Hide the download links Half-life source’s game files. People would have to analyse the sounds much like in portal ARG. People who doesn’t have half life source or aren’t computer whiz would have to wait until someone spreads the link.
I said this like, 3 or 4 years ago. They need to announce on April 1 that the mod is canceled. Then release it on April 2 with no warning.

Go high up in a zeppelin and drop the CDs from it, watching people scramble in the middle of the street trying to get a copy, trampling each other while doing so and fighting over it. I’m sure quite a few people would shoot one another as well. Plus the added bonus of some people being in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting a CD lodged in their head.
CDs would actually get smashed unless catched with a giant cushion or something. But I like the CD-lodged-in-heads part.
I would go for an April Fools approach…
Mid-march: “Black Mesa Release: Early April”
April 1st: “Black Mesa Released!” Bogus download link added. Loops you to a very realistic 404 error, but eventually sends you to some .ru mail host. Total shutdown of all moderator/dev communication. Forum would explode with hate-mail.
April 8th: Download link goes good, moderators delete nubposts, forum reaches record number of registers in a one month period, goes into some world-records book.
EDIT: Second thought, instead of a bogus download, a download with all the files and whatnot you need, but only the maps up to the resonance cascade. Then they do something that makes the game crash, no matter what. One week later, they release a patch and full version.
