I am lucky...

as a noob gamer at the young age of 15 or something, my parents decided to buy a new PC “for business”. so I went online and read reviews of games, trying to decide what to spend my limited funds on (aside from Madden of course)
I finally decided to buy System Shock 2, and later, Half Life. and ever since, nothing else has measured up. Most of the time I get pissed that new games aren’t as good, but I’m finally coming to the realization that I am actually one of the lucky few who got to experience gaming at it’s best at the very beginning, and the continuing failures of the gaming industry can never take that away from me.

I gamed in the times of System Shock 2 and Half-Life…

What the fuck is with people thinking no good games have come out since the 90s.

I do need to get around to playing SS2, though, after hearing how good it is.

Don’t act like the lesser examples of contemporary gaming are somehow overshadowing top-notch PC games from yesteryear.

Or rather, don’t think playing a rusty old PC shooter/puzzle game makes you superior to someone playing Modern Warfare.

The consumption of media, both old and new, isn’t really something to brag about.
Create something that will be enjoyed by current and future generations, then we’ll be impressed.

SShock2 was fun. It sucks the series wasn’t continued since we had sort of a cliffhanging ending.
The mods/skins available are good too.

QFT

1998/99, or 1958?

Because there were games around for decades before Half-Life and System Shock 2.

I’m not saying they weren’t good games, (I’ve never played System Shock 2, sadly, but Half-Life was amazing for it’s time, and is still decent today) but don’t act like video games didn’t exist before the 1990s.

Video games are still great at this time too, 2011 was an amazing year for gaming.

I agree, while some games do a lot of hand holding for the player which I’m not a fan of, a lot of them are still great games. If they didn’t have that hand holding (and artificial difficulty which only changes how accurate/weak you are) They would be more fun then old games.

I say more fun and not better, because some older games are more fun yes, but most of them aren’t better by any stretch of the imagination.

Very beginning? Go play Ultima 1 or some Chris Crawford games. That still isn’t the “very” beginning, but it’s at least at the genesis of home gaming.

The late 90’s were a particularly good time for games though. Thief, System Shock 2, Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, Half-Life…there really hasn’t been a period of that much innovation since, excluding maybe the recent indie revolution. That’s when I got really hardcore into games as well, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t prefer it to the last 4 years or so.

Thief was fucking amazing. The AI is still better then most games.

(heh, Garrett’s voice actor is in Skyrim)

Thief 4 is in production. I cant wait.

Rarely do good games come out in this age.

I can’t name you a masterpiece game of that has come out in the last 4 years.

Half-Life 2 and Resident Evil 4 are the last great games that have come out in my opinion. Bioshock is almost a masterpiece, but the writing is kinda immature so I vote no on it – everything else was fine.

ITT: Hipsters.

As long as they keep the focus on first person gameplay, I’m excited.

They could have third person but it really shouldn’t be the “main” view IMO.

Yeah, well Dishonored is going to blow everyone away when it comes out.

Anyone else get all depressed when they remember those days when you could flip on the PC and play some Half Life or Baldur’s Gate; remember when you could invite a friend over and help each other get past puzzles in Resident Evil 2 while eating some pop-tarts at 8:00 in the morning; remember when you could have giant LAN parties with all of your friends and sport some Zerg in a long night of Starcraft and maybe some Warcraft II or Half Life deathmatch?

Remember when you read game reviews in your monthly subscription to see how much reviewers love the game, instead of reading them to try and save money on what games not to buy?

You know, the 90’s were a great time.

I honestly thought the 2000’s were going to be good -what with games like Morrowind, Resident Evil 4 and Half Life 2 starting it off- but it all went to dust when money became the goal.

You just don’t get that feeling of love for a game these days, at least not as frequently – not nearly.

That’s why Black Mesa is going to be great, it’s like a personal test for me to see if I can love this as much as the original. I’m gonna try really hard, too.

ITT: Modern games are shit, no exceptions.

Depends on the genre.

No

I find it funny how you guys talk about how 90’s games where so great and today’s suck but you only talk about 3-4 of how many games came out in the 90’s?

Get a fucking life and stop sitting on a forum spewing nostalgia while you are young and shouldn’t be wasting all your time sitting around moping about how the “good ol’ days” where.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
