How Half-Life Changed The World

Half-Life almost didnt find a publisher because the game was seen as too ambitious, but a dedicated group of ex-Microsoft employees took the concept of a story driven FPS filled with puzzles and platforming elements and delivered on every front. Half-Life told a mature, subtle narrative about a theoretical physicist’s harrowed escape from a secret underground research facility, but Half-Life’s most notable contribution to the form was its use of scripted sequences and a story telling structure that never took control of the game away from the player, thats how Half-Life changed the world.

Alright that’s great and all. But, did it really need it’s own thread? :frowning:

It seems like today in video games, having scripted sequences is bad. Everything has to be real physics, or controlled by the players own decisions. I guess that shows the evolution of games.

Little Swampfoxie gets a GOLD STAR for EFFORT!

as for actual quality of work done… well, I’m just ganna have to give you one of these: :retard:

Seriously… this is one paragraph that looks like it was cut and pasted out of either combine wiki, regular wikipedia, or the HL2: Raising the Bar book. It also only makes on observation about what problems Valve had to overcome and how Half Life turned out, and doesn’t really even address the subject of Half-Life CHANGING ANYTHING. Most people who are even vaguely interested in this type of thing have already found it and know of this and many more interesting facts on the subject.
Perhaps what it really comes down to is that the Title itself demands too much. Making the assertion of “How half life changed the world” would imply that the author had really taken in in depth analysis, comparing games in the same genre both before and after to evaluate exactly what influences were made, and listing out the names of the people who worked on games as well as names from all the various mods for Half Life and HL2 in order to see who specifically went on to work in game companies after having made mods.
If all this was supposed to do was act as a conversation starter, then you really should have made the effort to recognize just how little you had to tell simply by phrasing the topic as a question; “How has Half-Life changed the world?” and then tried focusing on bringing up points that demonstrate some sort of effect that Half Life has had on the world, or at the very least other games in the industry, rather than merely talking about what Half Life is and how it came to be.

If you mean that it changed the world of gaming, then yes, I will agree with you.

Except very few gamers in recent times know what Half-Life is. Though there are a lot that do.

Yes, a secret order of Half-Life worshippers still exists somewhere in the mountains of the Andes :3

Marathon did everything Half life did for gaming 5 years before Half life came out.

It’s a shame it wasn’t really that well known…

The success of Half life is similar to that of the Twinkie.

It’s a knockoff product that got big before the original took off.

you can think what ever you want but i wrote this my self

nobody said you didnt , he just implied it sounded like cut and paste and the point of his post was that this thread was not important …

As nerdinium pointed out, that was not what I was taking issue with.

I will now make a thread that demonstrates the issue I have with your thread:

Do you now see the point I’m making here?

Not so much.

ya no, thats definatly not true, Half-Life was the hugest game out for 2 years until DEUS EX pushed it out of the way.

and another thing…

if u look at the story of Half-Life and you look at the story of DOOM, youll see that Half-Life and doom are very similar, wait i should start a thread about this

:fffuuu:

:fffuuu:

To contribute something to this pointless thread, I’ll say that many games/movies/whatnot share elements. HL and Doom aren’t that similar.

It was later on, it’s called Halo. :hmph:

Also about you writing the OP yourself, there is no way, I have definitely read that somewhere else before. You are a liar and a fraud.

I also strongly agree with leocb about this whole thread.

Man, you really need a blog…

i think only the OP disagrees …

Sure he does. But he hasn’t the constitution to back it up

Look at his reply to what I said!

“ya no”

I bet the little bastard never eaven heard of marathon.

Really, the game’s only weakness is that the first installment was mac only.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
