GI’s Comments: Half-Life almost didn’t find a publisher because the game was seen as too ambitious, but a dedicated group of ex-Microsoft employees took the concept of a story-driven FPS filled with puzzles and platforming elements and delivered on every front. Half-Life told a mature, subtle narrative about a theoretical physicist’s harrowed escape from a secret underground research facility, but Half-Life’s most notable contribution to the form was its use of scripted sequences and a storytelling structure that never took control of the game away from the player.
LordYanLiang’s Comments: You know, until now it never really struck me as to how utterly brilliant Half-Life was even by today’s standards. Despite using the graphics and canned animations synonymous with its generation which by today’s standards are primitive and laughable, Half-Life is one of those absolutely timeless games. The storyline is so well-played out and so intense that it keeps you gripped and doesn’t let go. The acting is generally subpar, yet the non-silent main character – the illusive G-Man – delivers with brilliant acting backed by an equally brilliant script. The game leaves you questions that you genuinely want answered; if Half-Life were a TV show, it would have won Emmys and/or SAG awards. And, of course, it’s little quirky idiosynchracies have spawned plenty of pop culture in its own right. The scenery is just as brilliant, and it provided puzzles and platforming elements that truly challenged you but kept you interested. It was good enough to sway even those who hated platforming and puzzle-solving – or if you REALLY couldn’t stomach them, they were balanced quite well with the solid FPS gameplay. Half-Life had it all, and I’m sure if I put some thought into it, I could rearrange the list enough to put Half-Life closer to #20 at least. It’s damn good, and a great way to start a smashing franchise.

Oh and have you noticed how cliche Russians are always depicted in movies - very bad and heavy accent, but always, ALWAYS perfect grammar. The articles, tenses, verbs, everything perfect, but awful accent. Give 'em both good or bad, or go can fuk you self.
