Honestly, that was EXACTLY what I was going to put.

I’d probably post a download link, but don’t tell anyone it’s actually a demo. Have the resonance cascade crash the game just after the text, “2012.”
If I was a developer, I would create a new account, with a name which makes it seem like I was another incarnate of Mad Max, i.e. Mad_Max_Again, Super_Mad_Max, or whatever, I would then proceed to create threads just to troll people. Whoever asked to have me banned would be banned themselves.
After 20 threads, I would make a thread telling people I could get them Black Mesa, all they had to do was PM me who I was. Everyone who said ‘Mad Max’ would get a vulgar reply and everyone else would get a no. One week later, I would make the thread again, this time I would give a download link from somewhere slow to get Black Mesa, to everyone who said ‘A troll’. Everyone else would get a vulgar reply.

Actually that’s how it really works, trouble is that so far nobody’s been able to see through Mad Max’s trolling efforts 
I’ld make it an uncompressed multi rar of an ISO or ISZ which contained the mod in yet another split rar and seed through torrent.

I’d release it as a self conscious virus that downloads and installs itself on every computer on the world locking you out of the operating system and you have to beat the game in order to unlock your files.
for at least a few days the whole world would play black mesa. the alarm clocks would ring with the black mesa theme the microwaves would blow up, hell… even the sun would project a black mesa logo on the earth…
I’d make it so that for every MB you download, the devs would strangle a kitty.

You’re right, it needs to be sustainable. Cap the uploaded speed at 1MB for every kitten born.
I would finish the mod with out saying a thing about the release.
Put on the front page a notice saying its released and have the download link there
I would also release a teaser trailer the same time to help spread word that it is now available.
I like the sneaky release.

I’d just put an announcement up on the main page and release it via Torrent.
I would send out the few able men left in my underground shelter to travel the post-apocalyptic Earth of 26th century, handing out packaged versions of the game to any surviving humans they might find.
Maybe send out a radio signal containing the game in case anyone can still receive it.
