Install Steam if you want to play or update a legally purchased Valve game. There is no way around it.

What i mean is that i don’t want to support Steam, i like to actually own my games.

But HL1 existed before Steam so why would i need it to run it? And if the updates were available before Steam existed then why would i need it to update the game?

You do actually own the games you buy. It’s not like Valve wants to molest your sister or anything so much as they want you to play their games without bugs and stuff.

It is the original game, it has only been slightly updated i.e. bugfixes, all game mechanics and game content remain the same as they were on release. (With the exception of the german version of the game where they removed blood and gibs and replaced soldiers with robots…)

Edit : If you dont know what Steam is about, I suggest reading this Wikipedia article :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(content_delivery)

How do you not own a game you bought on Steam. Sure, you have to use Steam to play the games, but you paid for it, you can play it, then you own it.
Besides, Steam if free, so why is everyone complaining? It’s not like that Onlive shit where you have to pay every month just to play the game. Also, there’s a bargain deal every 5 seconds.
So unless you have a better solution to stop piracy, then I hope Steam rules the world!

Because i can’t resell my games, because if Steam fails to start i can’t play my games, because Steam is buggy as hell, so many reasons.

To me Steam is the most intrusive kind of DRM ever created and i could care less about piracy, that’s their problem not mine. Like someone in a forum that i go to said “Steam has the account holder completely by the balls”.

Anyway, i don’t wanna start a discussion about Steam since this is not the goal of this topic. I found the latest patch for HL1 in Filefront.

Thanks for you help!

YOU WELCOM

Actually, for most games on Steam, you can actually bypass steam somehow by creating a shortcut to the main exe with a command line or two added.

I cant remember what the commands are exactly, but I know they exist.

hate steam

ok i lol’d

You can’t resell PC games anyway. Most games today come with a unique CD key. If one CD key is registered to two owners, that is piracy. Then the courts get involved and before you know it your fined $25000 dollars for some game you bought out of the resale bin for $10.

Are you really going to resell your computer games? If you don’t want to keep your games, buy a console and rent.

Valve will release a patch, plus you can just create a shortcut to the game executable.

Name all of the bugs you can. Starting now. Go.

Just so you know, Amazon reviews are not a reliable source. It’s totally obvious that you’ve never actually used steam.

That is why i hate malaysia game store, always sell ripoff game.

Like what?

I’m pretty sure you don’t have a clear understanding of steam. Steam 5 years ago was buggy, but it’s pretty solid and fast now. If steam goes down or you lose your net connection, you can play in offline mode, if steam were to ever die as a system, they said at one point (IIRC) that they would make sure everybody got their games and they could play them without steam or valve existing or whatever.

yes, i’m running on vista, and it works fine

5 years ago everyone was saying the same thing. fuck steam sucked back then. But now I see it is just the way things had to go. yeah so just buy the game on steam or dl it, shit its 11 years old ffs.

I dont know what all the fuss is about. Steam is only the delivery system. It is not the game itself.

It is also not what makes you unable to sell the games. The agreements that you click / agree to when installing the game is what makes you unable to sell the games. Of which by the way, is simply stating that what you own is a LICENSE to play the game. This is the same thing that you agree to when you install any other game and any other software program. STeam isnt what keeps you from giving your games away, the agreement is. BTW… how exactly are you going to give away your games if you refuse to use steam as the delivery platform??? Also, steam is what keeps your games patched and up to date. And by the way, for that argument… it IS possible to sell your steam account with your games on it, however if valve ever finds out, the account would be disabled. But then what would you care at that point… you already sold it to the sucker that thought he could get the games at a discount.

And you say you want to install the game and then search for the patches yourself and install them yourself. To be honest, why do all of that manually when that is exactly what steam was designed to do? ok ok ok ok… You want to do it just because. Ok fine. Good luck finding the game, finding the correct patches, the latest and greatest updates, and making them all work on your computer, and playing your game that is not attached to an account and at any time could be highjacked and yet you have no proof to get it back.

ftl imho.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
